GREETINGS
As we celebrate the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art’s 100th birthday, a major milestone for any cultural institution around
the world, I would like to thank all of you for supporting the museum and its educational programs. During our centennial
year, celebrated between late April 2016 through May 2017, we will continue to make exciting changes to launch our
second century of service to the Memphis community and beyond. We hope you will join us on this exciting journey,
whether it is taking in events from the popular Memphis Wine and Food Series you are participating in tonight, or the
more than eleven art installations we will feature this year. We are your museum and we want to make sure you always
feel welcome here.
Thank you for being here tonight and please join me in celebrating our featured winemakers: Chappellet, Justin,
Schramsberg, and Rock Wall Wines. It did not take long for me to learn just how important the Memphis Wine and Food
Series is in the life of Memphis, not just for the financial support you provide its art museum, although that is significant,
but for the ways in which you support the art of food and wine in our community. Thank you for showcasing the best in
fine wines and culinary delights in Memphis, truly a paradise for foodies and oenophiles!
The 2016 Memphis Wine + Food Series at the Brooks is led by our incredible chairs Wendi and Marc Mihalko and Suzanne
and Jon Scharff. It is such a pleasure to work with these generous and hardworking couples on the planning for the Brooks
Museum’s largest annual fundraisers. Our entire MW+FS Committee is deeply committed to the betterment of our city,
our community, and our museum. We cannot thank you enough for your time and support.
Their efforts are matched only by the museum’s staff, who works tirelessly to ensure the museum’s success. I would like to
thank specifically Kim Williams, Lindsey Hedgepeth, and the museum’s Development Department, and the entire catering
staff of Karen Blockman Carrier and Another Roadside Attraction. The creativity, passion, and professional management
of Team Brooks distinguishes our events. Please join me in thanking all of our 2016 volunteers and staff.
We have so much to be proud of at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, as the largest and oldest art museum in Tennessee,
and the only major collection of world art in Tennessee and the region. As we launch Inside Art, Tennessee’s first hands-on
family gallery devoted to visual literacy; eMuseum, which places the over 9,000 artworks from the collection online and
accessible to all, and continue and build upon our distinctive educational programs, which transform young lives through
the power of art every day, please know your support is what makes it all possible.
The dollars raised tonight will directly impact young lives, and enable access to the arts for children and adults across
the Mid-South region. Please accept my heartfelt thanks as we all raise our glasses to 100 years of the Memphis Brooks
Museum of Art and 24 years of the often-imitated but never replicated Memphis Wine + Food Series!
*All successful bidders must take possession of their purchases at the conclusion of the
auction. Please see the cashier located in the foyer of the 1916 entrance of the museum.
Neither the Brooks nor its staff can bear responsibility for items left behind by the buyer.

Finally, a very special thanks to the First Tennessee Foundation, our presenting sponsor, and to all of our sponsors and
partners who share our vision of transforming lives through the power of art. The Memphis Wine + Food Series’ many
donors and sponsors make this event possible and are here tonight to support you because you believe in the Brooks
Museum.
Cheers!

