FIRST STAGES
The first stage reduces high-pressure air from the tank to a consistent intermediate pressure. This
stage is generally of the PISTON or DIAPHRAGM type, depending on the mechanism used to control
the valve that lets air flow to the second stage. Due to different design and advantages, each type
has become the favorite of different groups in the diving community.
First stages are available in both INT and DIN versions. INT (from ‘international,’ also referred to as
‘yoke’) and DIN refer to the type of tank valve and first stage connection. DIN first stages are used all
over the world, especially in Europe, and often the preference for technical divers. A travel adapter is
available to transform DIN first stages for use on INT tank valves.

Balanced-piston first stages are the first choice of demanding deep sport divers and professionals.
First stages with air balanced pistons deliver significantly more air to the second stage than any
other first stage, while their performance is totally unaffected by changing tank pressure and depth.
A balanced piston allows the use of lighter and more sensitive components, resulting in an ultra-fast
breathing response, instant delivery of air on demand and extra-high air flow especially in low tank
pressure ranges.

Diaphragm-based first stages are more complex and have more moving parts than piston first
stages. With a dry chamber, they have an environmentally sealed design so that water cannot enter
the inner mechanism. Diaphragm first stages have been the favored choice of cold-water divers
because of their better resistance to freezing. Diaphragm first stages are also recommended for
those working in water containing a high degree of suspended particles, silt, or other contaminating
materials. All our diaphragm first stages feature balanced technology and are packed with original
features that deliver fast flow to the second stage upon demand and good overall performance.

The classic downstream valve is the first choice of resorts and rental facilities worldwide for warm
and moderate water temperatures. This is the best example of bulletproof reliability and trouble-free,
minimal maintenance regulators. A classic downstream piston does not compensate for the minor
changes in pressure delivered to the second stage as tank air is consumed, but still guarantees solid
performance.

Computers have taken man to the moon and now they
take divers to underwater depths. But like with any
adventure, one must be able to measure and calculate
various elements, ensuring safety and optimizing
pleasure. Uwatec, founded in a country known for their
precision watch manufacturing expertise, Switzerland,
led diving into the silicon age. It was with the
revolutionary Aladin computer, launched in the 1980’s,
that diver’s expectations rocketed. Uwatec engineering
is now integrated into the SCUBAPRO brand, offering
unparalleled reliability in robust, innovative diving
computers and instruments. And these standards are
applied in every component: algorithm, processor,
circuitry, display, exterior case design, hardware &
software, plus dive mode options: nitrox, apnea, tri-mix
and incorporation of the heart rate in decompression
calculations. Our products are engineered by divers,
designing computers as if they had no limits, maximizing
innovation.

An enhanced ZHL8 ADT MB algorithm reduces the formation of micro-bubbles, making diving
safer. By choosing a MB level between L0 and L5, you adjust the algorithm conservativeness,
allowing you to either take up less nitrogen or off-gas more quickly.
The Predictive Multi-Gas (PMG) lets you enjoy the full benefits of carrying high oxygen
concentration mixes in addition to your main breathing gas. The computer calculates the
decompression schedule for all possible gas combinations and in case you don’t switch to the
new mix, it adapts the calculation accordingly. It is associated with a complete dive planner on
Galileo and Meridian. Optional on Galileo Luna.
PDIS optimizes your dive in complete security for a safer and more pleasurable adventure. The
PDIS (Profile Dependent Intermediate Stops) option calculates an intermediate stop based
on how much nitrogen uptake your body has endured, taking into account your current dive,
previous dives and breathing mixes. PDIS is a unique scientific application for safer, more
optimized decompression.
All SCUBAPRO computers allow enriched air (Nitrox) use from 21% to 100%. The ppO2 is
adjustable between 1 and 1,6bar.
Gauge mode turns of all warnings and alarms (except the low battery alarm) and monitors
depth, time and temperature without decompression calculations. The computer operates as
technical depth gauge to the maximal depth of the instrument.
Logbook: records depth, temperature and heart rate profiles after the dive and stores the most
recent 100 hours of dive information in 4-second sampling rate, which can be downloaded to
PC via the IR port.
An Apnea mode offers a wide range of features specifically for free-divers, including a faster
sampling rate, manual start and special alarms and warnings, adjustable water density and
specific logbook.
For safer diving-travel planning, an Altimeter accurately measures altitude and alerts the diver
when approaching an altitude incompatible with saturation status due to a recent dive
Active back light, with push on and push off function.

