Life Governors
At next week’s Life Governors’ Dinner the School Council will appoint an additional member to the School’s
Life Governors. Life Governors are appointed by the Council to recognise outstanding service to our School
over an extended period of time. This year we will appoint Mr Trevor Henley, who retired last year after an
extraordinary career at CGS. Mr Henley joined the Music School in 1974, and in the years that followed
made a significant contribution to the culture of music at our School.
At the same dinner, we also thank staff members who have given 25 years of service to Camberwell Grammar
School. This year, Mrs Kaye Munro from our Finance Department, will be honoured in this way.

Enrolments for 2017
Our School is currently in the very fortunate position of having a strong demand for places. Consequently,
if parents are contemplating withdrawing their sons next year for any reason could they please pass this
information on to our Registrar, Mr Peter O’Connell. I do remind all parents that our policy is to ask families
for one term’s notice of any potential change in enrolment. In addition if you have a younger son that you
wish to enrol over the next few years please make sure you have let our Registrar’s office know well in
advance – there are currently waiting lists for Year 7 entry as far ahead as 2023 and the lists for 2024 and
2025 are filling rapidly.
Grandparents’ Day – Tuesday 25 October
We are always delighted to invite Grandparents of all present students to visit the school on Tuesday
25 October. The format for the day will allow grandparents to spend time with their grandsons following a
morning concert and then conclude with a light lunch. Please encourage all grandparents to visit us and to
see the excellent work being done by our students.
Immunisations
The last round of immunisations for the year will take place on Tuesday 16 August in the foyer of the
Performing Arts Centre. This will be the third and final vaccination of HPV for the Year 7 group and catchups for those who have missed out during the year. For students needing a catch-up vaccination, parents
will receive a letter regarding the procedure for the day. If you require any further information or have any
questions regarding our immunisation program, please contact our Student Health Coordinator, Ms Rhonda
Nicholson on 9835 1777.
Maths Games Day
Approximately 70 teams participated in the Maths Games Day last week at Mt Scopus. Two of our four teams
placed in the top 10 and one of our teams came third. At yesterday’s Assembly our Year 10 that placed third
consisting of James Bickerdike, Thomas Choi, Ming Kim Low and Michael Tan were presented with their
medals.

The Australian History Competition has been designed to challenge students to apply their historical
knowledge and skills to unseen sources. Last week Oliver Papillo (Year 9) was presented with a High
Distinction in the Australian History Competition. Oliver also gained the title of joint National Champion
in Year 9 of the competition. At yesterday’s Assembly Oliver was congratulated on this achievement and
presented with a certificate and medal.
ICAS Science Competition
At last week’s Assembly, 18 boys were presented with High Distinction certificates for their efforts in the
ICAS Science Competition held earlier this year. I am delighted to announce that Oliver Papillo (Year 9) and
Benjamin Chesler (Year 10) have been awarded medals in their year level and will be presented with them
at an official ceremony later in the year. Congratulations Oliver and Benjamin on this achievement.

There has been an excited buzz in Middle School in recent days with the opening of the Middle School
play. I am very much looking forward to being in the audience tonight as the cast performs the second
of three shows. It has been a major undertaking and I congratulate the cast, technical crew, Mrs Jennifer
Bennie (costumes) and all other assistants who have put the production together. Special congratulations to
Mr Drew Stocker for his outstanding work with the cast.

Today saw the conclusion of what has been an outstanding team effort to raise money for this great cause.
The combined teams have worked superbly together and I have been impressed by the level of organisation
and planning that has gone into each initiative. Several groups took their fundraising projects outside the
school and we also had a plethora of food stalls in Middle School over recent weeks. All money raised is now
due in and I am looking forward to the Year 8 Social next term, where we will announce the final total raised
and award prizes for innovation and cooperation.
Well done to all of the boys who volunteered to be part of this project, and my thanks to the many parents
who helped their sons with their planning and implementation of initiatives. Once again, it has been an
incredibly worthwhile venture, with successful groups displaying skills in collaboration, communication,
entrepreneurship and organisation.
ICAS Science Competition
In Term 2 CGS students competed in the University of NSW sponsored International Science Competition
(ICAS). This event attracts over 1.5 million entries from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
Congratulations to Michael Alexander, Gregory Kerdemelidis (both Year 6), Luke Doblin, Andrew Ho,
Alex Lew, Zach Lewis, Angus Oldham (all Year 7) and Kevin Yang (Year 8) on achieving High Distinction
certificates.
Australian History Competition
Several Year 8 students entered the Australian History competition, which is run by the Australian History
Teachers’ Association of Australia and involves participants answering a range of general knowledge
questions on areas of Australian history. Well done to Daniel Duong (Credit), Rohan Hodges (Distinction),
Kaelan Fraser (High Distinction) and Kevin Yang (High Distinction).