FROM THE CO-CHAIRS
As we all celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Brooks Museum, we, as the co-chairs of the Memphis Wine
+ Food Series, want to thank you for participating in these events, which support the Brooks Museum and
its mission.
The Memphis Wine + Food Series is the largest fundraiser for the Brooks Museum and it includes many
opportunities for the wine and food lover. It kicked off this year with the lively Brooks Uncorked event,
which drew a record crowd.
The Grand Artisans’ Dinner was held last night at the James Lee House, which was the initial home of the
Memphis College of Arts. A lovely evening was enjoyed by a sellout crowd of 60 lucky attendees. Wines
were poured from this year’s featured vintners: Justin, Chappellet, Rock Wall Wines and Schramsberg. An
incredible meal was prepared by local acclaimed chefs Michael Hudman and Andy Ticer. They shared the
kitchen with fellow chefs Chad Harrison, Kayla Palmer and Ryan Jenniges and from Nashville Sal Avila,
Levon Wallace and newly minted James Beard winner Tandy Wilson. Also, this year marks the first time
that we featured a local Memphis artist, Matthew Hasty, as part of the series. His works are on display
all month at the James Lee House. Matthew has generously agreed to donate a significant portion of the
sales from his paintings to the Brooks Museum.
Tonight, we are all enjoying an evening at the Grand Auction with an opportunity to purchase premium
wines and a variety of experiences, which directly impact the Brooks’ operations. It promises to be a night
to remember, as the wines this year are the best collection that we have ever seen.
We look forward to our final event in the fall, Vin-a-Que, where we hope to see you again. Vin-A-Que will
highlight local BBQ offerings from various venues, both on and off the beaten path.
We are very honored to serve as co-chairs for the 2016 Memphis Wine + Food Series. We wholeheartedly
believe in the Brooks Museum and all that it does for our community. Besides hosting a world-class art
collection, the Brooks is recognized nationally for its innovative educational programs and community
outreach. The museum partners with schools, social agencies, and under-served areas to enable children
to enjoy the museum’s exhibitions with their families, but more importantly, to interact with art in a way
that benefits their lives.
Thanks to Memphis Wine + Food Series Manager, Lindsey Hedgepeth, for her tireless hours spent making
these events successful for the ultimate benefit of our city’s children.
Many, many thanks to our sponsors, vintners, chefs, support staff, donors and especially you for making
the Memphis Wine + Food Series a success.

THE SERIES
ABOUT
The Memphis Wine + Food Series is the premier fundraising event for the
Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Held each year, these prestigious events
were created in the late 1980s as a biannual event, and have grown into the
most prominent annual wine auction in the Mid-South region.
Since the early 1990s, the series has contributed over $4 million in net revenue
to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Unique to the Memphis Wine + Food
Series is the expense to revenue ratio: we are proud to direct proceeds raised
from these events back into our award-winning educational programming
for our Memphis community.
The Brooks is enormously grateful to the many donors, buyers, and
participants who worked so hard over the years to make these events a
success. Countless people have given their time, talent and resources for the
benefit of the Wine + Food Series and, ultimately, the museum.
THE MUSEUM
Dedicated to the vision of transforming lives through the power of art, the Memphis Brooks
Museum of Art is one of the most innovative and community focused art museums in the nation.
With an encyclopedic art collection spanning millennia of time, the Brooks Museum serves
as a cultural cornerstone of our city, state, and region. Through the strength of unsurpassed
professional practice, new scholarship, special exhibitions, and a permanent collection built over
99 years of community investment, the board and staff of the Brooks are devoted to making our
city a better place to work, live, and play. In recent years, the Brooks has grown to particular note
in its deeply embedded education programs, which have included a new early childhood initiative
and art therapy programs Museums around the country are following the Brooks’ lead.
Founded in 1916, the Brooks Museum is a vibrant cultural complex composed of numerous galleries,
two art classrooms, a print study room, a private research library and a professional auditorium
with state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment. In addition, the Brooks will soon offer a café/shop,
and includes both public and private meeting spaces. Each year in our galleries we present more
than a dozen special exhibitions and an ever-changing selection from our permanent collection.
The art we present is brought to life by public programs for children and adults throughout the
year, including numerous film screenings, visiting lecturers, dance performances and free family
events.
The Brooks is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution that depends on the generosity of Memphians
to support the museum’s impact through charitable giving, grants, sponsorships, and earned
revenues. The Brooks’ membership program is highly active and raises over a half million dollars
each year in support. The Brooks is open five days a week and is always free on Wednesdays as
well as for numerous special community days and festivals each year.

SHAUNA ROSENBLUM
WINEMAKERS
Winemaker, Rock Wall Wines
Shauna Rosenblum is Winemaker for Rock Wall Wine Company. She learned
everything she knows about winemaking from her father Kent Rosenblum,
who is CEO. Kent and Shauna Rosenblum are a father-and-daughter team
committed to limited production winemaking geared to their tastes and
sense of fun and adventure.
Kent brings over 35 years of wine-making experience, and daughter Shauna
literally grew up in the cellar. After building Rosenblum Winery from a 400to a 250,000-case producer, Founder/Winemaker Kent Rosenblum sold
the winery in 2008, and then started up Rock Wall Wine with Shauna, as
winemaker. “We wanted to go back to a family business that focused on
great wines and having a good time,” says Kent.
Shauna spent her childhood in wineries and vineyards where she has worked and learned all the facets
of the wine-making business. Shauna has a master’s degree in sculpture from the San Francisco Art
Institute. As an undergraduate, she became very interested in chemistry through the ceramics glaze
making process. She realized the crossover in the ceramics and winemaking processes as far as
chemistry and it became very clear that her father had been grooming her to be a part of the family
business her whole life.
From winegrowing regions to winemaking techniques, for Kent, making wine has always been about
a willingness to explore viticultural regions and experiment with winemaking techniques, which is the
legacy he has passed on to his daughter. Today, Shauna heads up the cellar at the 25,000-case family
venture, with Kent as CEO. A family affair Rock Wall is about having fun, while making the best wines
from the best regions and sharing the experience with others.

