Fall 2015 - King of Kings Lutheran Church
The Kings Messenger is published quarterly for members and friends of King of Kings Lutheran Church
Woodbury, MN • FALL 2015 • August, September and October
From the Desk of Pastor Larson
Over the course of this past year, the
Church Council, Pastoral Leadership
and Ministry Staff of King of Kings have
been working diligently in conjunction
with our Congregational Consultant
to identify and implement several key
changes within the overall structure,
organization and operation of the church.
As Congregational Leadership, we have
surrounded this process in prayer and the
study of Scripture as we discern God’s
direction. Psalm 127:1 reminds us,
“Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain.”
As a result of this process, we have
identified a new mission and vision
statement that captures the heart and
focus of this family of faith. Our vision is
simple, “To Feed Physical and Spiritual
Hunger.” While it is a short phrase, it
captures the essence of what God has
called and equipped us to do.
While Matthew 25:35 speaks to
Physical Hunger,
“…for I was hungry and you gave
me food, I was thirsty and you gave me
something to drink, I was a stranger
and you welcomed me, …”
and Matthew 4:4 speaks to Spiritual
Hunger,
“But he answered, ‘It is written, “One does
not live by bread alone, but by every word
that comes from the mouth of God.” ’
Our vision statement also speaks to our
Hunger to be in Community. Hebrews
10:24-25 reminds us,
“And let us consider how to provoke
one another to love and good deeds,
not neglecting to meet together,
as is the habit of some, but encouraging
one another, and all the more as
you see the Day approaching.”
King of Kings has certainly been blessed
with a strong physical presence within the
city of Woodbury as we sit atop Radio
Drive. Yet more importantly, God also
calls and challenges us to be a witness

a whole new look!

in the world so that others may come to
know and experience His love.
It is within each of these three areas that
we are encouraged to experience and
grow in faith together.
In this installment of the Kings Messenger
you will find ways that we are partnering
together as we create and support a
variety of opportunities to connect:
ENGAGE
to establish lasting relationships, help
people discover and develop their gifts,
ask questions, learn about God, and
apply His Word to their lives;
EQUIP
to create an environment in which people
continue to grow in Christ and become
the instruments that God created them
to be;
EVOLVE
and to help them find where they can
use their gifts in all aspects of their life
—home, church and community.
God’s blessings,
Pastor Jon
COMING LATE
SUMMER!
What An Amazing God We Have!
by Pastor Liz Eide
“If you are offering your gift at
the altar and there remember
that your brother has something
against you, leave your gift there
in front of the altar. First go and
be reconciled to your brother,
then come and offer your gift.”
— Matthew 5:23 – 24
Your church staff is committed to always
growing and deepening our relationship
with God and with each other. So we’ve
been digging into God’s word this summer
and letting that guide us as we continue
to strive to be in healthy relationships with
one another. And it turns out God has a
lot to say about how we work, value and
invest in each other. It’s been risky but
rewarding conversation as we support
and pray for one another so that we can
continue to support and pray for all of you
in life-giving ways.
The scripture verse from Matthew 5 above
is one that we spent some time looking
at together and it’s one that ended up
written out and stuck on the wall next to my
computer so that I could see it each day.
It’s one that catches me by surprise
in two ways.
First I had read this verse many, many
times before I realized that it says to leave
your gift at the altar if “your brother has
something against you.” For I don’t know
how many years I read that backwards,
thinking it said that if I had something
against my brother I should go and be
reconciled. I had always approached
CONNECTION
this verse as saying something along the
lines of ‘don’t hold a grudge or come to
the altar of God angry.’ But here it’s just
the opposite. God says ‘don’t come to my
altar if someone’s angry with you.’ That’s
a bit more tricky isn’t it?
It also strikes me as somewhat amazing
that God is more concerned with the
relationship being reconciled than He is
about receiving our gift. Sharing our gifts
with God is a relational activity. It is about
trusting that God will provide all that we
need as we place our lives in God’s
hands and offer ourselves to be bearers
of God’s glory.
Here we find God providing for us even
before our gift is fully offered by caring
deeply for our relationships with one
another and offering His healing presence
in the midst of broken relationships. What
an amazing God we have!
As we come to God with the gifts of our
time, talents, and financial resources this
fall—and at any time—may we each
remember that we offer those gifts to a
relational God:
A God who cares deeply about our
relationship with Him and our relationships
with one another.
A God who offers His word and His grace
for the healing and filling of our lives.
GROUPS
Calling All Leaders!
Have you ever wanted to be more
involved in church and really wanted to
get to know people but it always seems
like it doesn’t work with your schedule?
What if you led your own group and set
your own schedule?
Most people think that they aren’t
capable of leading a group at church or
that it would be too much work, but did
you know that you don’t have to have all
the answers to lead a group, and it is less
work than you think? If you are interested
in talking about this more, please contact
Sue Oberg at sue.oberg@kingofkings
woodbury.org by August 20 and find
out how you can get involved.
If you already know you want to lead a
Connection group, please contact Sue and
fill out the Leader registration form located
at the front desk by September 5.
Altar Flowers
If you are interested in placing flowers at
the Altar for a special occasion, or in
honor/memory of someone, please email
Patty Bishop at patty.bishop@kingofkings
woodbury.org or call the church office
at 651-738-3110. Altar flowers start
at $35. Feel free to indicate any color
or varietal preference.

