A FAMILY FOUR-WHEELING CLUB DEDICATED TO THE MOTTO •••••••• “TREAD LIGHTLY!”
residents Message
Havasu 4 Wheelers,
The holidays are behind us and the new year has begun with activities galore
for all to enjoy. We started off with the Annual Awards banquet with games,
prizes, dancing and more. Rodger and Diana Delk always do a fantastic job
with this annual dinner and this year was no exception. We had many many raffle prizes
thanks to those who collected them all from merchants around town. The club also earned a
whopping $575 thanks to two auction items, a golf package donated by the Refuge and a
beautiful necklace created and donated by our resident artist Diana Liston. We had quite the
bidding war which was fun to watch.
The following weekend several Havasu-4-Wheelers volunteered for the Havasu Balloon Festival which is always a
landmark event here in Havasu. On Sunday a group of 4-wheelers took a group of balloonists the back way to the
desert bar and showed them the desert up close and personal. They all enjoyed our Havasu hospitality and look
forward to returning next year.
The nomination committee is finalizing a slate of new potential Board of Directors, so if you are interested in getting
more involved with the club and would like to take on a Board position contact Bruce Speirs or Darryld Kautzmann to
be placed on the ballot.
Coming up is the Travel Management Plan Open House scheduled on Wednesday February 6 th at the Nautical Inn, 6pm.
Please try to attend to show our support for our trails. This should be the final version of the plan, and through all the
work of the Public Land Access Committee the outcome should be favorable.
On top of everything else we have lots and lots of runs to go on, so check out the website, sign up a
run and let’s go 4-wheeling!
Happy Valentine’s Day Everyone!

December 12, 2012
fter a little confusion as to the meeting location, we
ended up with 9 jeeps for the run and 4 vehicles
were a NO SHOW.
Our first little obstacle was a sandy hill, which has been
known to stop a few vehicles in their track, but our group
made it without a lick of trouble. This trail offers a variety
of scenic views starting with the portion that goes along
the edge of the wilderness area and provides a scenic view
of the hills that you just can’t appreciate from the highway. Farther down the trail you are on the power line
road where you get the view of the lake and city and
toward the end of the run you are looking at the area
north of I-40.
The Lake Havasu BLM Field Office has
scheduled a public Open House event for the
Havasu TMP (Travel Management Plan) on
February 6th, 3012 from 6:00 - 8:00pm at the
Nautical Inn.
At the area of the unusual rock formation we call “Snoopy
Rock” it became evident that members of our group had
very active imaginations as the “Snoopy Rock” morphed
into and including a dog house and a food bowl. Maybe
with a few more trips the other side of the rock with
change from just an alligator to who knows what.
The purpose of this event is to provide
information and progress of the Havasu Travel
Management Plan. Also the full, preliminary
TMP and Environmental Assessment will be
available (electronically) for public review. This
Thank you to those who came on the run and a special will also start a 60-day public comment period

Scott” Well and Beyond
A
t about 08:30 December 30th, 10 jeeps met at
Terribles at the I-40 and Hwy 95. After a quick
check in and a very quick drivers meeting, we
were on our way to the Franconia exit in our warm jeeps.
After a quick air-down at Franconia , we were on our way
to Scott’s well and beyond. After a stop at Scott’s well, we
continued up the hill. On this portion of the trail we
encountered some very out of the ordinary condition. It
started to snow on us. It was actually very nice to most of
us. Only one complaint from a snowbird, “I came to
Havasu to get away from this #%^&@.
After checking out the area at the top of the snowy trail we
headed down to a corral area and had a quick lunch. It
was still cold so most ate inside their jeep. We aired up in
sunny Havasu Heights about 1:30. It was a nice unusual
day enjoyed by a great bunch of people.
Thanks to Tom (Cheese Puff) Bunnell for being the Tailgunner.

T
This and That
his was a new run consisting of several runs
connected together. We stared at Bison with 14
Jeeps and proceeded to the Powerline trail, then we
went up about ¼ mile of Blue Berry Jam trail that had
several good obstacles. We continued to Red Line and had
one Jeep break on No Name Falls. With the help of Steve
Perry and a few others we bent and bolted him back
together. We continued on to Gold Springs then Hawks
Nest without any other problems. Thanks to Gary Wiskus,
Ron Satterfield and Ladell Olson for helping me with all
the pre-runs to put this run together. Watch for this run to
come up again in the near future.

