DISTRICT NEWSLETTER
New adventures and opportunities
are now a reality with the transition
to the K-12 learning environment.
It has been a successful fall for our
students academically, and to those
who participate in extra-curricular
activities whether in the fine arts
curriculum or on the playing field.
Fall 2010 Homecoming was a milestone for our district dedicating the
new stadium in honor of Perry
Shellenbarger and Vern Reed II.
Perry and Vern celebrated the prehomecoming festivities at the new
Perry Stadium and Reed Field with
many friends and family in attendance on October 1. Kurt Wilson,
a 1981 Hale High School graduate,
now working as a sports broadcaster at Central Michigan University, announced the event. A special thank you to the Sideliners
booster group and everyone in
the community who helped make
this occasion possible.

the program, five students have
set a goal to graduate in June
2011 with a Hale High School
diploma. Enrollment for the
second semester will take place
in January 2011. Congratulations to these students for their
commitment to obtaining their
high school diplomas and investing in their future!
Shortly after the school year
was underway this fall, we began
revisiting the district mission and
vision statements in alignment
with the Strategic Planning progress. A survey was available on
-line or through a paper submission during Open House and
Parent-TeacherConferences.
Once the results are released
from the survey, we will share
with the community.
Strategic Planning and School
Improvement go hand-in-hand.
Our K-12 curriculum alignment
process is underway as well.

Second Grade News
The second graders have
been working in Social

the rights and responsibilities that go with being a
citizen of the United States
of America. We have finished up our second theme
in reading and have taken
our reading test.
Our 2nd graders

Mrs, Barnes’ class made
Thanksgiving turkeys for a
special art project. The
turkeys were made from
foam and scratch paper.
Each student designed his
or her own design on the
scratch paper.
Mrs. Baczynski’s class composed their own Halloween
carol sung to the tune of
―Frosty the Snowman‖
which is as follows:
Black cats are scary
And some haunted houses,
too.
With some ghosts and goblins
running wild.
And some zombies chasing
you.
It must have been that big, bad
bat, that scared them on their
way.
For when the trick-or-treaters
came, they shrieked and ran
away.

Third graders are mad for
Michigan! In Social Studies,
Mrs. Look is teaching the
students all about the awesome state we call home.
As a way to celebrate Michigan’s history, the students
made Michigan Stone Maps.
They had fun picking out
different stones that came
from the shores of Lake
Huron and using them to fill
in the Upper and Lower
Peninsulas of our state. A
big thank you goes out to
Bernard Lumber for donating the boards for these
stone maps.
Mrs. Anderson used pumpkins donated by parents to
teach students about measurement in science. They
were surprised to find out
that pumpkins float! Now
the students are using mirrors and various other objects to discover properties
of light.
Our big project for the holidays is Ginger Bread
Houses. We are very appreciative of all the donations that came in from
parents. Students created
incredible little houses to
take home as well as memories to last a lifetime. We
also want to thank the parents that gave their time to
help out in the classrooms.
Fourth Grade News
It is hard to believe how
quickly our year is flying
by. Fourth graders are
learning so much! Our
science unit on the Earth
and night sky is very interesting. We are becoming
more aware of our country, researching other
states and regions, and
identifying various landforms. Our AR scores are
zooming as each classroom nears 800 points.
MyPyramid is a new health
program that looks at
healthy eating habits and
physical activity choices.
And finally, we will be attending Seussical the Musi-
cal in March. WOW!
Fourth grade sure is exciting.

Sixth Grade News
It has been very busy in sixth
grade so far this year. In Language Arts, our students are currently addressing the topic ―How
do we decide what is true?‖
Students are also practicing writing complete responses to essay
questions.
We are beginning to learn algebra
in math class. Students were
surprised at how easy and fun
algebra can be. However, we still
need to practice our basic math
skills.
Students think science is
very interesting. They enjoyed
creating books about minerals
and rocks, and consider themselves somewhat of rock experts. They also are intrigued to
continue to learn about plate
tectonics.
In social studies, the sixth graders
worked very hard on their map
reading After a lot of practice,
they feel more confident with their
mapping abilities and geography
skills. Celebrate Excellence, our
reward trip for good behavior, was
a hit. Congratulations to all of the
sixth graders who were able to
watch the movie ―MegaMind‖.
They thought it was awesome,
hilarious, and entertaining.

