Usually the collages of Vincent Poole are steeped in London. He
compresses the wealth of inspiration offered by this trendy city into
archetypal silhouettes. Instantly you recognize the casual behavior
– with raised umbrella, or dog on the leash, with lipstick in the
elegantly modeled hand, expressing the role of a desired personality.
‘Does My Bum Look Big in This? asks the girl before her night out,
while she teases her partner with her outfit.
This story telling silhouette – originally coming from China as a
cut out, and for centuries used in Europe as well because of its
imaginative qualities, is thoroughly updated by Vincent Poole. His
silhouettes are filled with colourful photo fragments of the big city.
Logos, brands, united colours of the world: they all fight for space
in that slender body. Or do they seamlessly fit together? Vincent
Poole assembles the multitude of impressions with straight pins
– temporary, tomorrow things can be different – and prints the
ensemble on translucent, slightly unsubstantial material.
Bright
lights, big city… maybe that is the message?
A unique aspect of this exhibition, and never shown before, is that
Vincent Poole now explores a different metropolis – Amsterdam –
and on top of that uses a stage personality as a starting point.
Pia Douwes is an absolute star in her own field. Wanrooij Gallery
searches for doors in glass walls between art disciplines by further
cooperation with the Delamar Theater where she performs.
