HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT 2013
The Steinhoff Maties Hockey club once again enjoyed a very successful year. A number of management
changes within the club brought about change and a fresh approach to administration, financial management
and coaching. The success of the revamped High Performance Program was reflected in the club results, not
only with regards to team performances but also individual achievements.
The club had the opportunity to host a number of visiting oversees club teams at the start of the year. These
teams enjoyed the beautiful Stellenbosch setting, challenging hockey and friendly hospitality on offer at the club.
A total of 12 such club matches were hosted by Maties, all three clubs (Pucara, Newman and Santa Barbara)
reigned from clubs in Argentina.
Steinhoff as a sponsor enjoyed maximum benefit from their investment, with the club’s ever growing and
extremely popular Koshuis section. The Koshuis section included the highly competitive Summer League to
start the season. 52 teams competed for the two titles. Winter league, had 63 teams participating in 4 men and
4 women’s leagues. Steinhoff Maties Medies and were crowned Ladies Super league Champions and Steinhoff
Helshoogte were the men’s Super League Champions. The club also hosted three successful pre-season
tournaments during March.

The 31 Maties Hockey Camp hosted 38 Teams from all over South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The
logistic of the camp were hampered by the Universities decision to not allow access to residences during the
camp time. A new approach to the camp will have to be explored to overcome this problem and maintain the
quality of the camp. The hockey camp was a great success, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the club members
who assisted with coaching and organisation.
The Steinhoff Maties teams acquitted themselves very well in the various WP leagues this year. The success of
the revamped High Performance Program was reflected in the club results, not only with regards to team
performances but also individual achievements. 5 of the 10 teams competing in the WP league, ended in the
top 3 in their respective leagues and 3 teams winning their respective leagues, the highlight being the men and

ladies 1 team taking Grand Challenge League honours.
7 Players represented SA at a senior level, 11 Maties represented the national u21 teams and 18 senior and 39,
u21 provincial players represented Western Province during the season.

This year has once again been an excellent year for the players and staff of the Maties Hockey Club.

STEINHOFF
Maties Hockey and Steinhoff continued with their successful partnership in 2013 for the seventh
consecutive year. Thank you to Steinhoff and all involved for your continued support throughout Matie
Sport.

SUMMER LEAGUE
The tournament produced hockey of a high standard, in both the men’s and ladies section. It was also a
platform to showcase new, talented hockey players joining Maties as first years. In the Men’s division
Steinhoff Simonsberg had no trouble booking their spot in the final alongside Steinhoff Eendrag. The
Ladies final was contested between Steinhoff Aristea and Bloemhof Old girls. The Men’s winners were
Steinhoff Simonsberg and the Ladies winners were Bloemhof Old girls.

FIELD HOCKEY
10 Steinhoff Maties teams represented the University in the Western Province leagues this year.
The Steinhoff Matie Ladies performed well once again this season, winning all of their league games –

truly a record to be proud of. The Steinhoff Matie Ladies 1 XI retained their LGC title and also won the
inaugural, televised Varsity Cup earlier in the year.
Steinhoff Maties Men had a great season, finishing the season unbeaten, only drawing 3 games on their
way to the league title.
The grand Challenge double was last achieved in 2009, congratulations to both teams and coaches.

HOCKEY CAMP (31 March – 4 April 2013)

The 2013 Hockey Camp was the 31 Camp since Jackie Wiese introduced the first camp in 1982. These
Hockey Camps are not only a fantastic way to develop and support the up-and-coming youth of today but
an ideal opportunity to market the Matie brand and encouraging future students to choose Maties as their
preferred University. The Maties Hockey Camp continues to serve a s a platform to develop school
umpires and coaches.

MATIES HOCKEY INSTITUTE
Scharlize Crafford managed the Maties Hockey Institute for the duration of 2013. This year saw the
continuation of the courses presented as well as new projects being introduced. Over 900 coaches,
players and umpires participated in the MHI program this year. Credit to Scharlize and the club members
and staff who assisted with the presentation of these courses.

Bennett, first year as the club assistant, has brought on a new dynamic. Her excellent
administration and coaching skills has played a large role in the success of the club.

