Berlin engineer Dr. Arthur Scherbius more than 15 years before the
outbreak of WWII and considered
so complex that it could produce
over 22 billion code combinations
without a single repetition. Enigma
machines have been in the news
again with the release of the 2015
thriller “The Imitation Game”
starring Benedict Cumberbatch as
British mathematician Alan Turing
… although it was actually Polish
cryptologist Marian Rejewski who
played a far greater role in cracking
the Enigma code.

The 19th century is considered by many to be the
‘Golden Age’ of automata. This fantastical piece by
Roullet et Decamps of Paris represents a winged
clown teasing a papier-mâché moon with a beetle on
a string. The personification of the moon, a popular theme in French culture, inspired illusionist and
film-maker Georges Méliès to produce “Le Voyage
dans la Lune” in 1902.
