Educating the Future
Lostock Hall Academy Vision 2015-16
LHA will be the local secondary provider of choice. We will equip all our learners with
the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours to achieve their full potential in a safe,
stimulating and supportive environment. Educating the future, Academy students will
be proud to achieve a successful transition into work or training in all walks of adult life.
Headteacher’s Message
Last night was the Academy’s Carol Concert and it was an evening filled with talent. Parents,
friends and Governors were feeling in the true Christmas spirit by the end of the night, thanks
to the hard work put in by Mr Doyle and the students who played in the band or sang. The day
before they had also shared the spirit of Christmas with the local community by singing in one
of the local care homes and had been rewarded by the wonderful comments they’d received.
You will see throughout this newsletter that our students are always trying to give something
back to the community. They have also demonstrated time and time again how well behaved
they are and how they represent not only us an academy, but you as parents/carers, in a way
that makes us very proud.
For some of the older students the last few weeks have been a difficult period having to sit
their mock exams. But despite a pressured time, the vast majority of them have shown that
they care about their future and have worked hard to do their best. With continued hard work
and effort I know that they will do well. A few have realised that 2016 will require a lot more
hard work and resilience, but recognise that it’s not too late.
I hope that everyone has a well-earned rest over the Christmas period and I look forward to
working with students, staff and parents in 2016.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas.

South Ribble Indoor Athletic Championships - Miss Rennox
Last Thursday and Friday a number of our talented sports students represented Lostock Hall Academy in the
South Ribble Indoor Athletic Competition held at Lostock Hall Academy. Students performed really well within
the different age categories U12’s and U13’s boys and girls sections and their attitude and team spirit at this
extracurricular athletics event was excellent. A massive congratulations to the Year 8 boys’ team who came 1st
within the competition.
Also the Young Leaders who helped to organise numerous track and field events were fantastic and showed an
excellent standard of leadership. Well done!

Send a Smile Shoebox Appeal - Miss Kozera
On Monday the 23rd November 9C gave an assembly about the “Send a
Smile Shoebox Appeal” organised by International Aid Trust.
They brought in items that we often take for granted such as toiletries,
pens, notepads and presents to be sent to poorer countries. They created
7 shoeboxes that were made for a variety of ages ranging from toddlers
to teenagers and pensioners.
It was wonderful to see the tutor group take part in a worthy campaign
and hopefully they will be sending smiles around the world.
KS4 Presentation Evening - Mrs Tucker
It was lovely to see so many of our staff and parents at the recent KS4 Presentation Evening celebrating the
fantastic academic achievements of our current Year 11 students and the summer 2015 leavers. Many existing
students received subject awards and attendance certificates which bodes well for their future. It was lovely to
see so many of our leavers return to school to be presented with their well deserved GCSE certificates, subject
awards and trophies. Gemma Robinson played a piece on the piano which was beautiful and very fitting and
this was overseen by Mr Doyle. This was finished off by a lovely buffet, produced by the Year 10 and 11 Food
Technology students and overseen by Mrs Parker and Miss Wade. Congratulations to all involved.
Well Done!

Cross, Jess Haynes, Jess Eastwood and Maddison McCarthy in Year 8, and Georgia Howarth and Alicia Campbell in Year 9. A special recognition to Lucy Moores who was awarded first place for her performance on vault.
Meet the Marines - Mrs Barber
Year 9 Christmas Cookies - Miss Kozera
Fourteen students braved the fierce Fleetwood
weather to participate in a ‘Meet the Marines’ day.
They admirably rose to the challenge as they were put
through their paces on a number of activities. These
included rock wall climbing, racing across a lake in
power boats, weapons handling, a laser quest battle
amongst the sand dunes, and finally a team exercise
which included crawling through the mud! We were
then treated to an impressive display of unarmed
combat demonstrated by the Marines.
Although physically demanding, the students found
the day enjoyable and rewarding.
@lostockacademy
Year 9 students made Christmas Cookies to raise
money for the school charity Cash for Kids.
The cookies sold out and were a brilliant success with
lots of students saying how yummy they were. Well
done Year 9’s.

