Men’s Cutting including traditional barber techniques
Barbering has really made a comeback in Australia, however currently the Australian Training Framework does not
recognise a Barbering certificate training package.
BSH has been overwhelmed with requests for pathways to a career in barbering, so we have packaged together a Men’s
Cutting Course – incorporating traditional barbering techniques.
The course runs for 16 weeks and includes skill acquisition in the overcomb, taper cut, flat top and other techniques
specifically aligned to barbering, this is coupled with beard and moustache shaving and design.
Elements of the course also include the hot towel service with face and neck shaves using a traditional straight edge
razor (cut throat razor).
Upon completion of both theory and practical elements of the course
students will obtain a Statement of Attainment.
Career Opportunities:
• Men’s barber shop
• Men’s section in salon
• Own business

2009 & 2010 IHS Winner of the Battle of the Colleges in Queensland
Education Programmes
Our short workshops and refresher courses are designed with the individual student in mind. These classes are self
paced and our Senior Educators will supervise you through the course to help you get the most out of your time at either
Brisbane or Gold Coast School campuses. With rolling starts and a flexible timetable you can commence your course at
a time that is convenient for you and we will develop a timetable to suit your needs.
Workshops
Our workshops are ideal for hairdressers or stylists currently working in the industry who want to refresh or enhance
a particular skill set. The day (or days) can cover topics such as perming, sculpting, colour work, upstyles or any of the
increasingly popular men’s cutting and traditional barbering techniques.
One - Six Week Workshops
These workshops are suited to stylists who already have their hairdressing qualification but decided to take some time
off and would like to fine-tune their skills before getting back on to the salon floor. Consisting of theory and practical
elements the focus of your course is working on current industry trends and building up your speed and confidence
behind the chair. The flexibility of these courses allows you to pick subjects of interest to you to ensure the maximum is
learnt from your time at BSH. Because these workshops are designed to suit your specific needs and development, a
flexible attendance schedule can be arranged.
Gap Training
Gap Training programs are designed for students who have completed part of their apprenticeship or fast track training
program. A Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) process is followed and administered by one of our senior educators to
establish the length of gap training that is required for the prospective student. After the assessment process has been
completed a training plan can be developed to assist you in completing your Certificate III in Hairdressing without relying
on an employer.
Cluster Training
Cluster training delivers complete individual units of competency of the Certificate III such as upstyling, men’s cutting or
even colouring. Units will be taken directly from the Certificate III in Hairdressing package and successful graduates will
receive a Statement of Attainment for the units successfully completed. Course length times will vary depending on the
units delivered.
Make-up Artists Styling Course
This short course is designed specifically for Make-up Artists who are wanting to extend their skills to include upstyles
for their clients. At the end of the course you will be able to achieve a variety of elegant formal upstyled hair designs to
give your client a total look for their special day or event.
Student honours - 2009 Emerging Stylists Awards and 2010 Queens Plaza Avant Garde Competition: first place
School Based Programmes
School Based Apprenticeships Pre-Vocational Training
School based apprenticeships allow students in years 10 - 12 to commence
their apprenticeship whilst still working towards their High School Certificate.
This initiative is government approved and accredited training qualifications
can be earned to coincide with a part-time paid job. It’s a win-win situation
with students able to finish their schooling while working in the industry of
hairdressing.
Study can be undertaken at either the Brisbane or Gold Coast campuses
for your school based apprenticeship and the program is delivered in a selfpaced and flexible method. Students can start anytime throughout year,
and depending on what is agreed upon between the employer, school and
parents, we offer “off-the-job” training either one day per fortnight or in
blocks during the school holidays.
Students need to be employed by a hairdresser before they can be registered
as an apprentice under the school based apprenticeship pre-vocational
training program.
Pre-Vocational Training - Certificate II in Hairdressing
The pre-vocational Certificate II course offers private training for students
in Year 10 (or above) who wish to undertake studies towards a career in
hairdressing while still at school.
In conjunction with the school, parents and student the training is undertaken
one day per week and competent units can contribute towards your leaving
certificate (holiday block training is also available).
BSH provides a flexible self-paced program that requires approximately 350
hours of education comprising of a mix of both theory and practical, before
completion. As a holder of a Certificate II in Hairdressing you will receive
credits towards a Certificate III in Hairdressing, and could be employed as a
salon assistant or as a first stage apprentice with 3 months credit towards
your apprenticeship.
Intra-school competitions just for our students, allowing you to battle it out against your peers!
