What is a wall?
“..a wall is known for protecting and strenghtening
the identity of a certain domain. It is an important structure
that mends and brides the intra and extra urban communities.
And in this project, the New Melaka Wall*s shall be the
Heritage core and the sorrounding support networks that will
act as synergetic urban elements that aims to balance and
distribute and social, economic and environmental developement.
Each element will work together in strengthening the identity
of the heritage core, which in return can give opportunties
for outlying communites to develop and become future
tourism features.
portal proximity
urban spatial coverage
“...by identifying and developing catalyst zones (economic,
social and environmental) outside the heritage area, a
support network will be grafted around the Melaka core.
This will create a bio-region that can provide mutual benefits
between the inner and outer core of the Heritage domain.
And together with the proposed new urban layers, these will
ensure a better and diverse experience in and out of the
heritage core. Such upliftment is crucial in creating new
social and economic opportunities in less developed areas,
in which its success lies in its physical connection to the core
but without compromising the sorrounding natural
environment.”

SHOP HOUSE - FRONT OPEN SPACE TYPOLOGY
“...once an orignal water edge of the Melaka
heritage core , the aim of redefining this edge
is to reclaim it’s lost role in the heritage
domain.
The different physical and experiential
elements are used to derived its new
identity. Series of negotiations between
different local and external factors were
integrated to form this urban wall segment.
In effect, this area becomes a portal-wall
that addresses the approach towards
the inner core. It ensures the connectivity
between significant areas inside from the
the transition areas from the Heritage
edge. New forms of activities are created,
that suits best the adaptive reuse of the
existing typology both in the old and new
urban fabrics.”

Conceptual scheme
Site in between. Between Chinese and Colonial history on sides plus two entries on its ends.
Originaly barrier that separated. It is time to reclaimed this area. Now.
Inflence come from all directions and acummulates by the river.
That generate the only possible riverfront in Malacca. Spinal cord serving both sides.
New proposal does take the vehicular traffic out of the core. Strategy is not to close it and let
it bleed to death, but it creates several strategies that gradually learn drivers to use different
routes or to stop on the boundary and walk (users of the inner or outer core). New Wall*s
contains those portals. Low speed traffic on Jalan Laksamana and through the Dutch Square
allows padestrians to use this site, to recconect both river banks.
Whole site will work like a cell.
Filtration of bad influance, regulation of flow of people or activities through the
membrane and generating new enegry for the outside. It becomes part of an
organism that live in a symbiotic cooperation.
