Issue 04
Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ;
On the day I sit to write this little message, spring has officially arrived! Thanks be to God
for the renewal of all living things after a long, cold winter. With the arrival of spring, the most important and
joyous celebration of the Christian year cannot be far behind—it’s almost Easter! First, after our fun at other’s
expense on April 1st, we encounter those three days which prepare us for the feast in celebration of the
Resurrection of Our Lord. We have several names for those three days: Holy Week or The Great Three Days.
Christmas is a glorious time of year for obvious reasons. Church people are blessed in December because the
secular world is also preparing for our national Christmas holiday and everyone is given reason to stop and
consider the birth of Jesus. Holy Week and Easter are not observed as national holidays, and our community
rhythm turns us away from the reason Jesus came to us in the beginning. We go on spring break.
Now, don’t get me wrong. We should care for our well-being and we certainly should make time to make special
memories with our friends and family. These are healthy pursuits and spending relaxing time with people we love
has always been part of “Sabbath keeping.” However, it’s also essential that we understand the meanings that the
most sacred days in our church year hold for the faithful. Whether you might be heading for the last skiing of the
season, or chasing the sun to find fun in the sand, or just travelling in order to spend time with distant loved ones,
turn your thoughts to the deep meaning that flows from our observance of Maundy Thursday (Apr. 2), Good Friday
(Apr. 3), and the Easter Vigil (Apr. 4).
Here are some brief descriptions of the Holy Days which you may wish to pass on to your children.
Maundy Thursday: With nightfall our Lenten observance comes to an end, and we gather with Christians
around the world to begin the Three Days during which we participate once again in the saving power of
Jesus’ passing over from death to life. At the heart of the Maundy Thursday liturgy is Jesus’ commandment
to love one another. As Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, we are called to follow His example as we
humbly care for one another, especially the poor and the unloved. At the Lord’s Table, we remember
Jesus’ sacrifice of His life, even as we are called to offer ourselves in love for the life of the world.
Good Friday: At the heart of the Good Friday liturgy is the passion according to John, which proclaims
Jesus as a triumphant king who reigns from the cross. The ancient title for this day – the triumph of the
cross – reminds us that the church gathers not to mourn this day but to celebrate Christ’s life-giving
passion and to find strength and hope in the tree of life. In the ancient bidding prayer we offer petitions for
all the world for whom Christ died. Tonight’s liturgy leads us into our celebration of baptism Saturday
evening.
Easter Vigil: This is our Passover with Christ from darkness to light, from bondage to freedom, from death
to life. Tonight is the heart of our celebration of the Three Days and the pinnacle of the church’s year.
The resurrection of Christ is proclaimed in word and sign, and we gather around a pillar of fire, hear
ancient stories of our faith, welcome new sisters and brothers at the font, and share the food and drink of
the promised land. Raised with Christ, we go forth into the world, aflame with the good news of the
resurrection.
I look forward to seeing you in worship during Holy Week. If, however, you are to be away during these
important days, remember your Lord in prayer. Christ was born in order to serve us, die for us, and rise
to lead us to eternal life. Never forget.
Yours in Christ,
Pr. Mark

Invite
someone
to
church
— The most significant day and
perhaps the easiest one to extend an invitation to church is Easter Sunday. Invite
someone you know, offer to bring him or her to church.
I see this as a great opportunity for evangelism to begin and for a relationship to
start between our church and all of the visitors who come that Sunday. Let each of
us greet and share Christ’s love to everyone, even those we do not know.
Obviously, the primary weekend worship service will be the most common way that people are exposed to the
Gospel, but many people come to know Jesus through a small group, a recovery ministry, an outreach event or in a
youth or fellowship situation. So think beyond the Easter invitation and invite someone to all of our
ministries. Easter can be a start to a longer-term relationship.
Pray for your neighbors — Remember your neighbors in your prayers. But you can also go a step further by
asking your neighbors directly if they would like you to pray for them. Sometimes people are much more receptive
to your personal intervention than your personal invitation to church. Demonstrate care and concern.
Visit the housebound — Not everyone will come to church on Easter Sunday. Quite frankly, some are not able
to attend a church service even if they want to. Visit the housebound and offer to bring dinner to them. Any
major holiday can be especially lonely for people who cannot get out. Be Christ’s hands and feet, and go forth.
“I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.”
Friend, Easter is the #1 most likely time for un-churched people to come to church. Send an email / text /
Facebook message / tweet to all your friends saying, "I am inviting a friend to church on Easter, I want you to do so
as well."
And finally, pray. Pray before. Pray after. Pray during. Jesus said we can do nothing without Him. Pray for our
pastor that he would deliver the Word. Pray that God would move in a mighty way.

