Story: ST2533
“Ready-to-eat” is defined as the status of the food being ready for immediate
consumption at the point of sale. It could be raw or cooked, hot or chilled,
and can be consumed without further heat-treatment including re-heating.
RTE should be distinguished from RTC, or Ready-to-cook foods, which
require some form of heat treatment.

The RTE market witnessed a growth of 7% between the year 2000 and 2005.
In 2009, Indian RTE foods market was estimated to be around $33.5M,
registering a CAGR of approximately 15% over the last five years. The RTE
segment is expected to grow to a $604.20 million industry by 2015.
The United States is one of the major countries of Ready-to-eat foods producers and consumers. All major RTE foods producers with an exception
of Nestle belong to the US. Due to the large size of the market, advertisers
are quickly attracted. The television advertising budget average for the food
industry is 2–4 percent of sales, but the RTE foods segment attracts about
13 percent of the sales as advertising budget.

Fun Facts & Success Story
RTE Fun Facts
• August 31 is National Trail Mix Day. In Australia and New
Zealand, they call trail mix Scroggin. Trail mix is also called
GORP (Good Old Raisins and Peanuts or Granola, Oats,
Raisins, and Peanuts).
• In 1867, Henre Nestle of Switzerland invented the first
artificial infant food, Nestle’s Milk Food.
• Jerky is a means to preserve meat without refrigeration.
The origin of the word Jerky is from Native American
“Charqui” which means “to burn meat.”
• The Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) is a self-contained,
individual field ration in lightweight packaging bought
by the United States military for its service members
for use in combat or other field conditions where
organized food facilities are not available.
• Gerry Thomas is the man who invented both the product and the name of the
Swanson TV Dinner. In 1954, Swanson TV Dinners fufilled two post-war trends: the
lure of time-saving modern appliances and the fascination with a growing innovation,
the television. More than 10 million TV dinners were sold during the first year of
Swanson’s national distribution.
Success Story
A large food producer in Dennison, Texas, was experiencing
uneven cooking in a fryer application as burritos were
floating off of a competitor’s wire belt. Since only one
side of the product was being cooked, significant waste
occurred, costing approximately $10,000 in product loss.
To solve this problem, Habasit recommended the ST2533
Super High Temperature modular belt to run atop the
product and guarantee thorough cooking through full
submersion in the fryer. The ST2533 belt has been running
successfully for over three years, and the food producer has
also exchanged their other belts for the superior Habasit
product.
• Super High Temperature material
• Excellent for cooling and draining
• 35% open area and 60% open contact area
• Also available in a flat top version