The Council Corner
by Gregg Grunewald, Council President
As I write this update, it is hard to believe
the calendar has just turned July and I
am writing for our Fall edition of this
newsletter. It has been a little over two
months since I have assumed the role
as your President of Council. And, I am
so pleased and privileged to have the
opportunity to continue the great work that
has been set in motion last year under the
umbrella of the Organizational and Staff
Development Initiative.
Bridging the update that Jim Fleming
provided in his last note to you, we have
now finalized and updated Roles and
Responsibilities of Congregation Staff,
Council, and Ministry Teams, and we
are close to finalizing and updating the
staff employee handbook. We have also
structured our monthly council meetings
to be more focused on strategy and
vision, status of our top priorities, and
the work and progress of the ministry
teams, and less on day-to-day operations
while still ensuring appropriate overall
goal performance and oversight.
Looking forward, our work now continues
along ensuring King of Kings has the right
organizational structure and constitution
bylaws. This is done to ensure we, as a
church body and structure, can move
effectively through Vision execution to
support the needs of the congregation.
We have kicked off that review and
are targeting the Annual Congregation
Meeting to be held February 2016 for
approval of any recommendations
to change.
All this work is done with purpose to have
the strongest foundation of staff, council,
and ministry teams to continue to advance
Christ’s mission as he calls us to do. That
work requires all of our time, talent and
resources to effect. And, I am always
humbly amazed yet never surprised at the
continuous outpouring of those gifts from
all of you. By the time I sit and write my
next update, we will have completed the
Feed My Starving Children event being
held October 8–11. I know many of you
have already donated financial gifts and
are planning to donate your time to the
event as well. I look forward to seeing you
there as we reach and exceed our goal to
pack four million meals and feed 11,000
children for one year.
As we build in excitement for this event, I
want to remind everyone of the need and
importance of keeping with our aligned
and planned giving for the current year.
We are blessed to be able to do so much
work with the financial gifts provided by
all of you. That said, there is more we
could be doing and want to be doing
and we are behind in our financial
contributions year to date.
As I close this update, I want to bring
forward the concept of “fanning the
flames” which I have shared with council
leadership and others. As I have seen
all of God’s wonderful work happening
each and every day throughout our
congregation, our desire is to continue
to take those wonderful ideas and
opportunities to serve Christ in so many
ways (the spark) and breathe fire into
them. I consider this one of my most
important roles in serving all of you this
year. To that end, please be open and
tell me what’s on your mind and your
heart. Let me know if there are questions
you have around any of the work we are
doing. It
is important you know I am here for you.
Blessings in Christ,
Gregg Grunewald
Council President
“For this reason I remind you
to fan into the flame the gift of
God, which is in you through
the laying of my hands”
— 2 Timothy 1:6
All Are Invited To Our Confirmation Celebration!
Please join us on October 24 and 25
during all services as our 10th grade
students confirm their belief in Jesus Christ
and understanding of the Lutheran tradition.
After two years in REV discovering and
articulating their values and beliefs, we
4
celebrate as a congregation these
wonderful students in this milestone of their
faith, sharing in their stories of how they see
God working in their lives and in the world,
and welcome them into our community of
God’s people. Tenth grade confirmands will
also gather together this fall on September
20, 27, and October 11 for a welcome
to King of Kings, stole-making party, and
Confirmation celebration.
“For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.”
— 1 Corinthians 3:9
Our Partnership With God
Volunteers Needed
Over the past several years we have had very successful Stewardship Campaigns as a
result of the continued generosity and support of the members and friends of this family
of faith.
Every week, over 100 volunteers help to
make worship possible. As fall approaches,
we are looking for volunteers in the
following positions:
We are certainly thankful for our partnership together.
Yet as we reflected on the scope and direction of this year’s campaign we found
ourselves feeling that there has been a “miss” of sorts.
While we have been diligent in highlighting all the ministries that are made possible
because of the gifts of your time, talents and financial resources, we sensed a need to
grow deeper in our understanding of what stewardship is and God’s call to be good
stewards of His many blessings.
As part of this year’s campaign we will not only be building upon our new vision
statement “To Feed Physical and Spiritual Hunger” as a way to highlight the variety
of ministries that are made possible through your gifts, but we will also be creating a
year-long campaign that will broaden and deepen our understanding of our relationship
to God, our partnership with Him, and why giving is so important in terms of our lives
of faith.
We are excited to grow together,
Chad Julius
Stewardship Team Lead
Change In SCRIP Card Sales
Beginning in September, we will have a new format for our SCRIP Card program.
We will only be ordering cards on the first and third Monday of every month.
If you have a special order, you will need to get it into the office by those days.
Orders that come in later will be placed on the next shipping date. Once orders
are received we will contact you to come pick them up.
For the month of November and December, we will be placing orders weekly to
accommodate the holiday season.
The money raised from the program benefits youth going on mission trips,
so please keep buying the SCRIP Cards and supporting our youth.

