Navajo Birth Cohort Study
The Navajo Birth Cohort Study is a
project ordered by the U.S. Congress in 2010
addressing an important long standing issue
in Navajo life today: the effects of long-term
exposure to abandoned uranium mines on the
birth and development of Navajo children.
The NBCS provices an opportunity
to bring together community members,
researchers, tribal and federal programs, and
clinical health providers to learn from each
other and try to determine if there is any
relationship between exposures to uranium
waste, birth outcomes, and child development
in Navajo communities.
For more information about the Navajo
Birth Cohort Study, call the Women’s Clinic
at 928-283-2501.
TCRHCC Mobile Health Program
TCRHCC Community Health Center

February is American
Heart Health Month
You only have one heart. It’s precious. Understanding when there’s a problem with
your heart and how to take better care of your health overall, can help you live a longer,
more active life!
If a person’s heart beats an average of 80 beats per minute, it means that the heart beats
over three billion times by age 72. That’s a lot of beats. There are things you can do to
help your heart stay healthy and important information to know when there’s a problem.
For more information, call (928) 283-2501.
Some statistics:
• Fewer Americans have been dying of heart disease and stroke since the
1980s thanks to better medical therapies, and from lifestyle changes that are
lowering the risk.
• Cardiovascular diseases and events account for more deaths than any other
major cause in the U.S.
• An estimated 85 million people in the U.S. are living with cardiovascular
disease, including heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and chest pain.
Many don’t know the warning signs.
• About 32% of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure.
• The death rate from cardiovascular disease has decreased by nearly 29% in
the decade between 2003 and 2013.
• Every 80 seconds, one woman is killed by heart disease and stroke. That’s one
in three deaths among women each year. These statistics can be shocking,
but 80% of these deaths can be prevented with education and action.
Page 4
American
Heart Month
President Lyndon B. Johnson declared
the first American Heart Month in 1964. Ever
since then, the month of February has been
dedicated to cardiovascular health. In his
declaration to kick off the annual awareness
campaign last year, President Obama wrote,
“My Administration is committed to leading
a new era of medicine — one that delivers
the right treatment at the right time — and
to ensuring Americans live longer, healthier,
more productive lives.”
The American Heart Association is
devoted to saving people from heart disease
and stroke – the two leading causes of
death in the world. It teams with millions
of volunteers to fund innovative research,
fight for stronger public health policies, and
provide lifesaving tools and information to
prevent and treat these diseases.

Teen Dating Violence
Awareness Month
Are You in a Violent or Abusive Dating Relationship?
February is Teen Dating
Violence (DV) Awareness Month
-- a national effort to raise
awareness about abuse in teen and
20-something relationships and
promote programs that prevent it.
Let’s say you meet someone
and think they are wonderful,...
then something happens out of
nowhere, and you get this feeling
that something isn’t right! Then
your partner may become outright
demanding or abusive. Often
friends and family pick up on it
before you do. You may have
unknowingly wandered into an
abusive or violent relationship.
You may even try to defend your
partner’s behavior for a while.
Dating Violence is defined as the
physical, sexual, psychological,
or emotional violence within a
dating relationship, including
stalking. It can occur in person
or via computer, telephone or
text, and might occur between
a current or former dating
partner. Several different terms
are used to describe teen dating
violence – such as relationship
abuse, intimate partner violence,
relationship violence, and dating
abuse. This can happen to anyone,
regardless of age, race, gender,
sexual orientation or background.
Drugs and alcohol can affect a
person’s judgment, but they do
not excuse abuse or violence!
Dating violence or abuse is a
pattern of destructive behaviors
used to exert power and control
over a dating partner. While
defined as a pattern, that doesn’t
mean the first instance of abuse
is not dating violence. It just
recognizes that dating violence
usually involves a series of
abusive behaviors over a course
of time. It is more common
than many people think. It is
widespread with serious longterm and short-term effects.
Many teens do not report
dating abuse or violence because
they are afraid to tell friends and
family. One in three teens in the
U.S. will experience physical,
sexual or emotional abuse by
someone they are in a relationship
with before they become adults.
A
2013
survey
found
approximately 10% of high
school students reported physical
victimization and 10% reported
sexual victimization from a dating
partner in the 12 months just prior
to the survey.
A 2011 nationwide survey
by the U.S. Centers for Disease
Page 6
Control (CDC) found that 23%
of females and 14% of males
who experienced rape, physical
violence, or stalking by an
intimate partner, first experienced
some form of partner violence
between 11 and 17 years of age.
Continue on page 7.
Dating violence can be:
Physical: hitting, slapping, choking, kicking, etc.
Emotional/Verbal: putting you down; embarrassing you in
public (offline or on); threatening you in any way; telling you
what to do or wear; extreme jealousy or possessiveness,
explosive temper, or isolating you from family and friends.
Sexual: pressuring or forcing you to do anything sexual
you don’t want to do (rape), including sexting; restricting
access to birth control.
Financial: taking your paycheck; preventing you from
working.
Digital: sending threats via text, social media or email;
stalking or humiliating you on social media; logging in to
your email or social media accounts without permission;
forcing you to share passwords.