WHY MEASURE YOUR HEART RATE DURING DIVING?
The heart rate is an important indicator of potential stress. This has been known for a long time and an
array of products are available for ambitious athletes to analyze and evaluate their training. Whether a
passionate recreational athlete, professional marathon runner or just health-conscious – today a heart
rate monitor is almost a standard piece of equipment. So why not use this technology in diving as well?
A heart rate monitor lets you can keep an eye on the heartbeat under water and insures your dives are
even safer. By monitoring the heart rate, the workload can be better assessed and the diver can react
to heightened stress in a timely manner. Furthermore, by measuring the heart rate you can specifically
train to increase your endurance.
Since increased exertion while diving in deep water promotes circulation and this in turn increases
the nitrogen intake, the heart rate can also be used to calculate decompression times even more
accurately, again for safer diving. That’s why the SCUBAPRO GALILEO and MERIDIAN series computers
don’t just show the depth, no-stop times and decompression schedule but also continuously inform
the underwater athlete about his or her own heart rate, i.e. his or her personal stress, which in turn is
factored in when calculating other dive parameters.
However, there are several factors to consider when using the heart rate monitor while diving.
SCUBAPRO has published an informative booklet by scientists well reputed in the subject. It’s available

A commercial diver surveying factory in-flow pipes in
California, a marine biologist conducting research for the
Smithsonian, an IMX filmmaker preparing a documentary,
a police officer searching the lakes of Bavaria or a dive
instructor teaching in Okinawa: professionals rely on our
buoyancy control devices.
The first ‘Stabilizing BC’ was born at SCUBAPRO,
following the advice of a salesman suggesting we make
a wrap-around version of our recently released and very
successful back floatation jacket. The new STAB jacket,
appearing in the 1978 catalogue, combined a heads-up
floatation position with the diving ease of a back flotation
back pack, for unequalled stability regardless of position.
This jacket concept continues today identifiable under
the Classic name. We continue to invest and develop the

The air bladders are positioned on either side of the tank, rather than under
your arms or over your shoulders. Although the unique balance takes
some getting used to, many experienced divers move to these BCs to gain
more freedom of movement and reduce drag. The back flotation harness
also carries the load better for greater diving comfort on long or repeated

Most SCUBAPRO BCs have integrated weight systems in front and
some also have counterweight pockets on the backside making weight
belts unnecessary. The jackets are also equipped with convenient
instrument and accessory pockets or attachment points. All our BCs can
accommodate either a Balanced Power Inflator (BPI) or an Alternate
Inflator Regulator (AIR 2) and come with two dump valves, a hose pull

CHAPTER IV
It’s easy to say and difficult to do: protect. Our
environment needs protection and so do divers, as we
explore the various waters around the globe. Protection
from almost freezing oceans and lakes, repetitive dives
in temperate or warm waters, equatorial sun rays and
painful jelly fish. Where and how you dive and your
desired comfort level determines how much protection
you need. It’s your choice.
In 1996 SCUBAPRO introduced the Layers Z concept,
offering different thicknesses and pieces that could be
comfortably combined for more or less thermal body
protection. We even proposed a TPF (Thermal Protection
Factor) number on the sleeve of each piece, making the
chosen wetsuit a calculated one.
Along with free choice comes responsibility and in
addition to the various models, forms, materials, seals,
and closures we have applied to our suits throughout
the years, we also consider our environment. P.A.H.
(Polycyclic Aromatic Hyrocarbons) is found in many
things including petroleum based products, and can
be toxic in certain compounds. X-Foam, now used
in our wetsuits, is the only formula which complies
to very strict P.A.H. test requirements. We are very
encouraged to be able to offer this neoprene blend in
order to better protect both our divers and our seas.