CARISSA CHAPPELLET
Artist, Author, Photographer, Vintner, Jill-of-Many-Trades, Chappellet Winery
Carissa works as an attorney and ambassador at large for her family’s
company, Chappellet Winery. For years she wanted to combine her artistic
talents with her work life, and in 2010 she wrote, The Dragons of Pritchard
Hill, a fantasy about the dragons living on the property where her family
farms their grapes. Her colorful dragons delighted her family, (who are also
the company board members), and the decision was made to allow Carissa
to create a new dragon each year to be featured on the Chappellet Malbec.
In addition to acrylic painting, Carissa is an avid photographer and often
combines digital media and reproduces her work as aluminum metal prints.
Her love for dragons is surpassed only by her love for her Vizsla, Tuk.
Carissa is a published author, her current works include: The Romance of California Vineyards, The
Dragons of Pritchard Hill, and Poetic Moon.
RACHEL WESLEY
Representing Schramsberg
Rachel Wesley has passion for food and wine. Her passion has focused on the wine business for 32 years
working for importers and Napa Valley wineries throughout her career. She is currently representing
the historic Schramsberg Winery/Davies Vineyards and Wilson Daniels in the Midwest. In addition,
she owed JD Wesley’s Bistro, a fine French bistro for 10 years coupled with the wine business. In 2004
she graduated with an MBA from the Bordeaux Ecole du Management in Bordeaux, France. Based in
Chicago and Ohio, Rachel travels the Midwest spreading the love of great wine.

ANDY TICER &
MICHAEL HUDMAN
CHEFS
Born and bred Memphians, Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman opened
Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen in 2008 to feature innovative Italian
cooking rooted in Southern tradition. The chefs trained at Johnson
and Wales University in Charleston, South Carolina and the Italian
Culinary Institute in Calabria, Italy.
Their restaurant, Hog & Hominy, is a wood burning, neighborhood
eatery and was named one of the top new restaurants by GQ
Magazine, Southern Living, and Bon Appetit as well as a semi-finalist
for Best New Restaurant from the James Beard Foundation, which
also named the chefs semi-finalists for the Best Chef: Southeast
award for three consecutive years in 2012, 2013, and 2014. In 2013, they were awarded Food & Wine
Magazine’s Best New Chefs Award and named in Starchefs.com’s 2014 Kentucky-Tennessee Rising Star
Chefs. In his review of the restaurants in 2013, Pete Wells of the New York Times called the restaurants
“a sibling rivalry worth diving into.”
Early 2015 saw the opening of the chefs’ third space, a craft butcher shop and café, complete with classic
pastries, coffee, espresso and cicchetti served in the dim sum style. Porcellino’s Craft Butcher received
four stars from The Commercial Appeal and made the Bon Appetit list of Top 50 new restaurants for
2015. The chefs have announced two new restaurants to debut in 2016: Catherine & Mary’s in Downtown
Memphis and Josephine Estelle in New Orleans in partnership with the Ace Hotel.
CHAD HARRISON
Chef Chad Harrison began his kitchen career washing dishes, working
his way to the line before attending James Madison University, where he
received his Bachelor’s of Arts in Philosophy. After college, Harrison enrolled
in culinary school at Johnson and Wales before moving to Oxford, MS where
he trained under James Beard nominated Chef Vhishwesh Bhatt at Snackbar,
one of James Beard Award winning chef John Currence’s highly successful
restaurants. Harrison moved to Memphis to work at Andrew Michael Italian
Kitchen, where over the past three years, moved from garde manger to sous
chef.
11
KAYLA PALMER
Originally from California, Kayla Palmer studied at the Culinary Institute of
America. She then worked under John Currence at City Grocery in Oxford
where she met Michael and Andy. Upon graduation, she moved to Memphis
and began work at Hog & Hominy. Following her passion for baking, Palmer
began making desserts at both restaurants, eventually moving full time to
Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen. After receiving the position of pastry chef
for the restaurant group and running the pastry kitchen at Porcellino’s Craft
Butcher, Kayla continued her education staging under Andrew Ullom at Joule
in Raleigh, North Carolina.
RYAN JENNIGES
Before leading the kitchen of Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, Ryan Jenniges
spent his childhood in a relatively small city in Iowa, where his views growing
up were mostly corn fields and farmland. He often helped his parents in the
garden that was always full of various produce and herbs. During many of
his summers, he and his family would travel to his grandparents’ farms in
Minnesota and spend days canning vegetables and fruits and occasionally,
butchering chickens for the various families to take home.
Upon graduation from high school, he studied industrial technology at Iowa
State University while supporting himself with various kitchen and catering
jobs throughout his undergraduate career. This is ultimately where he found a love for food and for
cooking for others.
After receiving his Bachelor’s of Science, he found his way to Houston, TX, and began culinary school
at the Culinary Institute LeNôtre. After culinary school, he earned a position at The Tasting Room in
Houston, training under chef David Coffman, whom he followed to *17, a fine dining American restaurant
in the historic Sam Houston Hotel.
After moving to Memphis, he soon gained a position on the line at Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen.
Under the guidance of chefs Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman, he learned much about what authentic
Italian food is, what Southern food is and what their vision was for Italian food with Southern influences.
Not long after, he assumed the position of sous chef, and after countless hours and many nights with
little sleep, he established his kitchen systems needed to run Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, leading to his
promotion to Chef de Cuisine.

