• in the early 90’ Leszek Balcerowicz (SGH graduate) carried out reforms from
socialist-style planned economy into market economy

and was holding EU presidency in the second half of 2011.

WHY TO STUDY AT SGH?
SGH: TRADITION AND PRESTIGE
• Founded in 1906
• It is here that the creators of the Polish
economic transformation were educated
• SGH graduates are present in the highest
economic and political positions
• SGH alumni are seen as the most valuable

HISTORY (1906-1945)
• Poland’s oldest university of economics and management
• Founded in 1906 by August Zieliński
• Full academic rights granted in 1924
• 1919-1939: 2300 diplomas awarded including: over 500 Master’s
degrees and 30 Ph.D. titles.
• Uninterrupted education during WWII
HISTORY (1945-1991)
• 1950’s – 80’s: Educating staff for the centrally planned
economy (renamed: Central School of Planning & Statistics)
• 1950’s – 80’s: Despite obstacles „research schools” has been
established. They were considered the avant-garde of economic
thought.
• Among the most famous were schools of Prof. Michal Kalecki,
Prof. Aleksy Wakar and Prof. Oskar Lange
• After 1989, SGH staff is leading the process of systemic
transformation in Poland headed by Prof. Leszek Balcerowicz
HISTORY AFTER 1991
• 5th of April, 1991 renamed back to Central School of Commerce
(Szkoła Główna Handlowa).
• Official name in English: Warsaw School of Economics (SGH)
• Reforms launched and extensive international co-operation initiated
in early 1990’s.
