President’s Message: Marketing Our Region
by Russ Denver, President, ACCGS
ecently, the national ABC morning
show, Good Morning America,
stopped at Union Station in
Springfield as part of a nationwide
whistle-stop tour to get the pulse of the
country.
During ABC’s stop, local people were
interviewed and Springfield’s own
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of
Fame was highlighted as our region’s
trademark attraction through a “hoop
shooting” contest between news anchors.
The Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of
Greater Springfield, Inc. (ACCGS) notified our members about the whistle-stop
tour and a good number attended the
event. These members all expressed pride
for Springfield’s inclusion within this
tour. However, other members have
questioned the
Chamber’s involvement in regards to
the marketing of
the tour, and the
value of marketing
the region.
The ACCGS is
Russ Denver
affiliated with a
number of business groups with a long
history of marketing our region. Among
these, is the Economic Development
Council of Western Massachusetts
(EDC), and the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors’ Bureau (GSCVB).
More recently, the Springfield Chamber
of Commerce has been involved in an ad

Companies were nominated in two categories: total revenue and revenue
growth. Companies eligible for the program must be independent, privatelyowned businesses, be based in either
Hampden or Hampshire counties or be a
member of ACCGS, be in business for at
least three full years and produce revenues of at least $1 million in the last fiscal year.
This year’s revenue winners combined
for close to 1 billion dollars in the past
fiscal year (2007) with average revenue
for all participants exceeding $19 million

campaign to specifically market Springfield. Additionally, the West of the River
Chamber of Commerce (the Agawam
Chamber of Commerce and the West
Springfield Chamber of Commerce)
began a campaign reflecting the vital
importance of commerce within the town
of Agawam. This effort began nearly one
month ago and focuses on the taxes,
charitable contributions and quality jobs,
all provided by the Agawam business
community.
Strategic Regional Marketing
This year alone, the EDC will invest
more than $250,000 in strategic regional
marketing campaigns including both
national and international tradeshow
attendance, in order to showcase the
development sites and target industry
clusters of Western Massachusetts. A
large portion of the EDC’s marketing
efforts are dedicated to the attraction of
corporate real estate site selectors. Not

WHAT I LIKE
WHAT I DO:
MOST ABOUT
Every day in our shop is different.
No two orders are the same, so the
work flow keeps us thinking and
engaged. We always have to be
quick and agile to handle rush jobs.
It’s a challenge, but that’s what motivates me.
WHEN AND WHY I
CHAMBER:
JOINED THE
Minuteman Press joined the
ACCGS in December, 2006. Our
goal was to become more involved
in the greater Springfield business
community and develop strong relationships with other professionals.
WHY I
SUPPORT THE
ACCGS:
The ACCGS provides valuable
networking opportunities for businesses of all sizes. The staff also
keeps us informed of legislative and
economic issues that relate to the
business community. The ACCGS is
a great resource.
She
comes to
the
ACCGS
from
Baystate
Health,
where she
was the
Executive
Assistant
to Steven
Bradley, Vice President of Government and Community Relations. She
joined Baystate in April of 2003,
working in Strategic Planning for
one year before she was promoted to
Executive Assistant for Government
and Community Relations. While
there, she was responsible for project
management, including coordination
of people and resources for timely
and successful completion of assignments, research and data compilation as assigned, problem resolution,
development of the department’s
work plan schedule and project
implementation plan. In this role,
she also created positive working
relationships with State, Federal, and
Local Legislators, as well as Springfield City and other municipal officials, community and neighborhood
representatives and other relevant
civic associations and organizations,
media professionals and internal colleagues.
A 2008 graduate of the ACCGS
Leadership Institute, she will continue her education by returning to
school in the Winter to complete her
Bachelor’s degree.
In her new position, Corriveau
will be heavily involved with Affiliate Board and Committee meetings,
facilitate affiliate events for Agawam
and West Springfield, and support
and recruit members of the Chamber, as well as working closely with
the media to highlight the activities
and accomplishments of the Chamber. She can be reached at 755-1309
or by e-mail at [email protected].

