LCPS Raised Funds for Make a Difference Day
L’Anse Creuse Public Schools participated in the 2013
Make a Difference Day by holding a penny drive for the
Macomb Food Program. Nine buildings participated and
raised $4,175, with Atwood Elementary School raising
the most money. As a reward Atwood Elementary School
presented a check to the Macomb Food Program on
December 2 on behalf of the district.

Make a Difference Day is a national day of community
service, encouraging millions of volunteers to help improve
the lives of others. L’Anse Creuse has participated in the
Make a Difference Day Penny Drive since 1994 and this the
third year in a row Atwood Elementary School has collected
the most money.
Calvin Johnson Jr. Foundation
and L’Anse Creuse High School
L’Anse Creuse High School is proud to be the first school launching
a partnership with the Calvin Johnson Jr. Foundation, Inc (CJJRF).
The partnership will include a football camp, health fair, educational
sessions, grooming and etiquette, and physical fitness.
CJJRF is a non-profit organization
founded in 2008 by Calvin Johnson
Jr, All-Pro NFL wide receiver of the
Detroit Lions. The mission of the
Foundation is to change the mind set
of youth from struggle to survival,
from poor self-esteem to excitement
of life, from dependent thinking to
goal setting self-sufficiency, and from
hopelessness to empowerment. The
Foundation emphasizes that these goals can be achieved though
education, leadership training, football camps, mentorships, student
scholarships, and financial assistance to community organizations.
L’Anse Creuse High School Athletic Director, Orlando Medina,
is thrilled to work with the Foundation. “Anytime you have an
opportunity to impact the lives of students through education, health,
and sports it’s exciting,” said Medina. “The program’s focus on
shaping students into quality citizens makes the program even more
enticing. ‘Catching Dreams,’ that’s what it’s all about.”

Tenniswood Watch D.O.G.S.
On September 26, Tenniswood Elementary School kicked-off their new
program, Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students). This program is intended
to engage men, inspire children, reduce bullying, and enhance the
educational environment within the school. Watch D.O.G.S. will attend
school and spend the day with students. They will assist with dismissal,
arrival, lunch recess and in the classrooms. The Watch D.O.G.S. can be
fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and any other father figures
who volunteers to serve.

The kick-off activity consisted of the Watch D.O.G.S. joining their student
for a pizza dinner and presentation/sign-up for the "Dads." During this, the
students decorated frames that will display a picture taken during the year
of them and their Watch D.O.G.S.

Last Friday, October 11, High School - North’s varsity
football team won, 62 to 13 over Port Huron. The win
fueled a great start to a perfect homecoming weekend
for staff and students.

The open community forum, Shaping
Success, is set for Saturday, January
18 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the
John R. Armstrong Performing Arts
Center. The two hour event will begin
with a motivational and enlightening
presentation from well known Oakland
University professor and public
education advocate, Dr. C. Robert
Maxfield. Following the presentation,
attendees will break into small groups
to evaluate the district’s strengths,
challenges, vision, mission, and beliefs.
The information collected will act as the
foundation for the new L’Anse Creuse
Public Schools Strategic Plan.
We encourage everyone to attend
the open forum. We are inviting staff,
parents, residents, local business
owners, and political leaders because we
all know that a thriving public school
district and a prosperous community go
hand in hand.

L’Anse Creuse Public Schools Placed on the
Annual AP® District Honor Roll for Second Year
L’Anse Creuse Public Schools is one of 477 school districts
nationwide being honored this year by the College Board
with placement on the Annual AP® District Honor Roll.
To receive this designation a district must simultaneously
increase access to Advanced Placement® coursework while
increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3
or higher on AP Exams. According to the College Board,
achieving both of these goals is the ideal scenario for a
district’s AP program because it indicates that the district
is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared
students who are likely to benefit most from rigorous AP
course work.
More than 90% of colleges and universities across the
U.S. offer college credit, advanced placement or both for a
score of 3 or above on an AP Exam — which can potentially save students and their families thousands of
dollars in college tuition.
“We are very proud L’Anse Creuse Public Schools has been placed on the Annual AP District Honor
Roll two years in a row,” said Superintendent Jackie Johnston. “This national recognition exemplifies our
continued focus on rigor and academic achievement. Congratulations to the students, staff, and parents!”
Middle School – East
Honors Veterans
L’Anse Creuse Middle School – East held their
Annual Veteran’s Day Assembly on November
11. The school invited veterans from all over the
community for breakfast and to be honored by
students. Over 40 veterans attended including,
Selfridge Air National Honor Guards, Purple Heart
Recipients, and P.O.W.’s.
Honored guests included Lieutenant Colonel
Lawrence Milben of the Tuskegee Airmen, and
Lieutenant Colonel Mac Crawford and Lieutenant
Colonel Chad Rauls of the United Sates Air Force.
The assembly featured the Presentation of Colors
by the Selfridge Honor Guard, a Flag Folding
Ceremony, a Coining Ceremony, and patriotic
performances by the L’Anse Creuse Middle School –
East band, current student leaders, and alumni.
“It is very important the veterans are recognized
for allowing us the privileges and freedoms that we
have today. We are very proud to honor these living
legends among us,” said Science Teacher, Dr. Heidi
M. von Oetinger-Reed.
Suicide Prevention at
Middle School - Central
Dennis Legghio, founder of Know Resolve, spoke to
a gymnasium filled with L’Anse Creuse Middle School
– Central students about youth suicide prevention.
Legghio opened up to students about his personal
experiences with suicide and depression. His goal
is to give students a new perspective and provide
them with the resources needed to cope with stress,
depression, and emotional overload.
Fox 2 News Detroit (WJBK) filmed the presentation
and interviewed several students for a story featuring
Legghio and Know Resolve that is set to air during
the holiday season. The story was filmed at L’Anse
Creuse Middle School – Central due to its historical
significance, it was the first school Legghio presented
to in 2007.