Drysuits are designed to keep cold or polluted water out. To meet different needs, SCUBAPRO offers
a
TIZIP® MasterSeal is made from high-strength fabric,
coated with thermoplastic polyurethane. The extrastrong plastic teeth keep the water sealing edges
tight together when the zipper is closed. The TIZIP®
MasterSeal slider is made from a salt water resistant
metal compound, making it resilient to corrosion.
The slider movement is contact-free, meaning it
does not rub on the zipper tape or sealing edges,
causing less wear & tear.
TIZIP® MasterSeal zip keeps water out, yet its nonrigid, flexibility guarantees the best in dry comfort.
Neoprene drysuits
A drysuit made of high-density neoprene is as comfortable as a wetsuit and keeps you warm and
watertight in cold water. This is the ideal suit for recreational divers wanting an easy-to-put-on and
easy-to-wear drysuit. It can be used with or without undergarments.
Trilaminate drysuits
Drysuits made of trilaminate materials are hard-wearing, quick-drying and light-weight. They are
designed for intensive use and offer flexibility and comfort over a wide range of temperatures. They
can be worn with different types of undergarments for thermal protection. Trilaminate suits are
often preferred by commercial divers.
Semi-dry suits
A semi-dry suit is mid-way between a drysuit and wetsuit. It is close-fitting like a wetsuit, meaning
less drag and swimming effort than a bulkier dry suit. Although not completely sealed like a drysuit,
it has a semi-waterproof zipper and double seals at the neck, wrists and ankles to keep the entry of
cold water to a minimum.

C-Zip is a surf chest zipper concept applied to a
diving suit. Without the interference of a long back
zip, this suit stretches naturally with a very minimal
water entry. An additional back flap pulls over the
head, fitting around the neck and diminishing water
entry gaps. Neck discomfort from itchy Velcro is
eliminated and no more zipper cutting into your
back when loaded with a heavy tank. C-Zip allows
full autonomy, since it can be put on and taken off
without buddy help.
Wetsuits are designed for diving in temperate waters. The materials used provide the necessary
thermal insulation. Although water can enter the suit, it does not cause excessive heat loss because
it is warmed by the body and cannot easily circulate or escape if the suit fits properly. SCUBAPRO

Masks, fins and snorkels are standard fare in 2013. But
50 years ago choices were limited and color possibilities
less attractive. SCUBAPRO engineers focused on making
this product family just as technical as the others and
continue to do so. The Jet Fins were discovered by
founders Gustave della Valle and Dick Bonin, perfected

There are three main criteria to be considered when choosing a fin: power, efficiency and kick style.
The first two are largely related to design characteristics, which will in turn dictate the kick style that
should be used to obtain the maximum benefit from that design.
Blade versus split design
ARTICULATED FINS
Blade fins are more efficient but often more physically demanding. However vents and pivot control
ribs provide more flexibility on blade fins to obtain maximum performance with less effort. Split fins
are extremely flexible and are less strenuous to use than blade fins, however they require a very
different kick style to control the propeller-like movement of the split blades..
Articulated fins
Instead of the gradual curve of a traditional fin, articulated fins have a joint (like the tail of a whale
or dolphin) that allows the blade to pivot. This technology maintains the power, acceleration
and maneuverability of an efficient blade fin with limited fatigue. The entire blade now generates
effortless thrust.

Adjustable versus Full-Foot
Adjustable fins are easy to put on and provide a perfect fit. Worn with booties, they are perfect for
shore dives or when you need to walk with your equipment.
Full-foot fins can be worn on bare feet or with neoprene socks. They are less strenuous to use
because your ankles are not restrained by boots. They are often used as rentals and when boat
diving, as well as for snorkeling and warm water diving..

Masks let you see underwater by creating an air space between the water and your eyes. The mask
must fit properly to be comfortable and to create a watertight seal. The peripheral vision of a given
mask style is determined by its shape and volume, the color of the silicone and the number of lenses.
The silicone skirt should be soft for your comfort and also provide a good seal. Transparent skirts
let in more light but divers who need to focus on individual objects (e.g. such as photographers
