Congratulations to all of you who helped make last Friday’s
Junior Olympics such a great success! The day was led by
8th grade “Athletes of the Year” Daniel D. and Erin R.
Enrique Enguidanos was Master of Ceremony and got the
families going with rousing “Blue Thunder” cheering
competitions. There is so much coordination that goes into
making this one of the days all of the students and staff love
so much! A huge thank you to Mary Beard, Chris Dockter
and Meghan Smith for chairing this event. The sun came out
on occasion and the rain stayed away! So much learning
takes place outside of the classroom, and Junior Olympics is
no exception. This is what I see each year:
1. Cooperation
2. School Spirit
3. Sportsmanship
4. Team Effort
5. Seeing the potential in each other
6. Creativity (themes, cheers, dress)
7. School Pride
8. Respect for every skill level
9. Cheering on other teams
10. GREAT FUN!!
Thanks again to all of you.
Congratulations are also in order for our 26 eighth grade
students who will be graduating on Tuesday, June 4th. This
class is an excellent example of the ten characteristics
mentioned above. I know they will miss each other next year,
and they will be greatly missed by St. Matthew School. They
have worked very hard and contributed much to the life of
the school!
As you know, we attend Mass every Wednesday. During
yesterday’s Mass, Fr. Jerry invited former St. Matthew
graduate, Molly Flanigan, to speak to us about her
experiences volunteering for a three-month period in an
orphanage in Ghana. Molly spoke and showed slides of life
in the orphanage and how difficult the conditions are. One
couple runs the orphanage and school for 40 children. Molly
clearly has a passion for her work and explained to us just
our grateful they are for everything they receive. Their
library consists of only two shelves with very few books.
Over the course of the next year, Molly intends to raise as
much money as possible, and then return to Ghana,
hopefully with enough funds to support the orphanage for an
entire year!
Please look for more information about Molly’s efforts in the
next months as the parish will be supporting Molly’s
fundraising.
In terms of staffing for next year, there are a few changes.
We will be sad to see the following staff members leave St.
Matthew School; Angie Savio, Pre-Kindergarten assistant,
Elisa McCulloch, Learning Specialist, and Katie Davidson,
current middle school math assistant. Angie has only been
with us for one year, but she has brought much to the Pre-k
program and “Kid’s Club” and we wish her well as she
pursues her goal of becoming a teacher over the next few
years. Elisa, who has been at St. Matthew for two years, will
be seeking a full-time position in one of the larger school
districts. Katie will be leaving after nine years at St.
Matthew, working in many different capacities, and we thank
her for all of her work and dedication. The ESS Program
grew tremendously under her leadership. Please see the
enclosed letter Katie wanted to share with this community.
Tasha Boldon, current first grade assistant, will be moving
to the Kindergarten next fall to work with Ms. Prepotente
and a full class of five year olds! Many thanks to Mrs. Katie
Riss who has been filling in for Mrs. Edwards in the Library
as Mrs. Edwards recovers from her shoulder surgery.
Thank you Katie from everyone at St. Matthew.
Rep ort ca rds will be distributed on the last day of school,
June 12th. As per St. Matthew School policy, tuition
obligations and library fines must be taken care of in order
for a student to receive his or her report card. Please
contact Virginia Arnoux, school bookkeeper if you have any
questions about your account.
Look for the School Supplies List for the 2013-2014 school
year soon to be posted on the website.
There is still time to register your students for Summer
Thunder. It will be an action-packed international summer
experience.
Free Dress on Monday, June 3rd, in celebration of Rainbow
Heritage participation.
God Bless,
Lil

JUNIOR OLYMPICS 2013 THANK YOU!
Thank you Ms. Zadra, Teachers, Staff, Student Council, Mr. Brynildsen,
Parents and all the Volunteers!
This highly anticipated day could not have happened
without each and every one of you!
Thank you for loving Jr. Olympics as much as we do!
We had a great day on Friday competing in the 2013 Junior Olympic Games!
Here are some highlights from the day…..
Ms. Zadra said prayer with us, the Student Council read the Jr. Olympics Oath and Creed and some of the choir
members, led by Mrs. Landowski sang the National Anthem!
Thank you to all of you for your leadership on this day!
