Greetings From The President!
The South Shore Senior Partners are proud to announce
that we are being honored by the South Lake -Excelsior
Chamber of Commerce as a Community Hero for our
Organization Supporting Seniors. We will receive this
recognition on March 4th at the “Party of the Year”. We
are grateful to be recognized for the hard work that we
have put in to keep the activities going strong at the
SouthShore Center. As you can see in this month’s
SouthShore Times, if you are suffering from cabin fever
– we have the cure! This February we had a fabulous
Valentine party with our guest speaker Stan Tekiela.
This March you can come and celebrate St. Patrick’s
Day with an Irish Folk Singer and luncheon. We have
great art classes that are open to all levels. If you prefer
admiring other artist’s works, then join our Lake
Minnetonka Art Tour for a day of visiting local artists in
their home studios. We continue our Health services
with Happy Feet, Blood Pressure Checks and lectures
from Ridgeview. A class will be offered on Diabetes and
another class on Prescriptions and OTC Medications.
We emphasize the importance of exercise and are
starting a new Step-to-it class to correspond with the
Community-wide Step to it challenge, along with
another class on the Mind/Body connections. There are
fabulous trips offered through SCS for those who would
like to get away from it all. We have Book clubs looking
for new members to join. The SouthShore Center will
be hosting a Spring Garden Fair for all you gardeners
waiting for the snow to melt away. A poetry workshop
will be held to inspire all you poets and give you an
opportunity to perform at a microphone. There are
cooking classes and Make and Take meals to save you
time. We strive to be a clearinghouse for information
for the senior community as well as a great place to
come and socialize and enjoy a terrific lunch. Cabin
Fever? Not here - Spring is in the air and we can feel it!

Metro Paint-A-Thon
August 6 and 7
The Metro Paint-A-Thon, a program of
the Greater Minneapolis Council of
Churches, seeks homes to paint. Each year, on the first
weekend in August, Metro Paint-A-Thon rallies
volunteer teams from corporations, congregations, and
civic groups to paint the homes of low-income seniors
and people with disabilities. The program helps
homeowners remain living independently in their own
homes and improves neighborhoods throughout the
Twin Cities seven-county metropolitan area. Since 1984,
Metro Paint-A-Thon volunteers have painted more than
6,000 homes. Guidelines for qualification include: own
and occupy a single family home. Must be over 60 or
permanently physically disabled, monthly income must
not exceed $1,800/month (1 person household) or
$2,500 (2 person household). Call 612-721-8687 x321
for more info and an application.
Deadline to apply is May 6th.

Step To It Challenge
Get active with your community!
The Step To It Challenge is a fun, free, lighted-hearted
way to connect with family, friends, and neighbors, and
get moving again after a long winter. Shorewood, Excelsior, Minnetonka and Mound are four of the twenty-two
Hennepin County communities taking the challenge!
Participants from each city will have a chance to be
honored by Hennepin County and the Minnesota Twins
at a Twins home game during the 2011 season.
How does it work?

Mind Body Connection Class
Cross Train your Brain!
April 13th Wednesday 10:00-11:00am
No charge for this class—bring a friend.
Find out why proprioception(the sense of how your own limbs are
oriented in space) is so important in our daily lives. This special
exercise class helps build balance and dexterity. Class
participants will learn balance exercises that they can practice
at home and hopefully lower their chances of falls. These
exercises are focused on simple movements that help build
muscle memory and help keep supple brain connectors! The
first half of the class will focus on the physical exercises and
the second half will focus on pencil, paper and puzzle mind
work to help stimulate your brain!
As a Step To It participant, you will keep an ongoing
total of the steps you take during the challenge. Using

National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) is a
nationwide program committed to ensuring that all
adults with decision-making capacity have the
information and opportunity to communicate and
document their healthcare decisions. On April 16th
every year, hundreds of NHDD events are held around
the country. In Minnesota, attendees of NHDD events
will have the opportunity to learn more about and
complete a Minnesota Health Care Directive.
Understand the safe use of both prescriptions and
over the counter supplements. Hear some tips on
minimizing drug errors and side effects. Bring
your questions! There will be time for a question
and answer period.
Presented by Heidi Brady.

A Minnesota Health Care Directive is a document through which
individuals may exercise their right to control their own health care
in the event that they are not able to speak for themselves. Under
Minnesota law passed in 1998, a Health Care Directive combines
two separate documents: a Living Will and a Durable Power of
Attorney. Through a Minnesota Health Care Directive, individuals
may name an agent to act on their behalf when unable to speak for
themselves (Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care), provide
specific health care preferences and instructions (Living Will), or
both. Individuals will have access to further information and will be
able to complete a Minnesota Health Care Directive at most
Minnesota NHDD events.
Watch for more information on this event at the SouthShore Center
