Feast Day of St. Ann and St. Joachim - July 26th
In the plan of God, there lived two deeply spiritual
people who were childless. Each one, Ann and Joachim,
prayed fervently and an angel was sent to them and
promised them a child. As you know, the child was Mary,
the Mother of Jesus.
Although St. Ann is not mentioned in the Bible,
veneration to her can be traced back to the 4th century. The
feast did not become universal until 1584 when Pope
Gregory XIII prescribed it for the worldwide Church.
History has not passed on anything extraordinary about
her – however, we can safely assume that she led the simple
life of a typical Jewish woman of her time. She eventually
became the grandmother of an extraordinary grandson –
Jesus.
A few years ago, our students were assigned a special
project in preparation for All Saints Day. They busily
studied the lives of many saints, and, of course, their
Patroness was high up on many lists. The following is one
bit of history that several students found:
“Not too far away from Raritan, in 1905, American
Passionist priests built a monastery in the mining center of
Scranton, Pa. and dedicated it to St. Ann.
It was built over a coal mine. On August 15, 1911, the
monastery shook, cracked and split due to a severe mine
subsidence. Again on July 28, 1913, an even more
menacing disturbance took place. A gigantic “squeeze”
threatened to slide the whole monastery and church down
the hill. The Passionists and neighbors prayed to St. Ann
for help. The next morning, on an inspection of the mines
that run under the monastery, it was found that the slide had
suddenly stopped, turned back and settled solidly under the
monastery.
So started the great devotion to St. Ann at the Shrine
(now a Basilica) in Scranton. The monastery was dedicated
on April 2, 1929. The weekly Monday Novena began and is
still continued as of this day. Also, in July people come to
Scranton by plane, train, bus and on foot for the Novena
which is prayed several times each day. It has been
recorded that 10,000 people per day attend the annual 10
day Solemn Novena in Scranton which begins on July 17th
and ends, with great solemnity, on July 26th, the feast of St.
Ann and St. Joachim.”
Let us be grateful when we reflect on the humble, but
powerful Patroness of our beloved Parish.

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Anthony was walking by the sea in his bare feet on a fresh July morning. It was his way of marking the first anniversary of his father’s death from lung cancer at the age of seventy-five. The beach was a spiritual place where many
of the loveliest days of their relationship could be contemplated. It was on that beach that he spent a lot of time with
his father, whether walking, cycling, or simply kicking a football around. They had many a long talk there too and
times of long silences, just looking out over the ocean. The two went to football games together each weekend and had
grown very close since Anthony was an only child.
Among the happy memories that flooded back to Anthony as he walked by the sea was sheer gratitude for his
father’s loving care over his three decades of life. There was not a day when he didn’t think of his father and the nurturing role he played in his life. He reflected how difficult it was to know where fatherhood ended and friendship began. “Dad and best friend” was the kind of relationship they enjoyed.
Today’s Scripture Lessons tell us that our God is an approachable God – both Father and friend. Even as the outraged Lord of the Old Testament prepared to punish Sodom and Gomorrah for the wickedness of their inhabitants,
Abraham was able to negotiate with him. In today’s Gospel Lesson, Jesus suggests a way of praying that connects us
with our creator who is also our friend. He introduces what we call the “Our Father”. Note that it’s “Our Father”
rather than “My Father”. We relate to God as a human family, rather than simply as individuals.
The Gospel also contains the parable of the friend at midnight. That friend is knocking at a neighbour’s door,
seeking help to offer hospitality to a traveller who has just arrived at his home in need of food and shelter. Of course,
there were no late-night supermarkets in those days, so borrowing from a friend was the only option. What seems to
be so important in the story is the persistence shown by the man knocking on the door. But note that the whole encounter is underpinned by the security of friendship enjoyed by the two individuals. Jesus is saying that if friends
come through for us despite the inconveniences they face, how much more will God come through for us.
Saint Luke, more than any other of the writers of the Gospels, tells us about the prayer life of Jesus. Jesus prayed
often, regularly connecting with God the Father. In the same way we are encouraged to work on developing our relationship with our Father and creator. The gift of receiving God’s Holy Spirit is there for us.
So prayer is about connecting. Like plugging in an electrical appliance or logging on to the internet, it won’t
work unless we enable the connection to be made. Prayer is a way of connecting to God, enabling us to communicate –
to listen and to speak. A good conversation is wonderful. In order for a good conversation to flow, the people in conversation need mutual respect, honesty, self-reflection, and humility to genuinely listen and hear what the other is saying.
We should not be afraid of engaging with God our creator in conversation and welcoming the presence of God’s
Holy Spirit into our lives. Jesus encourages us to speak freely with God and give voice to our longings. It’s also good
to make time for stillness and reflection each day, otherwise God cannot fit into our busy lives. Being connected to
God, developing our relationship with God, learning to communicate with God is a central part of what living as a
person of faith is about. It is not an optional extra for particularly “prayerful” people or something that is only done in
church. Prayer is for everybody, and can take place every day and everywhere.
Prayer can at times be difficult, but even at difficult times it helps if we try to make more of a habit of daily
prayer and develop our spiritual dimension. Jesus teaches us to be persistent – until prayer becomes a daily ongoing
conversation with God. We could converse with God when waking up in the morning, when considering our state of
health and the well-being of family and friends. Thanking God for our blessings is important too. Whenever we pray,
we can know for sure that God, our Father, our creator and our friend, will be listening, and ready to talk with us.
In your charity, please pray for the sick and lonely—visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all
who have wandered from the Faith and all who have died, especially the parents of the babies who have been killed
through abortion.
May God always be pleased with us!
Monsignor Michael
Pastor