week and greet everyone who comes to
worship with a friendly word and a smile.
They are the first faces that people see
when entering King of Kings. To learn more
about the Welcome Ministry and becoming
a Greeter, contact Heidi Bardwell

Ushers, Readers, and Communion
Assistants
These are the folks who assist the
pastors to ensure that every worship
service moves smoothly and efficiently.
For more information on the opportunities
listed below, contact Chris Vorrie at
[email protected].
Ushers
Hand out service programs before
worship, provide seating assistance,
distribute offering baskets, and clean the
sanctuary following worship.
Readers
Deliver weekly scripture and other relevant
readings from the pulpit during all services.
In doing this they give the Word a new
voice to compliment the pastor’s sermon.
Communion Assistants
Aid in the distribution of communion
during worship services. Working in pairs,
communion assistants offer bread wafers
and wine with a blessing to worshippers.

Everest Vacation Bible School: Conquering
Challenges with God’s Mighty Power filled
King of Kings with over 230 3-year-old–4th
grade children in June. Through music,
activities, snacks, games and even real life
stories, children discovered that God has
the power to provide, to comfort, to heal,
to forgive and to love us forever. A huge
thank you to everyone who helped make
VBS an amazing experience for our kids
from donating items to helping transform
King of Kings into Base Camp to helping
during the week. Over 80 middle school,
high school and adults helped make
VBS possible!
BUGS Camp, a service camp for 6th
and 7th grade students who serve and
volunteer in the name of Jesus, took place
on June 22-25. Our scripture for the week
was Philippians 2:4-5, “Let each of you
look not to your own interests, but to the
interests of others. Let the same mind be
in you that was in Christ Jesus.” This year
we had 41 campers and 14 teen leaders.
The campers served at Second Harvest
Heartland, Feed My Starving Children,
Como Park, ARC Thrift, Canvas Health,
and in the gardens here at church along
side the 50+ Group and Garden Club.
It was a great week of serving in
Christ’s name.
Kelsey Battleson, REV/Confirmation
Coordinator, and Tracy Roy, Fusion (6th
and 7th grade) Coordinator took eight
youth to Buttermilk Falls Farm on June
30 for a day of service. The farm is a
certified organic farm that grows healthy
produce to help feed the surrounding
communities of Western Wisconsin and
the Twin Cities. The group worked in the
fields, spent time exploring the farm and
the land surrounding the farm (yes, there
is a waterfall), ate a healthy meal that
was cooked with produce from the farm
by the farm employees, and spent time
with the farm animals. It was a great day!
SUMMER
RECAP
Summer at King of Kings
Was Filled with Activity!
American Girls Camp celebrated the
values and character that make healthy,
strong and confident girls. Each day the
girls explored a different time period in
America and learned through cooking,
crafts, games and history how girls lived
and persevered. Over 25 middle school,
high school and adults served as leaders
and wonderful role models to the campers.
FUN!

