Mayor’s Message
Fall is an exciting time of year:
the weather is cooler, there
are many holidays that we
celebrate, the leaves will soon
be changing to their glorious
colors. The first day of fall this
year will be September 22 and
will certainly be welcomed.
Vestavia Hills recently received The American
Sports Builders Award given annually for facilities
that exemplify construction excellence. The Sicard
Hollow Athletic Complex was recognized as the Sports
Multi-Field Facility of the Year. We are very proud of
this honor and hope you will visit the Complex.
The Parks and Recreation, Public Works and
Engineering Departments have been restructured
to form Public Services. Brian Davis will serve as
Director and may be contacted at 205-978-0166 or
[email protected]. His office is now
located in the Municipal Center.
Congratulations to Public Services employee
Eugene Henry for being named The Rotary Club of
Vestavia Hills’ 2012-13 Civic Employee of the Year
to recognize his assistance in the aftermath of the
April 27, 2011 tornado. He coordinated the efforts of
the City and contractor to remove more than 300,000
cubic yards of debris.
Also, congratulations to our newly-elected City
Council members. I look forward to working with
them during the next Administration.

VHPD ASSUMES ANIMAL CONTROL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR
THE CITY OF VESTAVIA HILLS
The City of Vestavia Hills is pleased to announce that effective June 15, 2012 Animal Control functions
transitioned from Public Services to the Vestavia Hills Police Department. This should allow for more
efficient Animal Control and afford us an opportunity to expand educational programs, facilitate
communication and promote community involvement concerning the proper care of animals.
You may notice a few changes with this transition, including a new Animal Control vehicle with
VHPD graphics patrolling the City. Additionally, we will be utilizing the new City website and social
media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to help reunite lost pets with their owners, as well as to
promote the adoption of abandoned pets.
VHPD Animal Control is currently investigating the potential issue of feral cats in our City. If you
suspect they are in your neighborhood, please contact us.
If you need Animal Control, please call Police Dispatch at 205-823-1153 or “911,” if it is an emergency.
For general questions, you may contact the Animal Control Supervisor at 205-978-0151 or by e-mail
at [email protected].

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT 2012
Mark your calendar! VHPD & VHFD invite everyone to our
2nd annual National Night Out on October 2 (6 p.m.-8:30 p.m.).
Last year, the 1st National Night Out earned the “Rookie of
the Year” honor from the national event committee. This
year’s event will be even better and will be held at Vestavia
Hills Baptist Church (2600 Vestavia Drive). Police and fire
personnel, equipment and vehicles (including LifeSaver One
Helicopter) will be on site. Local vendors will provide food,
fun, live music, product demos and much more! We hope
everyone will make plans to come out and take part in our
community’s symbolic stance against crime.
In connection with National Night Out, “Project 365” is a
program in which public safety is challenged to launch an
initiative that makes a positive impact on the community as
a whole. Last year, “Shades of Vestavia” raised funds for tree
replacement in areas damaged by the April tornadoes and
was a resounding success!
This year, VHPD & VHFD will launch our next “Project 365”
entitled “Operation OverWatch.” We are excited about the
potential of this joint project and full details will be available
at the event. Make plans to join us and learn how to take
advantage of this unique opportunity and service.
We extend special thanks to the primary sponsors of this
event: Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, Two Men and a Truck,
Andy’s Creekside Nursery, Vestavia Hills Sunrise Rotary Club,
and Target. If you or your business would like to participate,
sponsor or are interested in more details, please visit our
website at www.vestaviahillspolice.com, call or e-mail Lt. Brian
Gilham at 205-978-0194 or [email protected].

