The first-ever retrospective
of ace filmmaker Girish Kasarvalli,
credit for organizing which goes to
the Bengaluru Kendra of the
Bhavan, was a runaway success.
The film screenings witnessed
more than full houses, with the pre
and post sessions seeing a panel
of talented film personalities
responding to a participative
audience.

and Sri. K.G. Raghavan, Hon. Secretary, BVB, while others on the dais join.
The five-day film festival held
in July end, screened 10 of
Kasarvalli’s 14 feature films,
when the Bhavan came alive to
the best in Indian cinema, with a
photography exhibition on

If such festivals and allied

this culture can surely be revived,

It was an honour to the
Bhavan that Kasaravalli was
present on all days of the festival,
interacting with the audience with
an ease usually not associated
with professionals of such
international standing. By this
token, it was one of those very
rare occasions when the public
could get to see and mingle with a
star, right in their midst.
A documentary, “Images

Adoor’s Imagery”, on renowned
filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan
brought the curtains down on this
one-of-its-kind film event.

Vyasapurnima or
Gurupurnima, when obeisance
is paid to paramaguru Veda
Vyasa, is an occasion to express
gratitude to one’s Guru, held in
highest esteem in Indian culture.
A Guru is held as one who dispels
the “darkness of ignorance” and
leads the aspirant on to the path
of enlightenment. Hence on the
day of Gurupurnima seekers are
grateful to their Guru and seek
his blessings.

BVB Kala Bharathi Show
WATCH OUT FOR
SEP 6, 11, 13, 19,
2015.
Training youngsters in
indigenous arts ensures continuity
of art traditions. It also creates
a new generation of aficionados,
which discerning capacity is
imperative for a vibrant art scene.
Kala Bharathi, the art training
centre of the Bengaluru Kendra
of the Bhavan begun about
18 years back with the objective
of propagating Indian arts through
grooming youngsters, has seen
scores of youth pass out of its
portals with a better understanding
of a particular art.
Some of them will be
exhibiting their skills on Sept. 6,
13, and 19, covering an array of
performing arts such as Carnatic
vocal, percussion, sugama
sangeetha, violin, keyboard,
flute and Bharatanatya.
The programmes will be held
at the Bhavan premises, from
10.30 am to 8 pm. Visual art
students will put up their works
for display on all three days.
This is a Dr. Mathoor
Krishnamurti Memorial
Endowment Programme.
Gayatri Sriram
Soulful dance
Gayatri Sriram
(Bharatanatya) performs at the
Bhavan on the 11th, at 6 pm.
A dancer with a fresh and
individualistic style and approach,
she brings meaning into her recital
not as a performer, but as a
believer. Her Asian Festival of
Classical Dance, “Samarpana”
in Singapore, has made a mark
for putting up new, substantive
11
and entertaining shows. A globetrotting dancer who has gone
places on her own merit,
“Samparpana” now has its
presence in Bengaluru, having tied
up with Ananya, a respected art
organization that has brought the
City and its artistes to the
international cultural map, with
collaborative efforts from dancers
of the City State and here.
Sept. 11. “Gaja Gauri Vrata”
will dwell on the genesis of Gowri
pooja—how the Pandavas
brought Airavatha from Devaloka,
and made their mother, Kunti,
offer it puja, despite her not
having a husband. The recital will
thus focus on the exalted status of
women inherent in Indian culture.
The episode also draws a
comparison between Kauravas
and Pandavas. The show is at
6.00 pm.
Rare Harikatha Show
Shobha Naidu is one of the
very few women Harikatha
artistes of Karnataka, who is
striving to keep the art alive with
a missionary zeal despite the art
itself having conceded space to
electronic entertainment media.
With her signature saffron turban
and a pulsating musical prelude,
she will perform at the Indian
Institute of World Culture on
Violin Duet
Ms. Sindhu and Ms. Smitha
Sisters Sindhu and Smitha
are adept at giving both vocal and
violin recitals. Grand-daughters of
violinist A V Venkatanarayana,
they have accompanied veteran
musicians, and have received
awards such as Kishora Pratibhe
and Yuva Pratibhe of the
Deprtment of Kannada and
Culture. They will perform at
Shruti Sindhura, Academy of
Music, Girinagar, on Sept. 26,
6 pm, as part of the BVB-Infosys
Foundation Outreach Programme.

OBITUARY : A TEACHER WHO ENDEARED
HIMSELF TO HIS STUDENTS
centre with a consistently high
academic performance and high
level of placement of its
graduates.
But what particularly set
apart Dr. Malavalli was his
friendliness and endearing attitude
towards his students, which made
him so popular that they would
throng his classes, and wait for
an opportunity to mingle with him.
He believed that every student
had potential to excel, which the
institute should tap. He maintained
a certain camaraderie with the
students, who will miss him the
most. His is a void which cannot
be filled, for he was a highly
accomplished professional whose
simplicity and warmth belied his
achievements and professional
stature.
Rarely does one come
across such modest persons,
who remain untouched by their
social or economic status. It is not
just the student community or the
faculty of the institute that will miss
him. The Bharaitya Vidya Bhavan
considers itself impoverished by
his absence, and expresses its
deep-felt condolences to his
family.

Dr. Nagesh S Malavalli,