RISE UP TOGETHER was the 2015 ELCA
Youth Gathering theme in Detroit where
over 30,000 teens from across the country
gathered in worship, service, and learning
to show up and support the city. Nineteen
students from King of Kings traveled by
van and by ferry to be a part of the work
and festivities including nightly worship in
Ford Field, activities throughout the day in
Cobo Center, and time spent in fellowship
together in the hotel, vans, and miles
of walking during the day. Stop by and
check out the youth bulletin boards to
see our youth RISE UP!
Camp Wapo in Amery, WI continued
to thrive with over 30 children at Seeds
weekend camp, over 100 students at
Youth Camp, and 16 high school students
at TIM Team. TIM Team is a leadership
development camp for high school students
who then return home to volunteer at
church. It was a great week of fun and
memorable camp activities!
Fifteen 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students
traveled to Sisseton, SD to the Lake
Traverse area community and Native
American reservation. Students led and
worked with the Kids Club, helped
community members with small projects,
and had fun each night, swimming,
cooking out, and attending cultural
events on the reservation.

A Backpack on the First Day of School
It’s something that so many of us buy
each year before school without a second
thought. We fill it with the required school
supplies, take snapshots of our kids sporting
their new pack the first day of school, and
then watch them get on the bus—excited
to use the supplies inside.
However, it isn’t like that for some kids.
From binders to USB drives and other gadgets,
ballooning back-to-school supply lists are
pinching the budgets of families in need.
Experts say school districts now have less
money for supplies, forcing them to rely
LOCAL
more on parents for items such as markers,
cleaning supplies, tissues, copy paper and
printer ink. While this is a hassle for middleclass parents, it’s a burden for families
struggling financially. Back-to-school time
can cause serious strain on family budgets.
Backpacks will go to children in local school
district 833.
That’s why we participate in a back-toschool backpack drive each year—to take
away that burden and stress of back-toschool time. And to help kids show up the
first day of school with dignity and smiles.
Prayerfully consider taking a tag off the
backpack display in the Gathering Space,
and return the supplies/backpack by
August 16.

WORSHIP
A Note From Chris...
& MUSIC
Our worship and music ministries bring a lot to the worship life of King of Kings. No matter
the skill set, these ministries consist of people who want to serve God and share the love of
Jesus Christ through praise and worship. It is our goal to make all feel welcome and create
an experience where people can authentically come before our Lord with an attitude of
praise, and experience a sense of community joined together in our Creator.
King of Kings has always been a place full of people eager to serve, and who are gifted
and called by God to share their talent, their time, or a smile to make our worship services
come together. It takes many people to make our worship ministry happen. Anyone can find
his or her fit with so many ways to help and be a part of our ministry. Please prayerfully
consider how you might volunteer as we build a ministry that honors our amazing God
through our worship and praise.

prior to worship, greet people at the doors.