We g e t b y w i t h a l i t t l e h e l p
from our friends.
“’We
have two seasons at St. Gregory’s.
Rick had said to me – ‘Easter, and Easter’s
coming.’” (P.171) Take This Bread by Sara Miles.
Sara Miles writes of her personal conversion. But it is more than a “Gee, I found the Lord, isn’t it wonderful story.”
It’s a “Gee, I found the Lord and this is what he called me to do story. And she did it.
We have just made it through the quiet, thoughtful, penitent season of Lent to the glorious season of Easter. As
Christians, we know that Easter is the most glorious day of the year. It’s the day that God proves that he keeps
his promises. We know the story. God sent his Son to us to save us, to bring us back. Jesus modeled how to
live the faithful life. He loved the unlovable – us! He spent time with the people that society didn’t love and
shocked the world. He sought out the people that the world had forgotten, or had judgmentally turned their back
on. Why did Jesus do this? To teach us to do the same. He made that very clear in Matthew 25. We are to do
the same.
So as we enjoy our lovely Easter brunches and dinners surrounded by family and friends, let’s think of those that
don’t have what we have. Visit shut ins, call lonely people, share yourselves with someone in need. Share our
personal bounty – our presence, our love, our caring. Drop our preconceived notions of their worth and just
love them. The bonus is that when we do this, we get more than we give. Always. And we do what God asks us
to.
‘“I’m not a good enough person to stand up there in front of everyone,” he said. “I’d have to be a whole lot more
holy.” I laughed. “The thing about serving is that it’s not about you.” (Miles, P. 135)
Blessed Easter
Carry it on.

The mission statement of Handbags of Hope states that, “we provide basic necessities of education, support and
advocacy through community collaboration to end domestic and sexual violence and to promote a safe
environment for all.”
Founder, Jackie Bobcean, grew up in an abusive home. She knows firsthand about this fear. Jackie and Handbags of
Hope provides gently used handbags with personal necessities to abused women who have fled an abusive
relationship, often at night with only the clothes on their backs and sometimes with children.
In 2006, she launched Handbags of Hope out of her home. Since then over 17,000 handbags have been given out.
Now, the non-profit is proud to announce that it has its own building in Eastpointe. Handbags of Hope is run
purely on donations. Jackie and her volunteers fill the handbags with items like: hairbrushes, tissues, manicure sets,
and handwritten notes of encouragement.
How can Beautiful Savior help? Let’s have a handbag filler drive between March 15 and April 26. The
filler items can be travel or hotel sized. Please bring your filler items to church and place
them in the purple Handbags of Hope bin located near the narthex entrance. A list of
filler items is below. All items collected will help fill 2,000 handbags to be distributed for
Mother’s Day. Together we can give gifts of beauty, empowerment and hope!! Contact
Kathy Barrett with questions, [email protected] or 248-495-5442.
FILLER ITEMS: *Hairbrushes; *Manicure sets; *Wallets; Lip balm; Tissues; Memo pads
& pens; Shampoo; Conditioner; Lotion; Hand sanitizer; Personal hygiene items.