Ward Bond sounds off on Trail Boss
♫ Roll Along Wagon Train, rollin' over prairies where there
ain't no grass, rollin' over mountains where there ain't no
pass, sittin' all aboard high in the weather, praying to the
Lord we stay together, side by side on the wagon train….♪
“Now listen up Pilgrims, us Trail Bosses have got together and they hereby
appointed me to explain the way things are done out here on a run.”
But first here’s a tip of the hat to those kindly trail cooks who bring
along some tasty baked goods to share with the gang. Ye Ha! We all
get fired up some when we see our favorites show up!
The trail bosses been scratching their noggin’s ‘bout people who
sign up for runs who then don’t show up. Dang nab bit, if we’d a
knownd you had no inclination of tagging along we wouldn’t have
sat at the meet location twiddling our thumbs. We’d a hit the trail
and be just dust on the horizon by now. Why the heck do ya think
them there cell phone numbers is listed, ya yahoo!
Here’s one more – when you come to a turn on the trail WAIT for
the pilgrim behind you before you scamper off. Something about
coming to a fork on the Santa Fe Trail that is juss plain
discombobulating to folks. Us Trail Bosses, oh we just love chasing
strays - and then hearing some tenderfoot at the campfire that night
grumbling how it was our fault he got cut out of the herd and lost.
BLM Mine Fencing project “You load sixteen tons and what do you get….
”Your H4W Conservation Committee Mine Fencing Group will again be working in
conjunction with the Lake Havasu BLM Office. The group will be heading out into
the trackless deserts to put up fencing to help prevent inadvertent falls into
unmarked vertical mine shafts. These mines, some dug in the 1880’s, present a
serious hazard to the unsuspecting desert visitor.
Some of these openings have been found on the top of some small peaks with
trails leading right to them. For you non-believers out there some years back we had a H4W’er
accidentally drive his jeep up to and into a vertical shaft. His rig fortunately got wedged in at the top
of it or it would have been like Arnold Schwarzenegger says, “Hasta la vista baby!”
New volunteers are always welcome and as trips are planned the word for work parties goes out. The
BLM supplies the fencing materials but we volunteer the tools, time, and trouble to do it all. Bring hat,
gloves, lunch, water and a chair. See Darryld Kautzmann for the Buck Mountain Mine fencing scheduled
for February 12th.

Ram’s Peak via Highline
O
n Friday, the 4th of January we had 10 Jeeps that
aired down at Home Depot. The day before the
wind was blowing and it was really cold so I was
hoping for good weather. We had a wind free, blue sky
day. We were able to have lunch on top of Ram’s peak
with a great scenic view. We took time to stop by You Go
Falls and to my surprise we had 8 Jeeps go over and come
back up the falls with no problems. Thanks to Gary
Wiskus (Big Cheese) and Ron Satterfield (Cheese Wiz) for
tailgunning.

January 16, 2013
I
nspired by a hardy group who had gone down the
week prior to see “where the heck that track ends,”
eight members in four jeeps wanted more of the
same. All bundled up from the cold, this time we traveled
all the way south as far as one can go then east till we ran
out of time (Traveled? Heck zig zagged is more like it if
you look at our GPS track). And this winter day it got
dark early in the canyons and the wind was freezing too so
leaving was OK. Admittedly we did loose time when I got
distracted on a side trail so another venture is likely. A
‘thank you’ to Ladell & Judy Olson for tail gunning.
Bruce Speirs – Trail Boss
n 1/8/2013, Nineteen jeeps were to meet and leave
Terribles at Hwy 95 and I-40 at 8:30am. We had
the group divide up in two groups where Bruce
Speirs led one group and John Strong the other. At 8:45
the first group (John Strong) left and shortly after the
second group left ( Bruce Speirs) . Our air down spot ( 18.8
mi ) was on Alamo Road and Boriana Road. The next stop
was McGuffies Cabin ( 59.5 mi ) where on the way we saw
the color transitions of the desert from a Joshua tree forest,
Pinyon pines, to hundreds of Saguaro cactus.
McGuffie cabin is a 3 room structure built in the 1940s
where Venice McGuffie lived untill the 1980s and 90 years
old. She had to drive 60 miles for gas and parked a 1/2 mile
from the cabin. Pictograghs are in the lower canyon
( 300m) include prehistoric anthropomorphic figures, hand
prints (negative and positive) , and geometric design. Along
the way we pass Mississippi Springs a water catchment for
sheep and quite a engineering marvel for our animals. One
can hike all the way to the Bill Williams River ( 5 mi. round
trip) but not enough time today.
After lunch we exited thru Slot Canyon which adds 2 miles
for our return trip to our air down spot. Thank you Mike
Yahrmarkt for being John Strong's Tail Gunner and
Ladell and Judy Olsen for being Bruce Speirs’ Tail
Gunner. Everyone did a great job and we were aired up by
3:30pm.
John Strong, Trail Boss