ADULT LEARNING
King’s Sisters
Disciples of the Savior
Small Groups
Did you know Jesus was part of a small group? Yes, Jesus and his 12 disciples were a small
group. They learned together, cared and loved one another and shared their life together.
When times were good they celebrated, and when times were tough they stuck by one
another and helped each other. Jesus gave us this beautiful example and that is what he
wants for each of us. Church is supposed to be something we do and not just something we
go to like a good concert or a play. But how do we “do” church? It is done as Jesus did, in
a small group or what we like to call Connection groups.
Do you want to be involved, get to know people, learn and grow in faith? Then let’s “do”
some church by being involved in a Connection group! Here at King of Kings we are
making every effort to have more ways for you to connect with others.
Please keep your eyes and ears open for great opportunities to connect this fall! Information
on connection groups and registrations will begin on September 19!

Shop and Donate
Kowalski’s has donated over one and
a half million dollars to local charities
through our Groceries for Good Causes
(GFGC) program! The intent of GFGC is
to help the community directly surrounding
each store. It is meant to help nonprofit
organizations like schools, churches, food
shelves, youth support groups and animal
humane societies, to name a few. You’ve
probably seen this in our local Kowalski’s
market – customers place their receipts
in labeled boxes at the front of the store.
King of Kings receives a donation from
Kowalski’s quarterly based on the total
number of receipts collected in our bin.
So continue to drop off your receipt!

CARE MINISTRIES
PRAYER
BeFrienders Ministry Is Growing
Prayer Ministry Update
BeFrienders are trained to provide a confidential, non-judgmental,
listening presence to those experiencing a difficult life situation. Listening with compassion
and praying with those visited by BeFrienders has been found to provide hope and healing
to many in the four years this ministry has been present through King of Kings.
We are blessed to surround this congregation
and its partners in prayer.
Five members of the congregation have recently completed a six-week
BeFriender training program. Three others have completed the 4 day
training program for leadership. The BeFriender candidates include
Joni Szybatka, Linda Llonglet, Gayle Roggeman, Tami Olson, and Jim
Bjornlie. Pastor Jon Larson, Jan Olson and Bill Meyer join the BeFriender
leadership team. The candidates will serve an internship this summer
and commissioning will take place this fall.
If you or someone you know is experiencing a difficult situation, please consider the
BeFriender Ministry. Contact Pastor Jon or anyone on the BeFriender team if you have
questions or would like to be visited by a BeFriender.
BeFrienders
Are you or someone you know experiencing
job loss, financial difficulties, divorce, grief,
loneliness, illness, empty nest, or any other
difficult situation? You might consider getting
together with a BeFriender. A BeFriender
is trained to provide a confidential, nonjudgmental listening presence to those they
visit. They are not counselors, and do not
give advice; they listen with compassion
and pray with those they visit.

serve and help others, join us. When a need
for meals arises, an email comes to you with
the dates needed. You respond and bring a
simple meal to a very appreciative family.

We have certainly been busy this spring and
summer with Connection Group Bible Studies
on “The Essentials of Effective Prayer,” writing
prayers that will go in backpacks for several
Mission partners, assisting with prayer
partners for our graduates, and joining the
New Creation worship team as they lead the
chapel service at the Union Gospel Mission.
This fall we are excited to lead a Connection
Group Bible study, Living Free: Learning to
Pray God’s Word, by Beth Moore. I invite
you to watch for upcoming announcements
on opportunities to explore and enrich your
prayer life and your personal relationship with
Christ Jesus.
As part of my own prayer and devotional life,
I have been reading Max Lucado’s, Before
Amen. As a result, I’d like to share a table
prayer with you:
Daddy, (Max says, “It’s hard to show off
and call God “Daddy” at the same time.
Impossible, in fact…”)
We thank you for your AMAZING grace and
how you have gathered the entire world into
your Son, Jesus Christ. You are giving us our
food, our “manna,” for another day. Many
hands made this meal possible. Farmers grew
it. Truckers drove it. Grocers sold it. We
prepared it. Bless all those hands and help
us to never forget our dependence on you.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The team is looking forward to helping you
engage and develop a more active prayer life.
If you would like to be more involved in prayer
or the prayer ministry team, please contact me

Please help me welcome Drew Engh, Claire

We have also changed our coffee vendor. I

certified as fair trade and organic, and who
roasts the beans in small batches. The coffee
has a more rounded and smooth flavor.
We are blessed at Holy Grounds and are
thrilled to bring you another year of our best
service, gourmet treats, and delicious drinks.
