Focus on Pentecost and Renewal
May 2013
In today’s language we say their life choice
was for Christ and they all knew they were
never going to be the same again.
sit
eC
So why the caution?
They waited for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
There had been the horror and fear of the
death of their friend and master but this was
replaced by the Easter joy and peace of
Christ’s resurrection.
Then came the ascension of the Lord.
They were
changed into men
who would launch themselves into this
mission activity with a passion and conviction
to convert the world.
Di

not!
As our western culture drifts towards a
mishmash of apathy and spurious ethics and
self-centred fulfilment, it is only the gospel of
Christ that will bring fulfilment and fullness of
His love.

those fishermen,
tax collectors,
political activists
and the rest into
the energetic
Apostles and
evangelists for
Christ?
op
The power of the Holy Spirit
They still had to wait for the arrival of the
Holy Spirit and at Pentecost the waiting was
rewarded as the Holy Spirit was poured out
on them.
It may sound too easy but we have simply to
let the Spirit transform us, taking our faith
seriously, have the courage to speak out for
Christ, telling our own faith story to others.
oc
The Consecration took place in the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein.
Archbishop Thabo of Cape Town encouraged me to read out a letter from
Archbishop Sentamu and to bring greetings from the Blackburn Diocese. I also
shared the words from Joshua chapter 1: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be
terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever
you go.”

May that spirit of loving service mark our
own diocese as we also look forward to
new beginnings this year.
(* Mosamaria meaning ‘Good Samaritan’)

During the service for Father
Dintoe, the Archbishop prayed:
“Send down the Holy Spirit upon
Dintoe for the office and work of
Bishop Dintoe with his family, wife Zanele and a bishop in your church.”

We saw the excellent project which we support as a diocese, the Mosamaria* Aids
Ministry. The statistics are impressive. Mosamaria looks after 650 orphan and
vulnerable children; monthly it counsels
and tests 3000 people and trains over 6500
people on ARV treatment. Behind the
statistics are leaders and young men and
women who don’t wear mitres but are
inspired by the Holy Spirit and equipped by
him for inspirational works of love and
mercy. We also visited Sunflower
Children's Hospice which provides care and
compassion for all children with lifethreatening and life-limiting conditions.
There are 22 beds for children who cannot
be cared for at home.

It was a huge privilege to be
there with Jean, my wife; and
Canon John Hall and Mrs
Margaret Taylor. Canon Hall
preached at the service for the
Installation of the new Dean.
John is the Diocese Link Officer
for the Free State.

Many things impressed me on our visit. The hospitality was generous and the
spontaneity in worship, especially in the townships, was a real joy. People were
very relaxed and unhurried. They seemed to value living in the moment.

Please pray for Dintoe, his wife Zanele, and for Lazarus at the Cathedral. These two
men, alongside Bruce Harrison, the Diocesan Administrator, form a new leadership
team to serve the 129 congregations in the Free State Diocese.

Most Bishops don’t suit this particular piece of headwear but that is not true for
Dintoe. It looked splendidly appropriate on this humble, reluctant bishop who has
responded to the call of God. He is more than ready to take on big responsibilities
in the strength of the spirit at work within him.
This is true in many ways but not least with the
Consecration and Enthronement of Father Dintoe
Stephen Letloenyane as the new Diocesan Bishop and Fr Lazarus Mohapi as the
new Rector and Dean of the Cathedral.

The giving of the mitre is a symbol of a flame and is accompanied by the words:
“Receive this mitre, and in the strength of the Holy Spirit, lay hold on the crown of
ever-lasting life.”
As we prepare to welcome our next Bishop in
Blackburn Diocese, in our link Diocese of Free State
they are also welcoming a new dawn. Bishop Geoff
Pearson, Bishop of Lancaster, writes about the
consecration and enthronement of their new
Bishop, Dintoe Stephen, who visited Blackburn
Diocese in January and joined in our prayer service
for our own new Bishop while he was here.
In Free State in South Africa, the diocese has a title
for its annual budget, the most recent being ‘A
New Beginning’.

Emails flooded in from across the region and beyond.
Many featured in last month’s edition of The See and they have
continued to come in since then, including this message from the Rev
David Gibb of St Andrews in Leyland:
The announcement also featured heavily across social media, including
many tweets on Twitter!
Significantly BOTH of Lancashire’s regional daily papers devoted their
entire editorial columns on the day after the announcement to the news
of Julian’s appointment.
The Lancashire Telegraph said: “The Venerable Julian Henderson
chose his appointment to be announced as he visited Blackburn’s
Foodbank as a way of showing his commitment to tackling poverty and
deprivation in the area.
“And he also wanted to work with
everyone from all our communities no
matter what their religion.
The Lancashire Evening Post editorial
included the following: “Yesterday
marked an important day … with the
formal announcement of The Venerable
Julian Henderson as the new Bishop of
Blackburn.