Red Line
O
BlueRibbon Coalition News Blast
Here is a bit of happy holiday news update from our
partners in balmy southern California.
The good news comes from Jeff Knoll, former Event
Director for the King of the Hammers. Naturally, Knoll
keeps a close eye on anything threatening the epic Johnson
Valley OHV area.
January 16, 2013
ur run started with 6 jeeps at Standard Wash, at
9:30 am. We followed Red Line trail enjoyed
several obstacles with one challenging water fall.
Our run then continued to the Gold Springs trail when our
group stopped at what’s called the Squeeze. The fun began
with a climb rated at a four. All of us enjoyed watching
Bob Drew take the extra credit challenge. He had great
climb. The group continued to the Hawks Nest followed by
another challenging water fall. Then on to the 5 dollar
falls, where Bob Drew, Bill Trunk & myself took the next
extra credit challenge which is rated a 4. After a great day
the group continued on out to Hwy. 95. A special thanks
to Gary Wiskus for being our tail gunner.
Knoll sent word that on January 2nd, President Obama
signed into law H.R. 4310, the National Defense
Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013. He says the
defense authorization bill includes a provision that will
require the USMC to study the feasibility of the use of the
OHV area under a permit, much like other users of the
BLM managed area are required to have, rather than to
absorb the OHV area into the Twenty-Nine Palms Marine
base.
Ron Satterfield, Trail Boss
The American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) has
reported that the provision triggers a hold on spending
and a 90-day deadline for the military to report to
Congress on how its proposed expansion of a Marine base
at Twentynine Palms, California will impact OHV use.
AMA reports the language was inserted into the bill by
Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (MD) with support from Sens. Diane
Feinstein (CA) and Mark Udall (CO).
Both Knoll and the AMA credit the partnership with the
California Motorized Recreation Council (CMRC) and
The Livingston Group in Washington, D.C., for the
provision. Wayne Allard, AMA's vice president for
government relations said "This was truly a team effort
involving many southern California motorized groups and
their elected representatives in Washington, D.C., as well
as other representatives in Congress."
Bill Trunk going over one of the water falls, Photo By: Sally Satterfield
The CMRC membership includes, the Off-Road Business
Association, California Association of 4-Wheel Drive
Clubs, California Off-Road Vehicle Association, AMA
National, American Sand Association, California-Nevada
Snowmobile Association, AMA District 36 (Northern California, Northwestern Nevada) and AMA District 37
(Southern California) Off-Road.

Skull Mt. Run & Hike
O
n Friday, January 11, seven vehicles left Standard
Wash to ride through several different wash areas
heading to the Black Mountains area. We arrived
at the parking area for Skull Mountain, just south of the
Black Mountains, Thirteen hikers and one dog set out on
the moderate trek over some hills to the Skull Mountain
water catchment. There was a lot of rock collecting along
the way, as the area has many different rocks, with lots of
crystal geode pieces. John Strong checked the tanks and
the water levels for a report to BLM. We had lunch at the
catchment, while enjoying the views. We then continued
around the mountains to complete the loop back to the
parking area.
Thank you to John Strong for being tail gunner and
carrying the AED.

