A Logical Choice
for Repower
Mercury is dedicated to keeping boaters on
the water with engines that run reliably, year after year. More than 45,000 boats on the water
today are powered by Mercury or Quicksilver
Remanufactured engines. Mercury supports
these products with a factory backed limited
warranty. “With a quality brand and great coverage, Mercury and Quicksilver Remanufactured
engines are the only logical choice for repowering,” said Mike Horak, Mercury Powertrain category director.
Quicksilver Remanufacturing offers quality
Pro-Series longblocks and transmissions for
all makes of sterndrive and inboard applications. For 2- and 4-stroke Mercury produced
outboards, remanufactured powerheads are
available.
Mercury Remanufacturing offers fully
dressed, drop-in Plus Series engines. Plus Series are remanufactured MerCruiser engines
that are updated to improve performance, save
money and deliver better fuel economy. Mercury Remanufacturing also offers used Mercury
Outboards and MerCruiser engines through a
factory certified pre-owned program.
Mercury uses only marine parts
Many parts used by rebuilders simply can’t
hold up to the demands of a marine engine because many use automotive parts.
“Automotive parts were never meant for a
marine environment. Mercury and Quicksilver Remanufacturing use only
marine-proven parts in
engines.

thoroughly inspect all
cores. Each remanufactured engine is disassembled, processed to
remove debris, hot pressure washed and re-inspected. Any damaged
parts are scrapped. They
are never welded or repaired.

“Mercury Remanufacturing literally wrote the

Quicksilver Repower Guide is available to service technicians to properly train on root-cause
diagnosis, application, and service specifications.”
The Quicksilver Repower Guide offers technicians guidance for completing high-quality
installations to ensure every engine passes

warranty on all Quicksilver Manufacturing ProSeries longblocks sold in the U.S at no charge,”
said Horak. “Just attach the Predelivery inspection report to the invoice for coverage. No additional steps are required.”
For 2014, Mercury Remanufacturing offers
free 1+2 coverage on most Plus Series engine models sold in the U.S. That’s one year
of standard limited warranty, plus two years of
coverage with Mercury Product Protection at
no charge with registration of the product and
program materials.
The 357 & 8.1L Horizon Plus Series inboard
engines come with a standard 3-year limited warranty that begins when the product
is registered.
The delivery
When a boat breaks down during boating
season, delivery time for a replacement engine
is critical. With more than a dozen warehouses
in the U.S., Mercury Marine’s nationwide distribution network can deliver quickly. “Our distribution partners, Land ‘N’ Sea, Diversified Marine Products, and Kellogg Marine Supply, offer
same-day delivery on many routes,” said Horak.
“And help is just a call away by calling Mercury,
or the Engine Power Center specialists.”
Why buy from the aftermarket?
“When it comes to replacing part of your
marine engine, or repowering your boat, there
are really only two options available: genuine
Mercury engines and Quicksilver components
– or aftermarket,” said Horak. “For 75 years,
Mercury has stood for reliability and durability.
“The old adage ‘You get what you pay for’ still
proves true today,” Horak said. “What may appear to be up-front savings may cost you more
in future repairs.”
When to repower
MerCruiser 383 Inboard
It is the name you can trust in recreational marine power.”
Mercury’s products are designed and built to
rigid specifications, and are made to last. All of
the parts and components are made to work
together – whether for new engines or for remanufactured products.
“For example, we refuse to offer short blocks,
or engines without tinware because it prevents
oil leaks from fit issues, and improves durability
by protecting the engine internals form dirt and
debris,” Horak said. “Coverage provided by the
aftermarket may not be what is expected.”
Returning product to the factory for repairs,
declining warranties, payments required for
additional warranty to third parties, and other
tricks are found throughout the aftermarket.
This creates hassle, and ultimately takes the fun
out of boating.
Educate customers to start thinking about
repower after the boating season when their
marine engine begins to show subtle signs of
aging, like a longer cranking time at start-up or
performance that’s not quite what it was when
the boat was new. Sometimes, a more serious
problem has developed, such as a plugged water intake which can cause the engine to overheat, striking a submerged object creating serious damage, or an unexpected freeze resulting
in a cracked block. Pro-Series longblocks from
Quicksilver Remanufacturing are perfect for
freeze damage repairs.
“Obviously, if the current engine fails during
the season boaters want to get back on the water as quickly as possible,” said Horak. “Their
options may be limited because during peak
season the service bays are busy.”
Limit the choices to what is available and
what can be serviced rapidly without losing
valuable boating time and maintain shop efficiency. Doing anything else can cost a repair
shop money, while boater’s loose value in the
service provided if the work takes too long.
Mercury Remanufacturing’s Plus Series engines can be installed in as little as a single day,
so these are the natural choices for repower in
any season.
Ideally, boaters should consider repowering
during the off season before a catastrophic in-
cident. Encourage customers to do their homework in advance when bringing boats in for
service. “Working together with your customer
provides the opportunity to find the right product at the best price, and not lose valuable time
on the water,” said Horak.
Working with the customer
Choosing an engine is best done in partnership with the customer the shop will be working with to perform their installation. However,
the best way to educate customers is to have in
mind a price range and a list of benefits that a
repower will provide.
“Also be sure to get some information about
the boat and how it is used,” said Horak. “This
will help provide a platform for you to work with
your customer. Be sure to ask the customer
about any peculiar issues with their boat (noises, loose or stiff handling, difficult controls, etc.)
as you may be able to eliminate these issues
to build greater value to the repower provided.”
One of the best values for the dollar that
customers are seeking is adequate product assurance or warranty coverage. “Brand strength
and the three years of factory backed coverage
for most products is why Mercury and Quicksilver Remanufacturing stand as the only logical
choice for repower,” Horak said.
