I
am sure you are aware that our
current Education Pastor, James
Seward will be leaving this month to
become Senior Pastor of Maple Avenue
Baptist Church in Toronto, Canada. I
want to publicly thank James and Karen
for their years of service here at FBC
Lindale. They have labored hard for the
cause of God’s Kingdom and many
lives have been impacted through their
faithful ministry. Their commitment to
teaching and discipling people with the
Word of God has been a tremendous
blessing to our church that will have
long-lasting effects. I also want to personally thank James for laboring along
with me and the other pastors in the
difficult work of ministry. Men who are
firmly committed to the Word of God
and strive to walk with godly character
are not a dime a dozen. It is my prayer
that James and Karen will carry this
same passion for life and doctrine into
their next phase of ministry for the
work of God’s Kingdom at MABC. I
ask you to join me in that prayer.
I also ask you to be in prayer as we
search for God to send the next man to
serve alongside our other pastors in the
important task of education in the
church. I can think of no more important role than overseeing the discipleship and education of those who are
under the watch care of our church.
Our Sunday School, Women’s Bible
Study, Wednesday Night Discipleship,
and other education ministries of FBC
need the right man to help us continue
our strong commitment to seeing lives
transformed through the bold teaching
of God’s Word. Christ has commanded
us to go and make disciples by teaching
them to observe all that he has commanded. The education ministry of the
church plays a vital role in our obedience to that command.
We have begun the process of receiving
scores of resumes and the prayerful
search is underway. But this is more
than simply finding a person with just
the right credentials to fill a position. It
is about earnestly seeking God to help
us to find a man who has a love for his
Word, a life that exemplifies such love,
and a commitment to the ministry of
Christ’s church. Please pray as we diligently work and pray towards that end.

When Preference
Becomes an “-ism”
Andrew Pressley
I am strongly convinced that Stanley’s ribs (in Tyler) are far
superior to Country Tavern’s (in Kilgore), but others (Tim
Clemmons and Chad Michel) think I’m crazy. The feeling is
mutual. We all have our preferences. Even in church music,
we each have our druthers regarding style. I’ve told you before: there are songs that we sing as a church, that I choose
and I lead, that I don’t prefer – some that I just don’t even
like. But I still use some of these songs because they are congregationally accessible, truth-centered, and edifying. So instead of focusing on my preferences, I choose to focus on the
objective qualities of church music I just listed. And God uses
these songs that I don’t like to help bend my selfish perspective away from my own preferences each time we sing them.
It’s sanctifying!
Sometimes I sit and imagine the church where we only sing
songs that I like. Seems appealing enough, right? But as I start
to look around this imaginary room, I begin to realize something: it’s a fairly small room with very few people in it. In
fact, everyone looks a lot like me. How boring! How unhealthy! This picture doesn’t look a thing like FBC Lindale: a
diverse collection of people from many backgrounds across
generations. What’s more, it certainly doesn’t look like the heavenly worship that the Bible tells us about: every tribe, tongue,
and nation (from every age) gathered around the throne of our
Lord, passionately singing His praises. And to think that I just
assume we’ll be singing my favorite songs in eternity!
When we disagree about music in the church, we tend to elevate our own preferences above bearing with one another in
love and recognizing the church’s inherent (and needed) diversity. The tendency is to think something like “well, all those
other people can just find another place to worship.” Or, we
think we’ll just withdraw from the diverse body of believers
that is FBC Lindale. These are sad and sinful attitudes on both
sides of error: isolating ourselves from the body that we so
clearly need, or trying to drive others away so we can revel in
our preferences. When these thoughts manifest themselves in
our actions, it is the moment when our preferences become an
“-ism.” Ageism. Racism. Classism. I mourn these tendencies
in our hearts! This picture is not the body of Christ: it’s a selfcentered exaltation of me, myself, and I.
Get a Bible and read the following passages. No, really: go get
one. And take these passages seriously: Philippians 2:1-4; 1
Corinthians 1:10; 1 Corinthians 12:12-26; Ephesians 4:2-6;
Psalm 133:1. How convicting! It isn’t easy to work this out in
our worship services. But I’m committed to pursuing solid,
clear, biblical principles above preferences. After all, preferences left unchecked lead to exclusionism or isolationism. Far
be it from us! Pray that we’ll focus on the unity that God calls
us to above our own preferences.
The God Who Won’t Let Go
Ronnie Stribble
The Bible says in Job 6:8-9, "Oh that I might have my request,
and that God would fulfill my hope, that it would please God
to crush me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!"
Job was described as one of the greatest men in the Ancient
East. He was a man who was blameless before God and upright and just before men. He had seven sons, three daughters,
7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 donkeys.
Yet, trials and troubles came upon him and he lost it all, including his health. Job felt that life was over for him, and he cursed
the day he was born. He questioned the purpose of his existence. He even prayed God would release the painful grip He
had on him and turn loose His hand and cut him off and let
him go. But little did Job realize that there was purpose to his
pain, and that God could make sense out of his sorrow, and
bring fruitfulness from the famine that had struck his life.
Though Job thought he had nothing to live for, God knew he
had everything to live for. God's answer to his request could be
summarized by the prophet Isaiah, "Can a woman forget her
nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son
of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.
Behold I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your
walls are continually before me” (Isaiah 49:15-16). God never
forgot nor forsook Job, and blessed the latter end of his life
more than the beginning (Job 42:10-17). In the end he had
14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 donkeys---two times as much as he had at the beginning. So, if like
Job, you are going through a storm, then place your faith in the
God who won't let go.
Don’t Waste Your Summer
Ryan Taber
Every summer parents are looking for constructive things for
their children to do while they are away from school. Summer
is a great time to encourage your children to develop the habit
of a daily quiet time. It is also a great time to take time as a family for family devotions. Simply pick a book of the Bible and
read some everyday as a family and discuss it. The church also
promotes a book that contains 10 minute family devotions that
is a great resource that simplifies the prep work for doing family devotions. It’s called “Long Story Short:,” Ten Minute Devotions
to Draw Your Family to God and I will give a free copy of this
resource to the first 10 people, of any age, who respond by
contacting me at the church office. I pray you have a fruitful
summer.