SALVADOR AVILA
Salvador Avila is an accomplished chef with 14 years of experience in all
aspects of restaurant kitchen operations from line cook to Executive Chef.
Sal has deep roots in Middle Tennessee. Before moving to Nashville he grew
up in nearby Columbia, TN. Prior to beginning work on the concept for
Prima, Sal was the Executive Chef at 360 Bistro, receiving rave reviews from
the restaurant’s patrons and many in the local media. Sal has also worked in
various roles for local favorites City House, Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint, Burger
Up and Josephine.
Sal received his formal training at the California Culinary Academy in San
Francisco, graduating with honors. He then went to work in many of the Bay Area’s finest restaurants
to hone his skills in all aspects of menu planning, food preparation, staff management, and restaurant
operations. In preparation for his dream to launch his own dining concept, Sal worked in many different
areas including meats, pastry, breads, fruits and salads, pantry, pizza oven, and sauté, and served as
butcher and sous chef. His West Coast experience includes many of America’s finest restaurants such as
The Hotel Monaco and Grand Café in San Francisco and The Ritz-Carlton at Half Moon Bay. In addition
to his restaurant experience, Sal has also worked in catering and has served as a Private Chef in Northern
California and Middle Tennessee.
LEVON WALLACE
A California native and graduate of the California Culinary Academy in San
Francisco, Wallace apprenticed at some of the city’s finest restaurants before
becoming Chef de Cuisine at the Ojai Valley Inn receiving the coveted AAA
Five Diamond Award. In 2008, opportunity lead him to Martha’s Vineyard
,where he worked as Executive Chef for two boutique hotels on the New
England Coast before becoming Corporate Executive Chef for Scout Hotels,
overseeing five properties with six restaurants.
TANDY WILSON
It started with cornbread. No written recipe. Just an oral blueprint passed
down from his mother and her mother before that. It was these women in his
life who would cultivate Tandy Wilson’s appreciation for food early on and
ignite his cooking philosophy of “heart and soul.” It wasn’t until his first job at
The Orangery while attending the University of Knoxville that Tandy realized
his love of cooking could turn into a career. Quickly transitioning from behind
the dish pit to behind the line, Tandy was given a culinary school textbook by
Chef Kevin Fults. He was instructed to work his way through it – a step in the
right direction.
After graduating with a degree in Hotel & Restaurant Administration in 2000, Tandy moved to Arizona
where he attended Scottsdale Culinary Institute. A year later he was placed at the highly acclaimed Tra
Vigne restaurant in Saint Helena where he first met good friend and mentor, Nate Appleman. Nate’s
enthusiasm for Italian cuisine sparked excitement and eventually led Tandy on a two-month journey
through Italy. With both Italian restaurant training and travel in his repertoire, Tandy came home to his
roots in 2004. It was in Nashville while working as sous chef for Margot McCormack at Margot Café
where he sharpened his skills and developed his own dream to open a restaurant.
City House opened in December of 2007 in Nashville’s historic Germantown in a nineteenth-century
brick building that once housed the working space for artist and sculptor, Alan LeQuire. It is here where
Tandy showcases his love of fresh, local ingredients on an almost nightly basis while bridging the gap
between authentic Italian cuisine and down-home Southern cooking.
Tandy’s dedication to quality along with some Southern-Italian flare has gotten the attention of the
James Beard Foundation – which nominated him as a semi-finalist for Best Chef Southeast in 2013, 2014,
2015 and named as the winner in this category just this year in 2016! His name regularly appears in Bon
Appetit and he was named “Best New Chef in the Southeast” by Food & Wine magazine. But at the heart
of it all, Tandy Wilson is a true Southern boy with a passion for good food and its humbling ability to
bring folks together. And that’s exactly what one will find when walking through the doors of Tandy’s
City House – food and family.
In 2012, Wallace joined Proof on Main in Louisville‘s 21c Museum Hotel as
Executive Chef. He made a very successful integration into the Southern
food scene during his tenure there, earning him a number of accolades,
including the title of 2014 Rising Star Chef from StarChefs.com. He is an active member of the James
Beard Foundation and participated in the inaugural Chefs Boot Camp for Policy & Change.
In summer 2015 Wallace headed to Nashville to open Cochon Butcher Nashville as its Executive Chef.