Lorinda has assisted with the financial and clubhouse management this year. Her hard work is

Miss Scharlize Crafford
Scharlize has ensured the Maties Hockey Institute has continued to develop players, coaches
and umpires in the Western Province. Again the hockey institute is at the forefront of hockey
development in the Western province

Mr Kurt Cerfontyne
Kurt’s renewed energy into the men’s high performance program reaped the rewards he
deserves. A USSA silver medal and the Grand Challenge trophy is a true reflection of his hard
work and commitment to the team


A LAST WORD
2013 has been another successful year in all aspects for Maties, the game of hockey, Club
management and social interaction within the club. Some individual successes which must be

mentioned that have contributed to making 2013 so memorable are; The 31 Maties Hockey
Camp, the ladies winning the inaugural Varsity Cup, both Maties First Teams winning their
respective GC league titles and the club seeing many members being selected for Provincial
and National squads and competing in International tournaments.
There are many aspects which need to all be in sync for everything to run smoothly within the
Maties Hockey Club. Yet, 2013 has shown just how possible this is and we thank each and
every individual involved in adding their contribution, support and hard work during this year.
Nothing great can ever be achieved without hard work – we have seen the results, so let us
keep working hard!
Club members are amongst the most integral contributors to the club and we thank each one of
them for giving their all throughout the long season, playing with pride for Maties and continuing
to support the Club in all functions and duties. Here’s to hoping that the Club can continue to
build on the bonds formed and forged throughout this 2013 season for next year and that club
members remain ever enthusiastic and passionate for the game and the name of Maties.
To all members moving on to their next phase of life, we wish them all the best of luck and hope
that they know that they shall be missed but will always be welcome back into the Club as well
as that they will always be a Matie at heart.

PRE-USSA VOORBEREIDING
Die pre-USSA oefeninge was goed beplan en het goed verloop. Dit het oor ‘n 1 week tydperk voor die
toernooi gestrek. Die spelers het veral die spanbou sessie en visie sessies geniet.

VERVOER
Sommige spelers het hul eie vervoer na Kaapstad gereël. Vier US kombi’s en twee US motors is gebruik
om die spelers en spanbestuur tydens die toernooi te vervoer.
4.
VERBLYF
Die dames het in die Regency Apartments tuisgegaan en die mans in die Savoy Lodge Gastehuis. Die
gastehuise was baie gerieflik en badkamers voldoende.

ETES
Daar was R60.00 per persoon per dag begroot vir middagete en R100 per persoon per dag vir aandete.
Ontbyt is by die gastehuis aangebied. Die daaglikse begroting was voldoende en die reëlings vir die
maaltye het vlot verloop.

Die MATIES Hokkieklub het R 9 850.64 tot die span en -bestuur se onkostes bygedra. Die totale onkoste
vir die toernooi het R 125 082.22 beloop.

MATIES HOCKEY CAMP 2013
WARM UP PROGRAMME
The warm - up program was 25 minutes in duration which included the dynamic warm up.
STICKWORK STATIONS
The training drills presented this year were revamped from the 2012 version while a high performance stick
work group was also added to the course program. Schools were requested to nominate players for the high
performance group whose sessions were conducted on the A turf under the guidance of four hp coaches. The
u18 and u16 stick work groups once again followed separate programs. The stick work sessions were divided
into five main categories:





Passing Skills
Receiving Skills
Elimination Skills
Defending Skills
Goal scoring
SET PIECES AND TEAM BUILDING
This section of the program included attacking and defensive penalty corners, set plays, mini – games, team
building activities as well as sports nutrition talks.
GOALKEEPERS
Jacques Le Roux headed up the goalkeeper camp and was instrumental along with Jenny King in incorporating
a vision session for the goalkeepers which was conducted by Grant Van Velden and his assistants which the
participants thoroughly enjoyed. This was a highly successful program, which ensured the growth and
development of the goalkeepers attending the camp.
COACHES COACHING COURSE
The coaches’ course again received exceptionally positive reviews. Themes discussed included:
 Tactical aspects
 Rules and umpiring
 Didactics
 Sport Science
 Nutrition
 High Performance
Presentations were made by Jenny King, Kurt Cerfontyne, Karin Hugo, Sean Surmon, Vossie Dirkse van
Schalkwyk and Grant Van Velden.

