2011 Business Trends
There are several projections and articles about the business trends for 2011. In
most of these articles businesses will continue through 2011 being conservative in
spending and hiring. They will do more with less. Although businesses are still
focused and watching the economy closely, they also are optimistic and are looking
at creative ways to promote their business.
Networking to build face-to-face relationships continues to be the cheaper option
of promoting themselves locally. Steve Strauss writer for USA TODAY discusses
in a January 3rd article that Facebook is where the action is right now. With this
being the hottest item, why not make a presence? Other things such as mobile
apps and discount websites such as Groupon and the Hot Deals Mount Airy News
are advertising are on the rise. People will be more mobile this year and are
searching businesses and services through smart phones.
To stay on top The Mount Airy Chamber is full swing into Facebook. You can find
us under Mount Airy Chamber. Our Connects Weekly email continues to promote
member events. We are now featuring Hot Deals, which are coupons you create,
and are listed on the website and our Facebook page. Hot Deal Coupons you
create are $10.00 for 3
months.
Businesses will search for and
tap into these low cost trends.
Networking continues to be
the most cost effective way to
promote your business. We
hope that strategic networking will continue to be a part
of your growth plan and invite
you to attend any of our
upcoming Chamber Events.

O2 Energies, Inc. – Located at 19510 Jetton Road,
Suite 300 Cornelius, NC 28031. Phone (704) 4909696 or visit www.o2energies.comm. O2 Energies,
Inc. was founded by Joel Olsen, Managing Director.
O2 Energies was founded to develop turn-key, ground
mounted solar power plants on the U.S. East coast. In
addition, O2 Energies provide consulting services for corporate clients wishing to grow their
business in the renewable energy market, and advocate for a state energy policy that promotes
renewable energy generation. O2 energies offers clients an in-depth understanding of solar
technology, state energy policy, project ownership and tax structuring. O2 Energies has developed
relationships with utility companies, public policy makers, regulators, and local government officials,
as well as with project investors and strategic partners to design, develop and deliver profitable
turnkey solar power plants to private investors.
O2 Energies has formed a strategic partnership with Pike Electric Inc. who has been branching out
into alternative energy systems in addition to its traditional focus on electricity. O2 Energies has
leased land adjacent to the waste water treatment plant located off of US highway 52 south from the
city of Mount Airy to build the first solar farm in our area. The initial construction for phase one is to
begin immediately with phase 2 and 3 to follow. By spring Mayberry Solar Farm should be up and
operating. The 1-megawatt facility will generate enough power to offset the consumption of 200
households. The city will have no funds invested in this project but will receive money from the lease
as well as extra property tax revenues generated by construction of the solar plant.
Mayberry Solar Farm will draw new interest to our community from those who have never seen a
solar farm and those who want to see how it is constructed. This allows us to show that we are
progressive and could be an extra tool for our business and economic development locally.

Getting to know…
Katie Cramer with Rogers Realty
It is a pleasure to have Katie Cramer part of the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of
Commerce. Both Katie and her husband Roger Cramer are Real Estate Brokers
with Rogers Realty, Inc. and are very active in the Greater Mount Airy Chamber
of Commerce. Her husband Roger will serve on the upcoming 2011 Chamber
Board of Directors. Katie feels involvement in the Chamber of Commerce and
our local community helps to expand one’s network, keeping one abreast of
what is happening in our area, and provides opportunities to give back to those
we serve.
Katie comes to Mount Airy in 2006 from Rhode Island after marrying Roger Cramer. Growing up she moved
around from New York to Connecticut, to Boston, then spending the last 34 years between Massachusetts and
Rhode Island. Katie has an impressive resume starting as a Human Resource Manager, Teacher with a Masters

love for all things related to housing helped lead her to her new career path. “I love helping others find their
dream home.” Katie said. “I believe to be a successful realtor/broker; one must listen thoroughly to client’s
needs and wishes. By being a good listener as well as being flexible, I can trust my instincts to explore options
a buyer may not have contemplated.” “A win-win situation is what I call a successful conclusion,…my client’s
smiles are worth a million words!” Katie feels a smooth transaction is part of acquiring the “perfect home” and
builds trust that can lead to referrals and continued relationships.
Katie is the 2011 President of the Surry County Board of Realtors. She served as the President Elect for 2010
and a Chairperson for 2009 & 2010. She was awarded the 2009 Realtor of the Year!

truly a unique experience being from the North to have complete strangers wave and speak as you pass
by.” Being a newcomer, Katie explains The Chamber provides an inviting atmosphere to meet and network with
business leaders in our area. “Relationships are what it is all about.” The Chamber does make a difference in
relationship building and promotion of our local businesses maximizing growth potential.

Chamber Surprise Patrol Visits
Sawyers & Sawyers Accounting Services
On Tuesday December 14, 2010 The Chamber Surprise Patrol
paid an unannounced visit to Sawyers & Sawyers Accounting
Services located at 813 South Main Street Mount Airy, NC
27030. Braving another winter day of frigid temperatures and
blustering winds The Chamber Surprise Patrol blew through
the front door at Sawyers & Sawyers Accounting Services with
a basket of candy, a box of cookies and two “wild” bunches of
balloons just to say “Thank You”.
Once inside and we got the door closed, we were greeted by
Carolyn Sawyers who looked somewhat surprised or maybe it
was all the wind and cold air that came in with us. We told her
that we were The Chamber Surprise Patrol and we were there
to say “Thank You” to Sawyers & Sawyers Accounting
Services for being a Chamber Member. Carolyn called for her
husband, Jerry who quickly came from an adjoining office to
see what was going on. Surprise Jerry…It’s the Chamber
Surprise Patrol. Here to say Thank You for being a Chamber
Member and for your continued support over the last sixteen
years! Sawyers & Sawyers Accounting Services has been a
Chamber Member since April 20, 1994.
We spent the next thirty minutes talking to Jerry and Carolyn
about the business, their family and friends that we had in
common. Sawyers & Sawyers is a small locally owned and
operated accounting office with three employees; Jerry and
Carolyn Sawyers and Meagan Castle. Several years ago Jerry
had needed some assistance and had called Surry Community
College for an accounting student. They referred Meagan
Castle to him and Meagan has been with Sawyers & Sawyers
since then.
Our visit to Sawyers & Sawyers Accounting Services was the
last Chamber Surprise Patrol visit of 2010. Jerry, Carolyn and
Meagan, thank you for taking time away from your business to
spend with us….we had a great time!

The announcement of the 2010 Citizen of the Year recipients was delivered by Dr. Frank Sells,
former President of Surry Community College. With the announcement of Ed Shelton and Charlie
Shelton as the 2010 Citizens of the Year, the crowd rose to a standing ovation. Dr. Sells noted the
monumental contributions, investments, political clout and vision has shaped and molded our
community like never before. The Shelton’s vision was the inspiration behind the local wine industry emergence in Surry County. We recognize and applaud their contributions, investments
and their leadership that has guided our region through the formative years of fostering and nurturing the Yadkin Valley Wine Region and Hospitality Region. The Shelton brothers rose from
their seats and came forward to receive their plaques and to say a few words.
Britta Needham, 2010 Chairmen of the Board delivered the charge to the 2011 Chamber Board of