Growing up in rural Oklahoma,
surrounded by flat, wide-open
spaces, Veda Reed has found
endless inspiration in the sky. This
ranges from the life cycles of the
rising and the setting sun to the
phases of the moon, and includes
the majesty of clouds. Each
painting represents a moment
seen, absorbed and recorded,
then translated into a small study,
and later into a large composition.
Reed considers some of her
paintings to be direct celebrations
of nature’s beauty, while others,
the night sky paintings in
particular, are markers signifying
people in her past, or special
moments of passage in her life.
All of the paintings reflect her
continuing investigation of the
spiritual dimension in art; her
lifetime search for truth and
beauty, a spiritual journey still in
progress.
Our company established a private charitable foundation in 1993 to support nonprofit organizations
in the communities we serve. We invest in a way that engages our employees, responds inclusively
to needs and promotes progress and prosperity across Tennessee.
Since its inception, our foundation has donated more than $55 million to meet community needs. The
foundation was twice chosen as one of the most outstanding foundations by the Memphis chapter
of the National Society of Fundraising Executives for our leadership in philanthropy and community
involvement and a certificate of recognition for our outstanding work in the community from the
American Bankers Association. The committee was impressed with the foundation’s initiative,
creativity and dedication, especially in today’s challenging economic environment.
Art lifts our spirits and expands our horizons. Because art plays a vital role in a healthy community,
expressing the diversity within our common humanity, the First Tennessee Foundation is a longtime supporter. One of our signature investments is ArtsFirst, a program to promote excellence
and enrichment in the arts in Memphis. This new approach allows us to leverage the grant-making
expertise of ArtsMemphis while ensuring we continue to make a significant impact in the community.
Last year the foundation celebrated First Tennessee’s 150th anniversary by giving away $5,000 every
day to a different nonprofit, for 150 days.