T
he state legislature is in
their informal session where
few bills of real importance
are passed. One bill of great
interest to the area and specifically to Springfield, is a bill that
would not only extend the loan
repayment schedule that Springfield has with the Commonwealth, but would also put into
place some better management
tools that would allow for a
smooth transition for the
Finance Control Board to depart
in June. There are many elements to this piece of legislation
and the Springfield Chamber is
pushing hard to see it enacted.
Actually, many of the other
Affiliated Chambers are helping
with this effort, believing that
“as Springfield goes, so goes the
valley”.
One another note, as of this
writing 45 members of the
Chamber are hearing first hand
from Congressman Richard Neal
and a great line up of speakers
put together by him, on the
important issues of the day in
Washington. This two-day trip
to our nation’s Capital sold out
quickly and shows the respect
the Congressman’s constituents
have for his efforts in Washington. More will be reported on
this trip later.
Chamber Opposes
Question 1
With the November ballot just
a few weeks away, some of the
Chamber’s efforts are being
made in opposing Question 1 on
the ballot, a binding initiative to
repeal the state’s Personal
LEGISLATIVE
update
Income Tax. While proponents of
this question portray it as a way to
force government to get slimmer and
put money back into everyone’s
pockets, the Chamber, through its
study of the facts surrounding the
imitative, has taken a position in
opposition to this question.
Simply put, the passage of this initiative would culminate in the loss of
$12 billion of revenues for the state.
Last year (FY 2008) the state collected $22 billion in revenues. Compared to the state’s budget of roughly $32 billion which is also made up
of federal dollars, the resulting
decrease in funds would be 40%.
The Chamber feels that this size
reduction in revenues would bring
about draconian cuts in government
services; services that we all depend
upon for safe roads, safe cities and
towns, quality education from
kindergarten through college, job
training programs, and health care.
An instant casualty would be the
state’s bond rating. It would surely
be lowered meaning the state would
be paying higher rates of interest.
The Chamber has long-stated that
for a first class quality of life in
which to raise a family, and for a
business climate that allows our
member companies to be competitive, we must have adequate funding
for education, health care, job training, infrastructure, and aid to cities
and towns to name just a few things.
The cuts to these efforts that would

The Chamber has long realized
that reforms are needed to some
areas of funding in the state’s
budget and will continue to work
hard on having its message heard.
Reforms to pension systems,
health care plans at the state and
local levels, and turnpike and
MBTA issues all must take place.
However, Question 1 is not the
answer to the need for these
reforms. These reforms will be a
priority of the Chamber going
forward and will be pressed for
through the legislative process.
On Question 1, the Chamber is
opposed.

result from the passage of Question 1 and the loss of 40% of the
state’s budget, would move us in
the opposite direction of what is
needed. Such a dramatic decrease
in revenues would not be beneficial for Massachusetts in the short

meaningful improvement in the
overall tax structure. That is why
the Chamber has taken a position
of opposing Question 1.

President’s Message: Marketing Our Region
Continued from page one
region’s assets in order to consider
us as a location for future expansion, but they are also seeking
extensive information about the
region’s workforce, wage rates,
business costs and other demographics. By crafting and providing this information themselves,
the EDC is able to highlight the
region’s most attractive assets and
gain a vital advantage over rival
regions.
Marketing Tourism
The GSCVB is the most important
driver of regional marketing in the
conventions and tourism niche.
Through ongoing marketing efforts
and campaigns encompassing a variety of media, such as FAM tours for
tour operators who bring busloads
of tourists to our region, the GSCVB
targets the recreational traveler by
highlighting our region’s famed
attractions including the Big E, Six
Flags New England, Bright Nights
and the Dr. Seuss Memorial.
So, does marketing work in
attracting new business and travelers
to our region? Yes! The year-long
efforts of the GSCVB and our business affiliates result in thousands of
annual tourists and hundreds of
companies considering our region
for their next location. This adds
thousands of dollars to our local
economy through employment
opportunities and ancillary businesses.
Because of the nature of marketing, these efforts are designed to be
seen best from outside of Western
Massachusetts. Without the constant
regional promoting done by these
organizations, much less would be
accomplished and most likely,
many people would be advocating
for the creation of groups such as
the EDC, the GSCVB and the
Chamber. Fortunately, the business
leaders who choose to serve on the
Board of Directors of these organizations see the value of marketing
our region as important as their
promoting of their own businesses.

Hampden Bank News
For the fourth consecutive year,
Hampden Bank is offering its mortgage customers the opportunity to
participate in its Energy Relief Program — the program is designed to
give customers the option to make
smaller “interest only” payments on
their mortgages for the duration of
the heating season. Hampden Bank’s
program is simple, but the savings
can be profound. For example, a
$150,000.00 loan balance with a 20year remaining term at an average
6.5% interest rate would yield a savings of almost $250 per month.
After the heating season ends in
April, the borrower’s loan would be
“recast” to amortize the new loan
balance. In the example above the
recast payment would increase the
monthly payment on the loan by
about $14.00 per month.