Stephen Ministry
The snow is melting! The snow is melting!! Of course that’s on everyone’s mind. After one of
the coldest winters in recent memory things are starting to thaw. Naturally melting snow leads
to water and water can turn into puddles and if you’re walking on the side of the road a puddle
can turn into an unpleasant surprise. I saw some poor guy get nailed the other day as he was
standing at a corner …. a car buzzed by, completely oblivious to the puddle and the pedestrian.
The resulting splash appeared to be of historic proportions, you know, like a once in a hundred years event. The
poor guy tried to get out of the way, but it happened so fast he never had a chance. It was actually kind of funny,
and I caught myself snickering, but I was really glad it wasn’t me! Fortunately the sun was out and the temperature
was a balmy 50.
So here it is, you knew it was coming … LIFE is a lot like that little story. You’re going along minding your own
business when out of the blue, SPLASH; you get hit with 20 gallons of cold street water, right when you least expect
it! It doesn’t take much imagination to see that the street water could also be an injury, an illness, a job loss, or a
relationship problem. Sometimes if you’re just able to tell your story to someone it helps you to put things in
perspective, and feel better about your life. In Stephen Ministry we can’t shield you from the street water, but we
can hand you a towel. We’ll be there to listen to your story and help boost your spirit. It can work wonders!
In case you’re wondering, a Stephen Minister is trained to be a caring listener and spiritual helper. If you need us,
we’d love to be there for you, as Christ would want us to be.
And if this sounds like a calling for you, we’d love you to join us!!
Need a Christian friend to talk to? That would be a Stephen Minister!

SEND CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE & FAMILIES SUFFERING FROM
HOMELESSNESS TO CAMP- JULY 11-15 Lutheran Social Services of Michigan has partnered with
Living Water Ministries for the last three years to offer a special overnight camp experience for children & families
ages 8 and older who are:

In Foster Care (50 kids,)

Living at the Wayne County Family Center (25).
This week of camp provides a safe environment to explore faith, love, and grace in a beautiful outdoor setting, while
giving us an opportunity to help these children to gain a sense of community in Christ. A special effort is made to
reunite siblings that have been separated through foster care for this week at camp.
Thanks to help from other donors like you, over 120 children served by LSSM have already benefitted from this week
long camp experience. In 2015, we desire that 75 more individuals have the same experience!
You can sponsor one or more of these children to a week of camp with a donation of $550. Your gift of $550 will
send one child to Stony Lake for one week ($400) with a sleeping bag, a pillow and duffle bag ($100), toiletries and a

A Different Kind of
Good Friday Service
Our 7 p.m. service on Good Friday will be presented differently this year than it has in previous years. As we
remember Christ crucified, we will be using a series of personal prayer experiences during the service. These
prayer experiences will be set up in “stations” for the congregation to rotate through and are all based on the last
words of Christ. Our hope is that this service will be meaningful and reflective, and that the interactive nature of
the experience will be accessible to everyone—children and adults alike.
Those who wish to use these stations may do so following the noon service or at any time during Good Friday.

ELCA Youth Gathering Preparation Meetings
All youth attending the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering are expected to attend a monthly
preparation session. Please put these dates on your calendar. (All begin at 10:15 a.m.)
* Sunday, April 12 (includes writing our group covenant)
* Sunday, May 3
The date for our session in June will be determined later. The June session will likely include
a parent meeting to go over the final details. These sessions allow us to study the theme
scriptures, get to know each other, and make other plans for the Gathering together.
ELCA GATHERING FUNDRAISERS
The ELCA Youth Gathering offers our young people an opportunity to serve
together, learn, experience powerful worship, and get a glimpse of the larger church
with 30,000+ other Lutherans.
In order to raise funds for this experience, we are asking for your donations. On the bulletin board in
the welcome center you can find envelopes to make your contribution. You can make a
donation equal to (or more than) the amount written on the envelope. Place the envelope in the offering
plate or return it to Michelle Ketepa in the church office. When all of these envelopes are filled, we
will have raised all we need for the Gathering in July!
As of this publication, we still have at least 1/3 of our envelopes left—and most of those are in larger
donation amounts. Payment deadlines are fast approaching. Your help to offset the cost for our
students is greatly appreciated.
Make an investment in our youth today that will pay off as our youth grow in faith and
leadership!
Families with children ages 2-4 are invited to join us for special summer time Parent and
Tot Time activities. Group play, crafts, stories, songs, and snacks are all included in the
fun!
The sessions for summer will take place on the second Saturdays of the month:
June 13, July 11, and August 8
RSVP by contacting Michelle Ketepa in the church office or look for a list on the bulletin
board.
Suggested donation is $3 per child for the session. All supplies are included in the cost.
