2015 Term 2 Week 7 Newsletter MINI BLITZ-‐‑ Weeks 7 & 8 ‘When the music goes, stop your play, go to the toilet, get a drink and line up straight away!’ Whole School Assembly and Student of the Week Awards. Friday 29th May 2.50pm Mercy Centre Coming up…. REMINDER – Michael Grose Check out the calendar or the school app. We would love to see as many families as possible attend highly respected Parenting Expert – Michael Grose who will be speaking at Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Resort in the Willow Room from 7.00 – 8.30pm on the 9th June. Michael’s presentation will be on, ‘The Secret to Raising Confident Kids.’ He will discuss strategies that show us how to be confident family leaders and how we can develop confidence, character and creativity in our REMINDER – Children’s Mass – This Sunday Just a reminder that this Sunday will be a Children’s Mass and the invitation is extended to all families to come along and be a part of the celebration. REMINDER – Queens Birthday Holiday – Monday 8th June. Monday 8th June, 2015 is a designated Public Holiday so please put this date into your calendars and remember that there will be no classes on this day. Classes will resume on the following day Tuesday 9th June at normal time. children. The RSVP details attached to this newsletter. We have a number of families who are coming from other schools but have only had a few responses from our own school community. I would urge every family to have someone come along at what is a very reasonable cost for such a high profile parenting expert such as Michael Grose. Parent Engagement Group The Parent Engagement Group is a small group of parents who have come together on a regular basis to assist the school in further engaging parents in all things associated with Sacred Heart. The team has developed a plan to have Parent Representatives in the Foundation Centre ( Prep ) and the Discovery Centre ( Year 1/2 ). This will be a ‘trial’ plan that will seek to build communication between school and home as well build relationships and friendships across all our families. If the trial proves to be a success we will extend the program to the Bridging Centre ( Year 3/4 ) and the Leadership Centre ( Year 5/6 ) next year. We hope to get the program up and running by next term and once we have selected the Parent Rep’s in each area we will send further information home about how we hope initiate various activities across the learning centres. Information Night Our Information Sessions for all families interested in enrolling their son or daughter next year is to be held in the Mercy Centre on Tuesday 16th June. We’ll run two sessions – one at 10.00am and one at 7.00pm for those people who are unable to make it in the morning due to work commitments. Peace and best wishes, Paul Paul Maher Heather Keenan

Stay in the game with teens Reward responsible behaviour with greater freedom Use consequences like a good cop Give them problems to solve Choose battles wisely Take an interest in their interests & their lives Provide facts to help them make smart choices Open up the door to mentors and the wider community Encourage them to maintain multiple peer groups Form connections with other parents Don’t let them drop out of the family For a regular supply of great parenting ideas subscribe to Happy Kids email newsletter at parentingideas.com.au You’ll get a FREE Chores & Responsibilities Guide when you do! Children’s Chatter Matters! Language Learning activities to have a go at, at home. Ten activities will be provided over this term to help your child think a little bit deeper about the world around them and to use longer and more complex sentences. Expanding your child’s oral language use will lead to significant improvements in their writing also. You may need to adjust the activity to suit your child’s level: **After reading a story with your child, you could use one of these trigger phrases to improve the complexity of your child’s language. Model the entire phrase initially then gradually encourage your child to say the longer sentence by him/herself. • I couldn’t believe it when ………….. • While I was listening to the story I thought about ………… • A better ending to the story would have been ………….. • If I was the author of this book I would have ………… • This story reminds me of ……………….. • My favourite part was when ………………. ** For every simple question you ask your child, ask two complex ones. You can even do this while watching television or when they’re playing computer games For example: Term 2 Week 7 May 27th 2015 Page 4 Ø Simple question: What game are you playing? (This only requires a one word answer) Ø Complex questions: Tell me how you can get to the next level? What would you do if that happened to you? Why did you make that move? Remember: “Just because” is not an acceptable answer. Library Mrs Ryan Premiers'ʹ Reading Challenge 2015 Congratulations to our students who have completed the Premiers'ʹ Reading Challenge. At this point in time more students have completed the PRC than last year at our school.. What a tremendous effort. Congratulations to Caitlin Van Mannen, , Darla Lawless , Summer True, Victoria Laffan, Tom Davidson, Caitlin Brew and Ciara Smith who completed the PRC this past week. Twenty one days until the Premiers'ʹ Reading Challenge closes at our school. Happy Reading. Music Mrs Cussen MUSIC AWARDS Mabel Cope for always listening and participating so beautifully in music lessons each week. Jasmine Lewis for the happy and enthusiastic way you join in with your music lessons each week. RECONCILIATION WEEK is a time for all Australians to commit to a more inclusive Australian community. It is also a time to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. It is an ideal time for everyone to join in the reconciliation conversation and to think about how we can turn around the disadvantage experienced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is also a time to celebrate living in a country with the oldest living culture in the world. RECONCILIATION MASS Mr Maher, Mrs Cussen and Miss K will be taking the Fire Carriers to a special Reconciliation Mass next Wednesday at 11.am. This will be followed by an Aboriginal dance workshop for the children. Term 2 Week 7 May 27th 2015 Page 5 Foundation (Prep) Prep S Awards

Mathematics
in the Discovery
Centre
For the past week, have been focussing on
Multiplication and Division. At this level, we
use language such as “groups of,” “rows of”
and “sharing equally.”
Wil Thomson for using initiative and persistence when solving
challenging multiplication questions. Well done Wil!
Sharing and Buying:
Grace Pigdon for your wonderful alliteration poem in Creative Writing.
It has been brought to our attention that some
children have been sharing food or asking other
students for part of their morning tea or lunch.
We would appreciate if all parents spoke to their
children in regards to this, as we have a number
of children with allergies and intolerances to
certain foods. This is quite a concern for us and
we appreciate your support in this matter. Also,
some students have been trading cars and toys,
which has been causing mayhem, we ask that you
remind your child to not swap or trade toys.
Thank you.
Well done, Grace!
Summer True for being a good role model, always trying to do and be
your best.
Bohdi Leonard for your awesome effort and improvement with your
reading. Well done Champ! Our students

Fire Carriers Today, the Fire Carriers took part in a Reconciliation Mass and Indigenous Dance Workshop in Wangaratta. The children have been working together over the past few weeks and today was a great opportunity to represent our school. A3 Dance Performance Day Throughout this Term, the Leadership children have been working with the A3 dance group to prepare for a performance at Wodonga Catholic College. The children will perform their routine in front of other schools on Wednesday, 24th June. The children have one more practise with the A3 dancers on Tuesday, 16th June. Timetables During the past three weeks in Numeracy, the Year 5 children have been focusing on multiplication. We have noticed that many of the children are having difficulty recalling their timetables facts. We are encouraging all children to practise their timetables daily. This can include writing the tables out, using flash cards or listening to them on an iPod. If you would like any help sheets feel free to contact Meg O’Sullivan or Mr Boulton. Jumpers As the weather has begun to get colder, most children in the Leadership Centre have been wearing their jumpers. Unfortunately when the children take off their jumpers many of these have no names on them and we have issues with lost jumpers or unnamed jumpers left in lost property. Please ensure that your child’s jumper has their name clearly labelled somewhere. Artwork by Year 5 on display Coming Up…. •