Seventh Grade News
In Mrs. Bernard’s Language Arts
class, we are reading mystery
genres. Mrs. Bernard has us
write a summary about what we
have read in our mystery book
so that we won’t forget what it
is about. A portion of the class
is reading The Hardy Boys and
the rest of us are reading Nancy
Drew. In Mrs. Bernard’s class,
we are also learning about physical description and how to pick
out pieces of information that
allows us to see, hear or smell
the scene. Also, we learned
about homonyms and personification.
In Ms. Schick’s Math class, we
are learning how to multiply and
divide decimals. Another thing
we are learning is how to convert measurements in a form of
a greater than or less than
measurement. Ms. Schick is
going over integers and how to

determine negative and positive
on a number line. Also, we are
learning how to determine if an
integer is above the 0 on a number line or below it. Ms. Schick is
teaching us about positive and
negative effects of a number line.
In Mr. Heydon’s Science class, we
are learning about cells. Mr. Heydon has us take specific notes
about cells. He also teaches us
about the cell membranes and
what effects they have. Both an
animal and plant cell have a cell
membrane, but plants only have
cell walls. Mr. Heydon has us
complete a worksheet on cells
and we have to take notes and
study. Mr. Heydon has us all read
a packet as a class to discuss cells.
He makes sure that we understand what cells specifically are
and will demonstrate examples on
the board for us. Before learning
about cells, Mr. Heydon had a real

room, he had us write about butterflies. It was interesting because we
could study it and learn more about
Monarch butterflies.
In Mrs. Unke’s Social Studies class,
we are learning about Europe and
Russia. We have learned about the
Danube River specifically. We
made scrambled notes about the
climate, topography, temperature,
etc. about Russia. We had to do a
map quiz on Europe/Russia. On the
quiz, we had to label all the mountain ranges, rivers, bodies of water
and land masses in Russia. Presently, we are working on the Eastern Hemisphere.

Over the years, we have
learned many things and
have had great times, but
this year has been the best
overall. This new school

Spanish. Music Appreciation is very informative and
unique. In our other new
class, Spanish, we have
learned about the Mexican

have a small, simple conversation in Spanish. In English
class, we are reading a suspenseful book called, Pictures of Hollis Woods.

―It is believed music learning
activates various areas of the
brain and synchronizes the mind
for learning at a fast pace while
stretching the memory to a
higher level of retention. Music
enhances cognitive learning and
facilitates growth in many areas
of human development, i.e.,
motivation, social skills, time
management, situational awareness, aesthetic appreciation, etc.
As we learn more about the
integration of emotional intelligence and cognitive learning
patterns, it is ever apparent the
study of music has a direct relationship to the measured success
of the individual/student via reasoning, creative thinking, decisionmaking, and problem solving.
The reason to LEARN MUSIC is
to MAKE MUSIC. Music touches
a part of our psyche that helps
us regulate our lives. Music helps
us understand and express our
moods and attitudes. Music helps
us reorganize our thoughts and
feelings while keeping us on
track. Music allows us to respond
appropriately in social structure
that is often confusing and complex. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE
FOR MUSIC.

Hale High School Yearbook
Attention Seniors & Their Parents/Guardians!!!
Most seniors get their pictures taken for their senior year; some by professional photographers, some
by a friend or family member. Either is fine for using in the yearbook and the senior video. However, we
would like some uniformity if at all possible when we put the entire senior class’s photographs together
for the Senior Composite picture that gets displayed in the Hale High School cafeteria.
Senior Photo Requirements:
Please get your senior pictures to Mrs. Plude, in room 219, by December 16th, before we leave
for Christmas break.
Your photos can be delivered in digital format (at least 400 dpi) or the printed pictures can be
brought in and we will scan them.
Photos needed:
1 photo of just the head and shoulders for the composite picture, it should have a plain
background,
no hands or props in the photo, and it should be in normal portrait format – taller than it is
Please turn in your
wide.
Senior Pictures by
1 favorite senior pose for the student’s feature page in the yearbook.
December 16th!
1 favorite baby picture of the student, also for the feature page.
Up to 15 pictures of the senior from birth to now; these and the 3 pictures above will be
included in the Senior Video that is shown at Senior Night and at the Commencement Program.
Please write your name on the back of each picture and number them, 1 being the most
important to include in the video (use a felt tip pen or write lightly and make sure the ink is dry before
stacking the pictures), and place them in an envelope with the senior’s name on it as well.
Photos will be returned when we are done putting them in the yearbook and video.
If you have any questions or will not be able to get your photographs in before December 16, 2011 for
Be sure to order any reason just call 989-728-3551 ext. 219 or send an e-mail to [email protected]. Photographers can also email any professional photographs to this address if they like.