You’ve Loved Us Well
James Seward
I want to take my last newsletter article to express the deep
gratitude Karen and I have for you. You have loved us well
and made ministry a joy. When we arrived here in 2008, we
were a young family of three. We immediately sensed the love
of the people here. I remember the Turnipseeds’ warm greetings, the Eylers inviting us into their home, the grace of the
Spearmans when I continually forgot their name, the jokes
played on me by Joe Swendson and Sam Ferguson, and so
many others who went out of their way to welcome us to this
place. As our family has grown from three to seven, you have
walked with us through each transition. We’ve had no family
around. That can be hard for a young, growing family. But this
church has loved us as well as any family could. We are especially grateful for how you walked with us through our adoption of Charlie and Eva and through the premature birth of
Mercy.
It is hard to say goodbye. This church has patiently overlooked my faults and missteps, all while encouraging me to
develop and use the gifts God has given me. I’ve learned from
the seasoned wisdom of older men and women at this church,
and I’ve felt the joy of partnering alongside many of the families who are giving themselves fully to the gospel. It’s particularly hard to leave behind such a wonderful staff. I’ve enjoyed
laboring alongside a group of pastors whose passion is to allow Christ to rule His church through His Word. I hope and
pray that I will be able to take the lessons learned here and put
them into practice in Canada.
We load the moving vans on June 12. After a stop in Illinois
to see family, I’ll drive my family up to Canada where I’ll begin
my time as Senior Pastor of Maple Avenue Baptist Church. I
would love for you to stay in touch. My email address will be
[email protected]. You can call me at 905.873.9211. For those
on Twitter, you can follow me at @James_Seward. And if
you’re ever in the Toronto area, we’ll have a guest room open
for you.
We will need your prayers, especially during the transition.
You will remain in our prayers.
With much love,
James Seward
Pastors Q & A
James has done a stellar job of answering all of those Bible
related questions you have always wanted an answer to. It is
time to pass on the baton. In the transition time, Andrew has
bravely accepted the challenge of answering your questions.
Let’s see if he is up for the challenge! You may email your
questions to him at [email protected] - ready, set, send
those questions!
Excavate and Dig
a Little Deeper
Vernon Hughes
Is it just me or has this really been a super-busy spring. It seems
like just yesterday it was New Years Day, and here we are almost to summer break. It seems like we’ve been doing so much
lately and most of it is coming to an end for a while. AWANA
just finished last week with our awards night. Baseball season
wraps up in the next couple of weeks. And, oh yeah, its almost
summer break. Well, here’s one thing that’s about to get
started: Excavate is our discipleship time for our children here
at FBC Lindale during the summer. Excavate consists of an indepth Bible study, game time, usually some fun sciencey (yeah,
I just made that word up) experiment, and a snack. We call it
Excavate because we’re trying to “dig a little deeper” into the
truths of God’s Word. Excavate goes from 6-7 p.m. on Sunday
evenings and starts on June 9th. Come join us, you’ll be glad
you did.
Now is the Time to
submit Your
Ministry Opportunities Form!
A Ministry Opportunities form was sent to every household in
our congregation in mid-May. Only a small fraction of these
forms have been returned. This makes the huge job of filling
the many and varied volunteer positions at FBC a difficult task
for our Committee on Committees.
We encourage you to prayerfully consider where you can serve
the body of Christ here at FBC.
Please take a moment now to fill out your form and turn it in
to the church office or be sure to place it in the offering plate
Sunday morning.
Notes of Thanks
I would like to thank my church family and the gang that was
with me in Grapevine for all their prayers, cards, calls, and
food - and the two angels that took me to Baylor.
Margie Cowen
I would like to thank everyone for the prayers, expressions of
sympathy, cards, and donations to the church library in memory of my sister, Martha Dry. It is great to be a part of the loving family of First Baptist Church.
Sam Ferguson
Thank you FBC family for your continued prayers and for all
the expressions of love and kindness.

The Intolerance of Tolerance (D.A. Carson)
Tolerance is fast becoming the only “virtue” valued in America. You can do whatever you want and believe whatever you want, as long as you don’t think others are wrong for doing or believing differently.
But is this really what tolerance is? And might this brand of tolerance actually be destructive to what true
tolerance is? Carson’s insights and clear reasoning make this an important book for all who want to think
through these and other questions relating to “tolerance.”

The first step of cultural and political engagement is congregations
full of people who demonstrate the gospel. Your congregation’s
decision to accept a list of new members is more significant in the
long-term than a presidential election.