The evening program remained unchanged.

TOURNAMENT MATCHES
The tournament was held each afternoon, and run on a round robin basis, ending with a winner in each section.
UMPIRING
A successful 4 day umpires’ course was also conducted for the first time by Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk which
was attended by a group of educators. Each umpire receiving an individual feedback form with their Grading
and were given recommendations for further provincial advancement. My thanks are extended to Vossie Dirkse
van Schalkwyk who headed up this section of the camp. We were able to coach and grade those students
interested in umpiring. Thanks are also extended to her fellow graders.
GENERAL
My thanks are extended to Jacques Le Roux (GK), and Jenny King who helped with the design and
management of the course program during the week.
To all the coaches, administration staff, club committee, Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk, Lorinda Koen and Adene
Bennett, thank you for making the camp the success it was.

MATIES HOCKEY INSTITUTE 2013
Maties Hockey Institute
The yearly courses and coaching clinics have grown in strength and numbers and we continue to
provide an excellent service whereby we enhance the standard of coaching and umpiring as well as
the players’ skills and knowledge of the game.
The Institute ran SAHA umpire and coach accreditation courses which were well attended. With the
expert coaches and outstanding facilities that we are fortunate to have here at Maties, The weekly
Junior Maties training sessions throughout the second and third term as well as the holiday camps
continue to be well supported. The institute also arranged a Mini Hockey Umpires course during
February and looking forward to hosting it again next year.
The below table outlines the various courses that have run throughout the year. The institute is
running a Junior Maties Summer League in the Fourth Term and we look forward to a good turn-out
to this tournament. This institute is also looking to start an indoor hockey tournament during the
Fourth term.

Inleiding
Die 2013 Steinhoff Koshuishokkie seisoen was ‘n uiters suksesvolle een. Die wedstryde was hard en
die kompetisie straf, maar die wedstryde het in goeie gees plaasgevind. Ek wil eerstens graag vir
Vossie Dirkse van Schalkwyk bedank vir haar toewyding en harde werk dwarsdeur die seisoen. As dit
nie vir haar was nie, sou die wedstyde nie kon plaasvind nie. Baie dankie ook aan Maties Hokkieklub
dat al die Superliga wedstryde op die onderskeie Astro bane kon plaasvind.
‘n Groot dankie aan Steinhoff vir die borgskap van Maties Hokkieklub, wat ook deur filter na die
Koshuishokkie en die deurlopende ondersteuning en belangstelling wat Steinhoff toon in al die
Koshuishokkie aktiwiteite.
Toernooie
Die 2013 seisoen het afgeskop met die gebruiklike 3 onderskeie toernooie op 3 opeenvolgende
Saterdae in die eerste kwartaal. Die toernooie was die Eerstejaarstoernooi, Interkoshuistoernooi en
die Karanavaltoernooi.
Dankie aan die komiteelede wat gehelp het met die organisasie van die toernooie asook aan al die
skeidsregters wat die wedstryde geblaas het.
Die toernooie was ‘n positiewe afskop vir die seisoen. Dit het vir spanne die geleentheid geskep om
mekaar te leer ken en om bekend te raak met die Koshuishokkie kultuur. Hierdie toernooie help om ’n
goeie gees te kweek binne die koshuisliga en gee die spelers die kans om deel te hê hieraan.

Somerliga is elke jaar n groot toernooi met sterk kompetisie en wedstryde van goeie gehalte wat
saans onder die spreiligte op die astro plaasvind. 2013 was geen uitsondering nie. Klubspelers mag
ook in hierdie toernooi speel vir hulle onderskeie koshuise. Dit sorg natuurlik vir uitstaaande gehalte
hokkie en verskaf ook net verdere rede vir die koshuise om hul onderskeie koshuise te ondersteun en
geesdriftige toeskouers te verseker.