WE NEED YOUR PICTURES!
We are well on our way to developing the new 2010-2011 Yearbook, but with your pictures it will be
that much better. Please share your pictures with us as you are taking them throughout the school year.
The yearbook photographers may miss some events, a fantastic moment, or the angle that was best and
you may have captured that perfect picture! You can get your pictures to us in a couple different ways:
Send in your memory card or put the pictures on a flash drive or CD and send them in with your
student, they can bring them to room 219. It only takes us a minute to copy them for the yearbook.
You can also attach them to an email and send them to [email protected].
Any way you choose, you will be sharing your pictures and will have a chance of getting them published

So Now You’ve Had Your Parent-Teacher Conferences
So now you’ve had your conferences and there are areas your child needs to work on. Now what? Here
are a few helpful tips.
1) Look through your child’s backpack. Papers go home regularly from their classrooms showing
what they’ve done that week. Taking the time to go through these papers can help you with knowing what
they are learning.
2) Set aside time for homework each night. Whether a child has homework or not, there are skills
that they can review and strengthen. Use the papers that come home from school to guide you on minireview lessons at home. Give your child one or two math problems similar to the math work sent home.
Review spelling and vocabulary words. This may only take five or ten minutes every night.
3) Talk to your child. Ask them about their day. Encourage conversations about what they’re learning,
who they play with, what was their favorite thing they did in school. This shows your child that school is
important to you and it should be important to them. It also helps sustain learning. You could even have
your child ―teach‖ you something new they learned today. Again, going through their backpacks, may give
you a heads-up for reluctant kids. You may have to initiate it at first, but the more you practice, the more
comfortable they will be about sharing.
4) Talk with teachers. Establishing a positive relationship with your child’s teacher is very important.
Continue to follow up on your child’s progress by calling the teacher after or before school, setting up midmarking period conferences, or writing notes will help keep current on your child’s progress.
5) Find support. A mentor, tutor, or family member can help with struggling learners. This person must
be able to build a positive relationship with your child and be willing to work on a regular basis. Also, find
support for yourself. Parents often need to find other people to talk out their problems with.
6) Set a regular bed time. Children aged 5-12 need 7-10 hours of sleep every night. Some kids, like
adults, can survive on more or less
sleep. Each person is different. Find out how much
time your child needs to sleep to be
at their best. Too much or too little sleep can cause
serious problems in school. They
may act out, become hyperactive, be lethargic and
sleepy, not ―be with it‖, cranky,
whiny, or testy.
7) Establish routines. Children need to understand what is going to happen and when. Getting students
up at the same time of day is an example of a routine. Whenever possible, allow students to do for themselves, or learn to do for themselves. For example, buy them an alarm clock to set and wake them up each
morning. (You’ll still need to make sure they are getting up!)
8) Eat Healthy. Eating regular meals with the five food groups in each meal can greatly increase brain
function. Choosing healthy snacks like carrots, apples, and grapes give extra boosts to our bodies during
the in-between meal times. Sitting down at a dinner table with your family can be an extra bonus. Not only does this allow us to watch what our children eat, but provides us
with a nice time to talk with our children about their day.

Trees of Appreciation
Annual Fundraiser
Dear Patron:
We would like to express our gratefulness for your past contributions to the Hale Area Education Foundation. It is time again
to consider your year-end charitable contributions and also our
annual Trees of Appreciation fundraiser. We have planted a
tree in front of the school on Main Street. For each donation of
$5.00 or more, a white light is changed to blue. It is our goal
each year to completely light the tree in blue.
Donations may be made at Hale Area Schools. If a donation is
made in someone’s memory, the honoree will receive a card
notifying him/her of the donation. A paper tree is displayed in
the school. Students or school personnel can buy a $1.00 paper
ornament to put on the tree. Donors are encouraged to write a
compliment to a deserving individual on the ornament. The
project not only raises funds, but also encourages people to
show appreciation or share kind thoughts.