SILENT AUCTION
PROCEDURES
1. Each item in the silent auction has a corresponding bid sheet, usually found on the auction table in
front of each respective item. Persons desiring to bid may do so by writing his or her name, bid number,
and the amount bid on the bid sheet.
2. Use only the bid number assigned to you. Couples may choose to be assigned one bid number, or
one for each person. If you choose to have two bid numbers, please make your request at the check-in
tables found at the entrance to the museum.
3. The opening bid on each item must equal or exceed the “minimum bid” stated at the top of each bid
sheet. Each new bid must be written on the next blank line available on the bid sheet. Each increase
in bid must equal or exceed the “minimum raise” stated on the sheet in order to constitute a valid bid.
Silent auction bids will be disqualified if minimum bid and/or minimum raise are not sufficient.
4. An auction official may disqualify your bid on behalf of the Museum if you are blocking any silent
auction table 5 minutes prior to close of that table.
5. Only an auction official may nullify a bid. Authorized persons will be chosen by a Brooks staff member.
3 Weeks. 3 Minutes. Sold!
6. Under no circumstances may an auction bid form be removed or altered unless by an authorized
worker.
7. The silent auction tables will be open for bidding during the tasting portion of the Grand Auction
evening from 5:00-5:50 pm. Closing times will be posted and announced during the evening. (Note:
closing times may be after the commencement of the live auction, as determined by Brooks staff). The
closing bid circled by the auction official constitutes the winning bid. Winning bidders who placed their
bids at the beginning of the evening and are not in attendance at the close of the silent auction will be
notified the first business day after the auction. It will be their responsibility to return with full payment
to pick up their purchase.
21
22
8. In the event of a dispute, an auction official shall act as the final authority and shall determine the
winning bidder. In the event that two bidders are in the process of bidding on the same item when the
official attempts to circle the winning bid, the official may conduct a mini live auction between those
two bidders. He or she will determine the winning bidder. His or her decision is final.
9. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used within one year after the date
of the auction.
10. Any bidder not making arrangements for payment in full at the auction’s check-out area by close
of business the night of the auction may forfeit his right to purchase the item at the discretion of The
Memphis Wine + Food Series committee and Memphis Brooks Museum of Art auction staff.
11. All sales are final and no exchange or refund will be honored unless specifically indicated in the
auction catalogue. Purchased items are not transferable nor are they allowed to be re-sold.
12. We accept cash, Visa, Master Card, American Express, Discover, and personal or corporate checks
as payment for auction items.
LIVE AUCTION
PROCEDURES
Each lot will be offered in catalogue sequence. Any variation from the catalogue description will be
announced by the auctioneer at the time the lot is offered. Please listen carefully as the auctioneer
announces each lot number. Bidding will commence at the auctioneer’s discretion. Each lot will be sold
to the highest bidder. Bidding will advance in increments determined by the auctioneer. All sales are
final. Indication of a bid should be made by a positive display of your numbered bid paddle and may be
made directly to the auctioneer or any of the auction spotters nearby.
23
1. The auction will begin promptly at 6 pm, Saturday, May 21 and continue without interruption until
all items have been auctioned. Doors will open at 5:00 pm, for preview in order to give bidders an
opportunity to view the various items prior to bidding.
2. In order to enter a bid, a bidder must raise his or her bid paddle high and attract the attention of the
auctioneer or of one or more of the auction spotters. This must be repeated each time you initiate or
increase a bid. Each bid legally obligates the bidder to pay his bid price in full if his or her bid is deemed
the high bid at the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer. The auction will be fast paced so the bids must be
made quickly!
3. Payment by the successful bidder may be made at the end of the auction. Please wait until you are
finished bidding on all desired items before making payment. Payment may be made with cash, check,
Visa, Master Card, Discover or American Express. Checks should be made payable to Memphis Brooks
Museum of Art. Payment in full is mandatory immediately following the auction. Bidders are encouraged
to use express checkout (available at auction registration). If express checkout is the preferred method
of payment, a credit card will be swiped for $0.00. At the conclusion of the auction, the respective
credit card will be charged for all items purchased by the bidder. There is no need to pay again at
checkout, and the bidder may simply pick up his or her purchases at the designated “pick up” location.
All purchases will include a receipt with tax identification for your records.
4. All sales are final. There will be no exchanges or refunds for items by the donors or this institution
except where specified, unless donor is unable to fulfill obligation as described. Please do not ask the
donors for exchanges or refunds! Purchased items are not transferrable, nor can they be resold.
