St. Clair Home in Atlanta, Georgia
St. Clair Home in Atlanta, Georgia
The St. Clair’s live in a 1,700 square foot home that was built in 1925. They knew that
their home was uncomfortable and their energy bills were too high, but they weren’t sure
what to do about it.
A home energy assessment indicated
that they could lower their utility bills
through a complete home retrofit
package that included air sealing,
insulation, and an HVAC system
replacement.
The St. Clair Home in Atlanta, Georgia
Their Home Energy Makeover
COMPREHENSIVE HOME ASSESSMENT
Diagnostic equipment was used to conduct an initial home assessment. It was found that
air was leaking through the attic and basement. The duct work was tested with a duct
blaster to measure the amount of leakage. The makeover team determined what repairs
would have the greatest impact based on projected energy savings.
INSULATION & AIR SEALING
The insulation in the attic was in poor condition and there were many areas that were
not insulated at all. The existing insulation in the attic was removed in order to properly
air seal. Top plates, wire penetrations, and other openings were sealed and new foam
insulation was installed.
In the home’s crawlspace, the infiltration leaks were sealed, walls insulated, and the floor
was sealed with a vapor barrier lining.
HEATING & COOLING
The two existing HVAC units were removed and replaced with a new efficient system
provided by Amana.
A new duct system was installed and the ducts were sealed with Mastic.
A programmable thermostat that can be programmed, allowing for more energy savings,
was also installed.
ADDITIONAL UPGRADES

light bulbs and faucet aerators which will help save energy.