Our very own St. Matthew Speech Coach Mr. Enrique Enguidanos
was our energetic MC for the day! J
Zee Triplett, mother of 3rd grader Ahnika, was our key note speaker this year, speaking to us about sportsmanship and
doing your best. Mrs. Triplett started competing in track and field at the age of 8 and competed in the Jr. Olympics
every year through her senior year in high school. She attended the University of Washington on a full scholarship and
is on their top 10 all time list for long jump. In case you had not heard, Mrs. Triplett’s longest jump was 21 feet! She
currently co-coaches our cross country and track team.
Tug O War Challenge Winners!
The Orange Nemos led by the fearless 6th grade family leader Mrs. McCroskey, won the Tug O War challenge against
the 4th grade family leader Ms. Herber and the Light Blue - Blues Clues family. The orange team had some unknown
(adult) fish on their line that unfortunately caused the Blues Clues to cap size.
Our new tradition continued again this year with the (8th grade favorite) Faculty/staff vs. 8th grade tug-o-war!
Unfortunately the teachers were feeling over confident from last year (and were out numbered), it could have been
anyone’s win until the 8 th graders finally found their footing and worked together to make slow but steady progress,
dragging the faculty and staff members across the orange cone line! J
Best Costume
The 4th grade Light Blue – Blues Clues Family quickly forgot about the tug-o-war loss when they won the best costume
award. When they won, they jumped for joy as their blue foam ears bounced and their blue paws and tongues
wagged with joy!
Best Flag
The flags are designed by the 8th grade student(s) in each family and made at the Warm Beach retreat, just a few
days before Jr. Olympics. The Purple One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eaters’ flag (8 th grade family) was
created by designers Meagan King, Leila Al-Shibibi and Noah Tran.
Honorable mention: The Royal Blue Bunnies’ flag created by Anna Smith and Cole Lunde, which had a blue cotton tail
on the backside of it.
Best Cheer
There were many spirited cheers and songs but one family stood out in their creative song…second year in a row song
winner Ms. Gibney and the 1st grade family The White Olympians.

Boy/Girl Athletes of the Year
Erin Ripple and Daniel Damitio were crowned the 8th grade boy and girl athlete of the year. This honor is decided
by faculty members in regards to athleticism, sportsmanship and P.R.I.S.M. values. They received a sportsmanship
medal and a Barnes and Noble gift card. Together they carried the torch around the gym, the official start to the
Jr. Olympic games!
Individual Sportsmanship Winners!
Congratulations to the following students for earning the individual sportsmanship award for their family! They were
presented with sportsmanship medals: Angelica Dampier, Claire Beard, Jon Williams, Elizabeth Hawk, Clio Lunde,
Anna Smith, Anna Gillespie, Noah Tran, Leily Tesfaye and Zach Walls.
Best Sportsmanship
Ms. Prepotente, Kindergarten Family leader, and the Gray Sloth Ninja Spies won the highly coveted award for “Best
Sportsmanship”, winning an ice cream party and their family picture in the school hallway! They received many
compliments from the various event leaders regarding their cheering for others, their own team members, and the
unison of their cheers!
Congratulations to the following Kindergarten family members: Ms. Prepotente, Jr. Olympics family Assistants Steve
Locke and Tim Bowen, Madeline Walls, Abila Connor, Becca Brock, Angela Kantor, Eli Williams, Neylyn Duque,
Amaya Enguidanos, Steven Locke, Ethan Pan, Ahnika Triplett, Laura Beard, Thea Zabala, Elijah Berehnie, Elizabeth
Bowen, Brian Tanedo, Leily Tesfaye, Delaney LaVetter, Surafel Tesfaye, Madeline Hawk and Steven Cho.
Thank you to all of the 8th graders for being leaders in their family, in guiding the family members to collectively
decide on a family mascot name, a song/cheer
and for designing the flags!
Senai Adisu, Leila Al-Shibibi, Claire Beard, Alex Bury, Steven Cho, Daniel Damitio, Angelica Dampier, Sam Debesai,
Anna Dimak, Nigel Fernandes, Anna Gillespie, Madeline Hawk, Meagan King, Max Laevastu, Luke Tormey, Cole
Lunde, Alycia Nguyen, Erin Ripple, Anna Smith, Bettina Tanedo, Noah Tran, Alaina Van Hollebeke, Zachary Walls,
Danny Westin, Jonathon Williams, and Selome Zerai
We hope you come back someday to volunteer at Jr. Olympics!
Thanks everyone! See you next year at the 2014 Junior Olympic Games! J