My Beautiful Black Dog Workshop - Mrs Hardacre
A theatre company from London spent the morning with us on Thursday and spent time working with 38 Year 9
and 10 students. The workshop explored the subject of their touring show ‘My Beautiful Black Dog’ which deals
with mental and emotion health issues and the stigma surrounding these issues. Students watched extracts
from the show and spent time creating poems and songs with their ideas of emotional and mental health and
offered advice to each other.
Mrs Hardacre and Miss Lowe were very impressed by the students’ mature approach to this difficult topic and
their excellent advice to each other. Here are some examples of their advice:
“Look towards the sun and all your shadows will fall behind you.”
“Be confident, be kind, be humble, be sweet, be nice. Don’t put up with anyone who hurts you.”
“Even though your day might not be happy, give someone a smile to make their day.”
“Life’s too long to live with regrets.”
“Do what you want and be who you want, life is what you make it. Don’t let people bring you down and ignore
those who do. Everyone is different and beautiful in their own way. Life is short don’t waste it.”
“Don’t worry about your future, everything will be ok and you will eventually find out who you are and if it turns
out that you don’t, that’s ok too. Just don’t loose yourself trying to match what others believe you should be.”
The workshop leaders were really impressed with our students and so were we!
Remembrance Day Table Decorations
A big thank you to all the staff and students who helped create
the table decorations for the Remembrance Day Service
afternoon tea held at the Civic Centre in Leyland. As well as
providing a beautiful centrepiece during the event they where
later sold off to raise money for the Royal British Legion raising
a total of £260.

Postcard from the RE Classroom - Miss Jones
On the 2nd December, Miss Jones and Miss Gregson took a group of Year 9 GT students on a Faith Trail around
three places of worship in Preston. We received a warm welcome from the Imam at Masjid-e-Falah.
Students were given the opportunity to see the ablution rooms and the Imam perform the ritual washing that
take place before prayers. This was followed by an informative talk in the main prayer hall.
We then moved on to the Gujarati Hindu Centre. This was quite a contrasting experience with all the bright
paintings and murtis (images of the gods) displayed in the shrine. Finally, we visited a Sikh gurdwara were
students experienced the generosity shared to all visitor in the langar (Gurdwara kitchen). It was a valuable
insight to how faith is practiced within Preston and the similarities and differences between the faith
communities.
“I can honestly say that the trip was a great experience to be part of. I found the mosque the most interesting
place of worship as Muslims are often stereotyped and it was pleasing to look at things from a Muslim point of
view. I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn about others religions and their places of worship.” Libby H.
“By visiting these places of worship, I now know a lot more about how different religions worship, pray and
spend their free time. I feel this is important as many people in my community follow different religions and it’s
good to understand their personal beliefs.” Isabelle R.

BUGSY MALONE
Dear Parent / Carer,
Rehearsals are now well under way for this year’s school production ‘Bugsy Malone’ and staff
and students are working hard to ensure that by February the show will be packed full of
‘razzle, dazzle’!
Putting on a production is a major undertaking and is only possible with the generous help
and support of yourselves and the staff at LHA.
To this end we are appealing for volunteers to help with the various tasks that need doing, in
order to ensure the show is a success. Whether it is scouring charity shops for props and
costumes, distributing posters around the local area or helping to sew costumes, every little
bit of help is greatly appreciated, without it there would be no production.
If anyone is able or willing to help in any way with the production Mrs Hardacre and Mrs
Wexler would be very happy to hear from you.
Or, do you own your own business or know someone who does? Why not take this
opportunity to purchase an advertising space in the production programme? With an
audience of up to 200 people each night this is an excellent way to spread the word within
our local community whilst showing your support for our school.