5. Memphis Brooks Museum of Art has endeavored to catalog and describe the items and services
correctly; however, all lots are sold “as is.” Certain auction items and/or services may have restrictive use
or other qualifications which may affect value, application, or use thereof to bidder. Many items such
as the vacation packages are non-transferable (see Trip Guidelines for complete details). Purchasers are
bound by the precise restrictions specified by the donors. The terms are non-negotiable. Please read
each lot carefully for specifications and limitations.
24
6. Memphis Brooks Museum of Art makes no express or implied warranties of any kind or nature
with respect to the property or services, and in no event shall it be responsible for the correctness of
description, nor deemed to have made any representation or warranty of description, genuineness,
authenticity, or condition of the property or services and no statement made in the catalogue or in the
bill of sale or elsewhere shall be deemed such a warranty or representation or an assumption of liability.
By his or her purchase, the buyer waives any claims for liability against either Memphis Brooks Museum
of Art or the donor of the property or services, and neither Memphis Brooks Museum of Art nor the
donor is responsible for any personal injuries or damages to property that may result from the utilization
of property or services sold.
11. The winning bidder will be acknowledged by the auctioneer. If the auctioneer determines that
an opening bid or any subsequent bid is not commensurate with the value of the item(s) offered, he
may reject the same and withdraw the item(s) from sale, and if having acknowledged an opening bid,
he decides that an advance thereafter is not of sufficient amount, he may reject the advance. The
auctioneer retains the right to add or delete any item. The auctioneer reserves the right to announce
conditions of sale at any time. In the event of any dispute, the auctioneer will have sole and final
discretion in these matters.
12. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, title to the item and/or service will pass to the highest bidder
who, thereupon, assumes full risk and responsibility therefore.
13. Use only the paddle number assigned to you for bidding purposes. Your number is your identification.
7. Items may be picked up at the claim area by exhibiting a paid receipt or, if bidder has utilized express
checkout, by showing proof of identification. When an item has not been displayed, the purchaser will
receive a certificate for the promised gift. Items may be removed from the premises only by exhibiting
a paid receipt at the door at the time of departure.
8. The valuations placed on the items have been determined by volunteers who have researched the
sale of comparable items both at retail and charity sales. The value is not necessarily based on the
highest or lowest comparable and is based on factors that include the place, time and circumstances
of the comparable sale and the condition of the item sold. No representation is made as to the absolute
accuracy of the listed valuation, but every effort has been made to make the best determination
reasonably possible.
9. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used within one year from the
date of the auction; and unless otherwise specified, dates and times are to be arranged at the mutual
convenience of the donor and buyer. To avoid disappointment please make all vacation reservations
well in advance. Security and cleaning deposits, when required by the donor, must be paid directly to
the donor and are not included in your bid.
10. All auction items must be removed from these premises no later than June 1st at the purchaser’s own
risk. Memphis Brooks Museum of Art cannot assume responsibility for items left after that time. Special
arrangement for pick-up or delivery of large items must be made at the time of payment.
25
DUTCH AUCTION
Some of the lots in the Live Auction will be sold as Dutch Auction lots. Dutch
lots refer to those consisting of identical items sold multiple times to different
bidders. Unlike the individual bidding of a regular auction lot, a Dutch Auction
works by process of elimination. The auctioneer will suggest an opening bid.
Anyone willing to pay the opening bid price is asked to stand. (Everyone present
may stand). As the price for the lot rises, anyone willing to pay the new bid
remains standing; others are asked to take their seats. This continues until the
number of people standing matches the number of items available in the lot.
Each bidder standing when the hammer falls receives one item, paying the last
(highest) bid named. Please listen carefully to the auctioneer’s description of
the “seat” for Dutch Auction items – some “seats” are for one person, and some
“seats” are for a couple.
26
VALUATIONS
Upon check-out this evening you will receive a printed receipt for your tax purposes, listing the values
of all auction lots purchased. The valuations placed on the items have been determined by volunteers
who have researched the sale of comparable items both at retail and charity sales. The value is not
necessarily based on the highest or lowest comparable and is based on factors that include the place,
time and circumstances of the comparable sale and the condition of the item sold. No representation
is made as to the absolute accuracy of the listed valuation, but every effort has been made to make the
best determination reasonably possible.