The Senior Water Polo team continue to dominate and lead the competition after two rounds. Because of
the nature of the competition they are only required to finish on top to win, no finals this season. A top of the
table clash against Ivanhoe this week will be the greatest test so far.
Calendar
Well done to the Junior Squash team who competed in the annual Squash Victoria Championships at MSAC
on Thursday. They finished eighth after making the finals a couple of months back.
A couple of successful presentation evenings so far to wrap up the winter season in hockey and football. Well
done to all award recipients and the ‘Friends of Groups’ for their support too.
Lastly, continue to follow #CamberwellSport on Facebook for all the latest news, summer trials information
and the winter ‘Onwards to Victory’ newsletter.

Sport Report – Spring Round 2
The Water Polo season continued last Saturday with the Junior teams winning one game and the Intermediate
teams having a tough round with both teams going down to stronger opposition. The Open team faced
Trinity. A very tight first quarter saw Camberwell slightly ahead but knowing full well that a battle was at
hand. During the rest of the match Camberwell eased away scoring goals more frequently to win 12 goals
to 4. A very encouraging display of work in defence saw Projit Banerjee, Matthew James and Will Exon
(all Year 11) prove a formidable combination repelling many promising forward moves by Trinity.
This was reinforced at the scoring end with Aaron Campbell (Year 11), Rowan Solomon (Year 12) and
Chris Kerdemelidis (Year 11) sharing the goals. This week sees the team looking to consolidate top position
on the ladder if they secure a win against Ivanhoe.
Saturday saw the first combined athletics trials for 2016, with six schools competing at Doncaster in perfect
conditions. Pleasing numbers of athletes were present across most events, particularly in the junior age
groups that saw Camberwell perform well. Early results certainly indicate that there is great potential within
the squad.
At Under 15, Tom Ireland, Alex Wilson-Brown (both Year 8) and Ryan Box (Year 9) were strong over 100m,
200m and 400m, setting a great example to others and bodes well for the future. In the distance events,
Henry Macdonald, Thomas Graves and Ryan Fitzgerald (all Year 9) all recorded personal best times.
At Under 16, Dilina DeSilva (Year 10) and Matthew McKenna (Year 9) were impressive. Mitchell Coffey
(Year 10) returned to the track for the first time to post a pleasing 100m time and strong long jump result.
Lachlan Purcell (Year 9) continued his rise in the middle distance rankings with the second fastest 800m of
the day.
At Under 17, Matthew Hobson (Year 10) returned after two years away from the squad and stamped
his authority with a strong 800m time. Jake Purcell (Year 11) looked powerful over 100m and 200m and
Matthew Perri’s (Year 10) consistency in the discus was encouraging. Beau Frawley’s (Year 11) 1.60m high
jump was a great start to his 2016 campaign.

Finally, Captain Dan Straw (Year 12) and a strong 100m time from Vice Captain Terry Yan (Year 12) led
the Open ranks. Harrison Lucas (Year 12) was commanding in his 3000m and 1500m trials, well supported
by Hans Anjou (Year 12) and Jonathon Thiele (Year 11). Next Saturday sees the squad take a road trip to
Frankston for Round 2.

Music
Music rehearsals across all levels of the school have taken on an extra edge of excitement this week, with
phrases like “one week to go” creating an extra sense of focus and determination amongst staff and students
alike. The sounds emanating from rehearsal rooms are full of expression and determination, and we are all
very much looking forward to sharing our performances with a full house at Hamer Hall. While the finishing
touches are being put on all of the items, I would like to remind boys and parents to carefully note times of
extra rehearsals, particularly the workshop weekend for Senior Orchestra, Senior Stage Band and Concert
Band next week. All details have been provided to the boys via Schoology Groups and rehearsals, but if
there is any uncertainty, students are encouraged to contact their ensemble leader or the Music Office.
I would like to encourage all CGS musicians to embrace a sense of 100% responsibility so that all are prepared
and in the right place, at the right time as we head into these final rehearsals and our big performance at
Hamer Hall next week.
‘Vienna’ Grand Prize Virtuoso 2016
Congratulations to Freddy Branson (Year 6) who has been chosen as a first prize winner of the International
Music Competition ‘Vienna’ Grand Prize Virtuoso 2016. He has been selected from an international field to
perform at the Metallener Sall Musikverein in Vienna over the Term 3 school holidays. This is a great honour
for him, and well deserving for all of the effort that he puts into his music, both within and outside school. We
wish him well as he travels to Europe in a few weeks’ time.