Pankow Center Received Awards and Scholarships
Frederick V. Pankow Center Thespian Troupe 7494 received multiple
honors at the recent Michigan Thespian Festival. The troop earned nine
“Superior” ratings, four “Excellent” ratings, and approximately $122,000 in
scholarship offers.
The festival is Michigan’s largest annual theatre event and provides
students from across the state the opportunity to share their love of
performing arts. Students are able to see multiple shows, participate
in different workshops, compete in a variety of events, and audition for
scholarships.

Frederick V. Pankow Center. The programs are staffed by
certified teachers and supported by certified counselors an
externship coordinator (formerly Co-Op).

High School, Merritt Academy, Richmond High School and
Riverside Academy – MC/LC
A complete program of study in a CTE area usually involves a
sequence of courses. Advanced courses will have the preceding
course as a prerequisite. Externship (Co-Op) are available for most
programs. Lack of English Skills will not be a barrier.

– North Quarterback Awarded
Numerous Titles
L’Anse Creuse High
School – North quarterback,
Sean Koski, had a
phenomenal season. This
was a record setting year for
Koski. He is third all-time in
the state for passing yards
in a season, 3,818 yards,
and fourth in the state for
touchdowns in a season with
41 touchdowns. With his
leadership the Crusaders
won eight of ten games and
went to the Division 1 firstround playoffs. Koski was
also named “Macomb County
Player of the Year” (Macomb
Daily), “Metro Detroit
Offensive Player of the Year”
(MLive), and was a top four
finalist for the “Michigan
High School Football Player
of the Year” (MLive).
“Sean did a great job
in leading the team and had a record setting season,” said Crusaders
Football Coach, Anthony Kiner. “The best thing about Sean is how much
of a team player he is and how much he cares for his teammates. He
wanted every thing to be about the team not himself. He is a great person
and was a pleasure to coach.”
Currently, Koski is on the Associated Press Division 1-2 All-State team.
He has received offers from several colleges; he has not yet committed to
a school.
Math/Science/
Technology
(MST) Student
is Finalist in
Competition
Shane Roberts, a junior in the
Frederick V. Pankow MST program,
was a finalist in Part I of the Michigan
Mathematics Prize Competition.
Approximately 10,000 students
participated in Part I, and only
1,000 of those were named finalists.
The competition is a challenging
mathematics test composed of 40
multiple choice questions. Roberts had
100 minutes to take the test, without
the aid of a calculator. On Dec. 11, he
took Part II of the test; results will be
posted in January.
Marching Lancers Competes at Ford Field
The L’Anse Creuse High School Marching
Lancers placed fifth in the 2013 Michigan
Competing Band Association (MCBA) Flight I
Championships at Ford Field in Detroit. The
Lancers received a total score of 86.5 out of 100
and competed against 12 other teams in their
flight. Flights are determined by the number of
students enrolled in the school; Flight 1 is made
up of the largest schools.
Established in 1974, the MCBA hosts several
local competitions and holds the only statewide
marching band championships in Michigan.
In order to qualify for the Championships, the
Lancers had to compete in a minimum of two
MCBA contests and achieve scores that place
them in the top twelve scoring bands in their
flight. They were judged on general effect music,
general effect visual, music field, visual field,
music ensemble, and visual ensemble.

Bond Update
December 2013
2013 bond projects are now complete at the
L’Anse Creuse High School, L’Anse Creuse High
School – North, Frederick V. Pankow Center, L’Anse
Creuse Middle School – East, L’Anse Creuse Middle
School – North, Emma V. Lobbestael Elementary
School, Tenniswood Elementary School, and Donald
J. Yacks Elementary School. Students and staff
members are enjoying updated facilities that provide
for a comfortable learning environment and enhance
instruction.
Planning is underway for proposed summer 2014
projects. Wakely Associates, Inc. is busy with the
designs including electrical upgrades, clock and
PA system replacements, site improvements, new
roofing, and building security. Projects will go out
for bids this winter. The final step involves Board
of Education approval and work authorization. We
plan on another busy construction summer.

Action Coalition
Our mission is to “Sustain a Safe and Healthy Community”
Call to Conversation
On the evening of November 12, L’Anse Creuse
Community Action Coalition held their first Call to
Conversation. At the event a panel of distinguished
community speakers discussed the impact of
“today’s” marijuana on youth with parents and
