Honoring Rev. Dr. Andrew Bartelt - Christ Memorial Lutheran Church
Christ Memorial Lutheran Church May 2016 CLARION Honoring Rev. Dr. Andrew Bartelt Come early summer, Dr. Andy and Lucy Bartelt will transition from St. Louis back “home” to Wisconsin. Dr. Bartelt has been the anchor of our Bible Class program for more than 30 years. The following interview with Dr. Bartelt, edited for length, highlights his years of service at Christ Memorial. What is happening in May? “My final KFUO Bible Class will be May 8. I have been asked to preach the weekend of May 14/15, which will be a celebration of Pentecost and will be a bit of a farewell.” How long has the KFUO Bible Class been an anchor for the CM Bible Class program? “I started teaching Bible Class when we joined CM in the fall of 1983. We started the radio ministry in 1996, so we’ll have been ‘on the air’ for 20 years. From the beginning we kept this as a Bible Class that was on the radio, not a ‘radio Bible Class.’ Anyone with a question or comment could be heard on the air, and our radio audience listened in.” Any special memories from our radio listening audience? “KFUO reports that Sunday morning is their highest number of listeners, but they don’t know who those listeners are. We have a regular listener from Sweden, who sends greetings from time to time. A lot of folks that listen are tuned in for the time they spend driving to or from their own services.” How does Lucy, as a regular “commentator,” keep you honest? “Lucy has her following, and she won’t let me get away with any wisecracks without a clever response. She is always ready to ask the helpful questions when I start getting too academic or off on a tangent.” Any other “personalities” the radio audience has come to know? “I tease Wally Glaenzer. Folks know Ken Meyer’s Perry County roots. I’m always glad to give Keith Poppitz an opportunity to plug Thrivent.” (Continued on page 2) Inside this issue Vacation Bible School ...... 2 Summer Reading Club..... 3 Suessical Auditions ........... 3 NYG Prayer Partners........ 4 New Member Class .......... 4 Library Additions .............. 6 Thrivent Action Teams ..... 7 Mark your calendars 5/8 Last Bartelt KFUO Bible Class 5/8 Women’s Guild Luncheon 5/14-15 Bartelt “Farewell” Sermons 5/15-7/31 Summer Reading Club 5/21 Men’s Club Barbeque 6/12-17 Vacation Bible School 6/18 Men’s Club Barbeque 6/25 SuessicalTM Auditions 7/16-20 National Youth Gathering 7/16 Men’s Club Barbeque 8/20 Men’s Club Barbeque 9/17 Men’s Club Barbeque 9/16-25 Suessical 1 seeking delegates for green park and lutheran south Looking for an opportunity to serve our church and association schools? Email to: [email protected] Next deadline: May 10 Jenny Biggs, Editor »Honoring Bartelt (continued from page 1) Who are the unsung heroes who have made the KFUO Bible Class happen? “There are our radio technicians who have served over the years: Rich Bartz, Leon Knoernschild, Bob Danko, Keith Hampton, and Tony Avena. Rusty Baccus was responsible for implementing the weekly radio sponsor program, which continued under Corrine Schilling and Sandy Fiehler. George Calvin is our most faithful supporter and cheerleader. Jack Schmitt is always there handling every detail including the ‘roving microphone.’ I am grateful to our many faithful attendees. To all: Thank you!” What are your plans come June? “Although stepping down from the KFUO Bible Class, I am not really retiring from the seminary. Lucy and I have had plans to ‘go home’ to Wisconsin for many years. We will move there over the early summer. But I will continue to teach and carry some other responsibilities for the seminary, about halftime. So we’ll be back from time to time and look forward to seeing our many friends at CM.” What encouragements do you have to us to be in the Word? “Christ Memorial has been the home congregation for my family for over 30 years. During that time we have made many dear friends and faithful followers of our Lord. My prayer—and encouragement—is that many more take advantage of the wonderful gifts that God gives us through the many Bible teachers and leaders right within our CM family. It has been a wonderful privilege to be even a small part of that over the years. We all have a part in God’s great story of salvation. May that Word go out to all who do not know or fully appreciate God’s Word Made Flesh, our Savior, who is Christ the Lord!” To Dr. Bartelt and Lucy we say, in the words of Hebrew 13:7-8, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the Word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” »vbs 2016 is “farm-tastic!” In Barnyard Roundup VBS your children learn that Jesus gathers us together! According to the American Library Association, summer reading programs encourage reading as a lifelong habit. Reading over the summer also helps children keep their skills up. Pictured: CM participants in the 5K Run/Walk. It looks like a health and fitness growth movement at Christ Memorial. Participation in the Go! St. Louis Marathon and Family Fitness Weekend April 9 and 10 set a record for Christ Memorial in both involvement and donations. The number of participants have swelled in the past three years from 29 to 43 to nearly 70 in 2016. And annual contributions from CM members, nonmembers, and corporate sponsors have grown to more than $10,000. All proceeds support the ongoing operation of the Christ Memorial Health Center (CMHC) which is offered free to members and the community. Just as important as the money raised was the commitment on the part of the participants. They have trained for weeks for their events which will contribute to a more active lifestyle and healthy bodies. In fact about half of those who laced up their walking and running shoes, including many children, were first-time participants, and some have not been involved in any kind of exercise in the recent past. Pastor Bill Simmons who ran the 5K on Saturday and the halfmarathon on Sunday said that Christ Memorial’s growing participation “constitutes a movement toward health in the congregation. This is a further expression of the tangible nature of our Christian faith, that our faith engages all aspects of life, be it in service, exercise and nutrition, or family life.” Special recognition to our corporate sponsors, Dawson Dodd Heating and Cooling, and Dave Sinclair Buick-GMC, for their generosity in contributing to the Health Center on behalf of the CM runners. Bruce Oehler, left, and Gerry Scheuermann completing their mile walk as onlookers offer encouragement and cheers. 8 Christ Memorial has been proud to provide a free fullyequipped fitness center since 2007. The CMHC provides its services and programs to welcome the community and put into motion our emphasis on CM’s Loved + Sent ministry. In addition to the weight and cardio equipment CM instructors offer classes in weightloss, nutrition, strengthening, and more. There is also a free rehab program for those who qualify. See all that is offered at www.CMHealthCenter.org.