Apprentices
Brisbane School of Hairdressing has been educating hairdressers since 1969 and in 1997 BSH became the first private
hairdressing college in Queensland to train apprentices.
There are many benefits afforded to you by selecting BSH as your Registered Training Organisation (RTO). You will gain
extensive knowledge from our Educators and first-class training facilities. Our Educators are passionate and industry
current with an enormous amount of experience to share with the student.
The Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) will contribute towards the cost of training and assessment
services for eligible Apprentices. All indentured apprentices must be an Australian Resident and working in a salon to
enrol in this program. Apprentices are also required to pay a student contribution fee towards the cost of their training
& education and these fees have been set by DETE.
Apprentices typically attend one day per week or on block release program which is convenient for students travelling
long distances for their training. Apprenticeship training is self-paced, competency based and is dependent on how
often and regularly the student attends the college. The average apprentice usually takes two to two and a half years to
complete their “off-the-job” training.
STEPS TO BECOMING AN ‘ACTIVE’ APPRENTICE
Once you have secured a position with an employer you will need to take the following steps to register as an Australian apprentice. You
may also contact us if you wish to transfer your current RTO to our College. Visit www.apprenticeshipinfo.qld.gov.au
1. Contact your preferred Australian Apprenticeship Centres (AAC)
An AAC will assist you and your employer to complete the training contract. To find a suitable AAC in your region call 13 38 73 or visit
http://www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au/search/aacsearch.asp.
2. Nominate BSH as your RTO
We work with you and your employer to help develop a training plan, deliver training, assess your achievement of skills and issue the
qualification on successful completion of your apprenticeship.
3. Enrol at BSH
You may enrol at college anytime throughout the year, however you need to be signed up by an AAC who will then advise your wish to study
at BSH. We will contact you and complete a Training Plan documenting the roles and responsibilities of you and your employer. The plan
will set out what you will learn, where you will learn, how you will be trained and assessment schedules. Once we receive all the necessary
paperwork correctly completed and DETE has issued a Training Registration Number we will organise an orientation and commencement date
for training. Some days are busier than others so please have a second training day option if your first choice is unavailable.
Important Information
• A Training Plan will need to be signed by all parties and returned before orientation and training can commence.
• This plan includes the compulsory units of training and selected electives and is a vital part of the paperwork.
• The student contribution for apprenticeship training for Certificate III in Hairdressing is determined annually by DETE and is charged on
commencement of each unit.
Pivot Point is the world’s most widely used and respected hairdressing educational system
Important Information
Course Prerequisites
To enrol in Certificate II or the Certificate III in Hairdressing a student must be 15 years and ideally have completed a Year
10 or equivalent education or be a mature age student.
No hairdressing experience is required to commence in either the Certificate II or the Certificate III in Hairdressing,
however, prerequisites do apply for the Certificate IV in Hairdressing and further information is available upon request.
English Proficiency
All students must successfully complete the school’s Literacy & Numeracy test before enrolment is accepted. If English
is not your first language, we recommend you have an IELTS of 5.5 or satisfactory completion of an Upper Intermediate
Level from a registered Australian English College. This score is only a recommendation and not compulsory for entrance
to Certificate III in Hairdressing. International Students require an English proficiency of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent before
commencing the Diploma of Salon Management. All classes are taught in English.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) means current competencies are recognised regardless of how, when or where the
learning occurred. This learning could be a combination of formal or informal training and education, work experience or
general life.
To be granted RPL, the school’s assessors need to be confident that the student is competent against the endorsed
competency standards or outcomes as specified in the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) for the accredited courses
and that the evidence you have provided is authentic, valid, reliable, current and sufficient.
Applications for RPL must be completed prior to the students commencement date and a fee will be charged per Unit of
Competency which will be deducted from the full course fees. RPL may effect the visa conditions for international students
as well as the duration of the course. To obtain an RPL Application Kit, including costs, please contact the school at the
time of your enquiry.
Direct Credits
Our College accepts and recognises qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by other RTOs registered in
Queensland or other States and Territories of Australia. Direct credits will be given for units already completed and this
process takes five working days and must be completed before the commencement of your course.
Lodging an Application for Enrolment
Please submit your enrolment form in person, by email or post to the details as listed on the enrolment form. The school
must receive the original enrolment form before the commencement of your course. It is also vital that you read and agree
to the information in the enrolment form including the Refund Policy, School Rules, Privacy Act and Social Media Policy etc.