3. MY FAVORITE YEAR: ‘97
When the co-chairs of the series last year were asked about putting together some of their
favorite wines, it occurred to them that putting their favorite California wines from a single
year would make for an unbelievable comparison. Last year they built a case of 1996 and this
year they chose 1997. The winner of this lot can truly answer the question of “who did it best.”

7. HALF CASE 2005 ROBERT MONDAVI
CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVE
Mondavi is often characterized as the epitome of Napa Cabernet. This particular vintage’s
deep, dark inky color signals the wine’s intensity. Aromas of wild blueberry contain hints of
black olive and spicy vanilla from oak aging. Powerful tannins are chewy and generous, and
beautifully balanced by the wine’s equally dense flavors of black fruits—blackberry, black
cherry, boysenberry and crème de cassis. Vibrant and alive with fresh acidity, this collector’s
wooden box is a wonderful prize!

8. PINOT ENVY TASTING
We’ve all searched online, joined the waiting lists and salivated over magazine articles about
the most sought-after “cult” Pinot Noirs in the U.S. Here’s a special opportunity to taste 20 plus
vintages from some of the rarest and hardest to find pinots from Willamette Valley, Sonoma
Coast, Russian River Valley and Santa Barbara. Wines will be poured alongside a delicious
meal artfully prepared by Another Roadside Attraction for 12 lucky high bidders, to be held at
the museum at 6 pm on Thursday, November 10, 2016. Shared pours can be accommodated
for an additional $75 food surcharge.

Caymus has long been regarded as one of the finest Cabernet producers in Napa. The 2001

1996 was a banner year in Bordeaux, just a tier below 1982 and 1961, and retail costs depict
the rarity of acquiring these bottles. Pauillac are the true stars of this vintage with these
First Growth wines leading the charge. The provenance of these wines is unmatched, having
been in the possession of the same very generous owner and, cellared properly with the
finest care including a quarter turn of the bottles every nine months. These are sure to be the

Long-time art-collectors and supporters of the Brooks, Tom and Lucy Lee invite you to dine

RAISE YOUR PADDLE
TO SUPPORT WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION
YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Tonight, you have the opportunity to provide vital support for many of the Brooks’ diverse
youth education programs. We ask that you raise your paddle in support of the outreach
programs below. By making even a small donation, you will directly assist the youth of our
community, as the Brooks strives to transform lives through the power of art.
ART BUILDS CREATIVITY (ABC), now in its thirty-seventh consecutive year, provides
creative, museum-based art education for fourth graders in local Title I elementary schools.
The multiple-visit program takes place both in the classroom and at the museum, giving
students—many of whom have no dedicated art instructor—a grounding in the visual arts,
while providing teachers with training on how to incorporate art into their standard academic
curriculum.
COMMUNITY DAYS allow families and friends to experience the museum in a fun, engaging
environment. These free events feature art-making activities, events like storytelling in the
galleries, musical and dance performances, and family-oriented gallery guides, all designed to
engage families with current exhibitions.
Our FREE WACKY WEDNESDAY PROGRAM provides a creative outlet during the summer for
families, day camps, and child care centers with an open artworks studio, gallery guides, and
children’s international short films every Wednesday in June and July.
And all year round our FREE SCHOOL TOUR PROGRAM opens up the world of art to students
from all over the area, with docent-led tours focusing on the collection and special exhibitions,
studio art projects designed to instill creativity and create meaningful connections to the
collection, and curriculum guides so that teachers have the resources to continue the learning
experience once the children leave the museum.

Growing up in rural Oklahoma, surrounded by
flat open spaces, Veda Reed has found endless
inspiration in the sky. Each painting represents a
particular moment seen and admired, then translated into a small study, and later into a large
composition. As she says, “I’m always fascinated to see the sky touch the ground.” Her night
sky paintings, in particular, are markers signifying people in her past, or particularly special
moments in her life.
Reed’s treatment of the landscape has the excitement of opera: crescendos of color meet
subtle renditions of shape and shift. Working with super-thin oil glazes, her technique and
process are hidden, thereby allowing pictorial drama to become paramount. Clouds take
on their own persona, becoming magical performers on Reed’s stage. Each painting is
choreographed like a ballet: the clouds dance singly or as a group.
Reed is the subject of an upcoming exhibition at the Brooks: Veda Reed, Paintings, 1956-2016
that will be on view June 18- September 4, 2016.