Die formaat van die liga het bestaan uit 4 ligas vir beide mans en dames. LSL, LCL, L2, L3, MSL,
MCL, M2 en M3. Elke liga het 8 spanne bevat behalwe die Mans 3de liga wat bestaan het uit 6
spanne. Die M3 was ‘n nuwe liga, laasjaar was daar slegs tot by M2 spanne gewees. Die L3 het
bestaan uit 9 spanne. Nadat die rondomtalie wedstryde gespeel is, is die ligas in die top 4 en
onderste 4 verdeel. Binne-in hierdie verdeling, het die spanne dan in elke liga semi finale gespeel om
te sien wie dan in die finaal speel om sodoende die finale posisies van die spanne in elke liga te
bepaal.

Altwee die Superligas se wedstryde het weereens hierdie jaar op Astro plaasgevind – waarvoor ons
baie dankbaar is en ons wil net baie dankie sê daarvoor. Die Superligas se wedstryde is deur
klubspelers geblaas. Die gras wedstryde se verteenwoordigers moes self sorg vir ‘n skeidsregter vir
hulle wedstryde. Hierdie wedstryde het op die grasvelde by Welgevallen of op die Coetzenburg velde
plaasgevind. Die onderskeie ligas het gesorg vir spannende en baie vermaaklike wedstryde.
Uitslae:
Hierdie jaar was die aantal spanne vir mans en dames baie nader as gewoonlik. Daar het 33 dames
spanne deelgeneem en 30 mansspanne.

Top 4 Toernooi
Hierdie toernooi is ‘n toernooi wat jaarliks gespeel word deur die top 4 spanne van elke liga. Daar is
egter in die verlede probleem ondervind met die deelname aan hierdie toernooi weens toetse. Die
voortbestaan van hierdie toernooi word in heroorweging geplaas.
Skeidsregters
Hierdie jaar is die Superligas se wedstryde deur klubspelers waargeneem, maar weens die
onbetroubaarheid van die klubspelers deurdat hulle nie opdaag vir hul wedstryde nie, is daar besluit
om ‘n alternatiewe oplossing te soek hiervoor. Die sisteem sal volgende jaar verander. Elke koshuis
sal ‘n skeidsregter aanstel en die persoon sal die nodige opleiding ontvang en sal dan ingedeel word
om wedstryde te blaas deur die seisoen. Ons hoop hierdie verandering sal die huidige probleem
oplos.
Ek wil net weer van die geleentheid gebruik maak om vir Vossie dankie te sê vir die skeidsregter
eksamens wat sy aanbied vir die koshuis verteenwoordigers sodat die ander ligas bekwame
skeidsregters kan hê. Verder ook net baie dankie aan die klubspelers wat wel hulle tyd opgeoffer het
om die Superliga se wedstryde te blaas. Ons waardeer dit regtig baie.

Finansies
Die klub word hoofsaaklik gefinansier deur Affiliasie en Registrasiefooie. Baie dankie aan die
verteenwoordigers wat seker gemaak het dat die vorms ingevul word en ingegee word. Sonder dit sal
die koshuishokkie nie kan funksioneer nie.
Boetes maak ook ‘n deel uit van die inkomste. Hoewel dit ‘n goeie bydrae is tot ons finansiële
welstand wil ons die koshuise aanmoedig om dit so laag as moontlik te hou. Baie dankie ook vir die
spanne en verteenwoordigers wat die reëls so mooi nakom en dinge reg doen, dit word weerspieël in
die boetes.
Samevatting
2013 was ‘n baie suksesvolle jaar vir Koshuishokkie. Baie dankie aan Vossie, elke komiteelid en ook
elke koshuisverteenwoordiger dat julle bygedra het tot nog ‘n gesonde jaar van Koshuishokkie.
Dankie ook vir die spelers wat elke wedstryd in goeie gees gespeel het; sonder julle en julle liefde vir
die sport is die klub niks. Ons hoop ons kan jaarliks groei en dat volgende jaar selfs n beter jaar sal
wees en dat die veranderinge wat saam met die jaar kom, tot beter wedstryde sal lei.