Signal Ghost Town /
Gold Bug Mine
A
January 19, 2013
short notice run resulted in seven members in
four jeeps running out to Signal Ghost Town. We
checked out the graveyard and then decided to go
south the Gold Bug Mine. Fortunately we had Early West
with us so we knew where to go. This is a lonely track and
goes through some nice scenery. We then connected up
with the “old” Alamo Road and travel first through a
Joshua tree and then a Saguaro cactus forest along the
way. Arriving at Misery Well we discovered a seldom
used track which led us west over the northern end of the
McCracken Mtns. to an old ranch at Bateman Spring.
There we found three old buildings with lots of ‘stuff’ to
gawk at. A great run I’ll certainly do again. As always
‘thank you’ to Ladell & Judy Olson for tail gunning.

The Desert Bar-Back Way
T
en (10) Jeeps left the from the Ross store on
Sunday, January 20, at 11:00 a.m. We had fifteen
(15) visitors consisting of four (4) new members
and eleven (11) balloon pilots.
Snake was tailgunner and kept all of us on the path.
Thank you, Snake.
Rodger Delk, Trail Boss
This was the weekend of the Balloon Festival and several
of the Jeep Club members were volunteers for chase
vehicles and other assistance jobs. Several of the
ballooners asked about Jeeping in our area and stated that
they would like to rent Jeeps. I told them that with our
large Club membership, it should be no problem to get
members to volunteer to take them on a run and I
suggested the back way to the Desert Bar.
Cheryl then issued an “emergency” run and asked for
Jeep volunteers for that. We had several of our new
members step up and they brought friends who were also
applying for membership and this run was their initiation
Club run.
The run was very successful and it seemed everyone had a
great time. The balloon pilots were very happy to
experience a Jeep run and especially to see our desert.
Snake’s passenger was able to go on an “extra credit” and
they were thrilled to participate in a little more difficult
run than the rest of us did.
Thanks to all of you for going on the run with us – hope
you had as good a time as we did. A special thanks to our
new Club members and to the applying members – I
would especially like to extend my thanks to you for your
support.

“Wilderness” Designations Have Negative Impact On Local Economies
by Dave Halsey, NOHVCC Contributing Writer
Of all federal land-use designations, “Wilderness” is the most restrictive. It prohibits roads,
road construction, motorized travel, mechanized equipment, logging, mining, telecommunication
towers, transmission lines and energy pipelines. Environmentalists often claim that “Wilderness”
attracts tourism and boosts local economies. According to a recent study by Utah State University,
very often the opposite is true.
"The argument often stated by the environmental community that Wilderness is good for local
economies is simply not supported by the data,” states the summary of “The Economic Costs of
Wilderness.” Released in 2011, the study was written by Brian Steed, Ryan Yonk and Randy
Simmons, of the John M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State.
Conclusions from the study -- and useful talking points for OHV advocates to bring to meetings
that involve the Wilderness designation -- are important to note:
 When comparing Wilderness and Non-Wilderness Counties, Wilderness Counties are at an economic
disadvantage to their Non-Wilderness counterparts. Accordingly, if the test for whether or not to designate
Wilderness is economic, Wilderness fails.
 Economics did not underlie the Wilderness Act or any of the Wilderness Areas
established since the Act was passed (1964). Wilderness is established for emotional,
ecological, and cultural purposes. Results show that those purposes are accomplished at a cost to local economies.
 Controlling
for
other
factors
influencing
county
economic
conditions,
the
Wilderness
designation
is
significantly
associated
with
lower
per
capita
income,
lower total payroll, and lower total tax receipts in counties.
 Despite these differing views, Congress has continued creating Wilderness Areas. There are 759 Wilderness Areas
currently in the United States, totaling 109,663,992 Acres.
 Wilderness is managed by four federal agencies: the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. National Park Service, the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Land Management.
 Only six states contain no Wilderness: Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, and Rhode Island.
The Economic Costs of Wilderness” will make an excellent addition to the NOHVCC on-line library, which contains
many studies showing the positive impact OHV recreation has on state and local economies. To read the study and download a pdf of the findings for future reference, gohttp://www.environmentaltrends.org/single/article/the-economic-costsof-wilderness.html.

RATING
DESCRIPTION
1
EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.
2
EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.
3
EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure.
Substantial sections of single lane.
3¼
MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a
rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop
-offs and tight clearance between rocks.
3½
HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low
range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.
3¾
HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very
challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.
4
DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up
axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.
5
HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