Bring Your Own Device: The BYOD Pilot
Vestavia Hills City Schools are committed to aiding students and staff in creating a 21st century learning environment. We
are piloting a new program, “Bring Your Own Device,” or BYOD. For purposes of BYOD, “devices” are personally owned, wireless,
portable electronic equipment used for instructional purposes.
Each of the district’s schools will participate in the BYOD pilot. Selected classrooms in each school will participate. Teachers
volunteered in Spring 2012 to be a part of the pilot. Students in pilot classrooms may be allowed, but will not be required, to
bring and use personal, portable, electronic devices starting at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. In order to comply
with federal regulations, all student-owned devices will be subject to Internet filtering policies.
All devices brought from home may only be used while in the classroom. K-8 pilot classroom students may use smartphones,
iPod Touches, eReaders (such as Nooks and Kindles), tablet computers, and laptops. Students in Grades 9-12 may use tablet
computers, laptops, or eReaders. Note to parents: new devices are not required.
Student safety and appropriate use are utmost considerations for analysis of the BYOD initiative. With close to 7,000 students
in the district, this year will be one of identifying the challenges and successes of BYOD with a limited number of classrooms.
Pilot teachers from across the district have participated in special training to launch these classrooms and will meet monthly
during the school year to share ideas and problem-solve.
How might the BYOD pilot benefit students? All the district’s classrooms feature interactive learning, but students have to share
school-owned devices such as laptops, iPads, or iPad Touches. BYOD will allow students to work more independently on research,
interactive educational activities, or technology-based learning tasks. Eventually, we hope the devices will mean lighter backpacks
unburdened by heavy textbooks and practical student organization using online student calendars and study tools.
Students participating in BYOD classrooms, and their parents, will be given detailed guidelines about usage, virus-protection,
and student responsibility for their own device.
During the 2012-2013 school year, all eight school campuses will complete renovations to become totally wireless with enough
capacity for all students to be online at the same time with speed and efficiency. Schools that are already wireless will receive
more access points to increase speed and efficiency. Should the BYOD initiative be expanded to every classroom in all schools
in the future, the building infrastructure will be ready.
Technology director Dr. Connie Bain and her staff are working tirelessly to carefully design and monitor this pilot and the
school district’s state-of-the-art technology capacity. Curriculum directors Wes Gordon and Dr. Cindy Adams are working closely
with Dr. Bain, the principals, and the pilot teachers participating.
If you have questions about the BYOD pilot program, please talk to your school principal.

Letter from the Chamber
The Vestavia Hills Chamber of
Commerce would like to thank
everyone who came out for the I Love
America Summer Celebration Series
this past summer. We are blessed to
live in such a great community with
so many folks that volunteered to help
make these events successful. Also, without the financial
support of Chamber member businesses, we would be unable
to do events such as the I Love America series. Please check
out the Chamber website at www.vestaviahills.org and make
a point to thank these businesses for making these events
possible!
I hope that by now you have received your 2012 Vestavia
Hills Living magazine. We have had great feedback from the
community and would love to have any ideas from you that
we may consider for future issues. We have again posted an
electronic version of Vestavia Hills Living on the Chamber
website so please check us out online at www.vestaviahills.
org. The online version is searchable and you can also click
through to members’ web sites.
I am delighted to announce that the Chamber now has an
“app” for Vestavia Hills! Go to your smartphone’s app store
and download VH2GO to have Chamber businesses along
with near me mapping and special deals in the palm of your
hand. We are excited to be the first Chamber in the region to
offer this to our “on the go” community.
We will be hosting Viva Vestavia X on November 1. A special
thanks to Hollywood Pools for hosting this fun evening.
Please check the Chamber website at www.vestaviahills.
org for detailed information. This has become one of the
highlights of the year as area restaurants offer up a ‘taste of
Vestavia Hills.’
Please continue to support our area businesses. By working
together to keep our businesses successful, it helps keep our
property values high and provides funding for our schools,
police, fire and public works. Together. A Better Future for
Vestavia Hills.

The Parks and Recreation Foundation, Parks and

introduce the “Partners in Healthy Living Campaign.” It
will fund an exciting 3-part plan that includes the Sicard
Hollow Athletic Fields, Sicard Hollow Community Park
and the next phase of development at McCallum Park
and Greenway. Together, these three parts offer healthy
recreational opportunities for all residents, regardless of
age or activity level.
and improved Greenway paved with crushed stone that
will provide a 3-mile loop for walking and running.
Athletic Complex. With the four all-weather synthetic
grass athletic fields, we will have the ability to host
football, soccer, lacrosse and rugby games and events.
This impressive complex has recently received: (1)
the “Outstanding Facility Award of the Year” from the
Alabama Recreation and Parks Association, and (2) the
“Outstanding Outdoor Multi-Field Facility of the Year
Award” from the American Sports Builders Association.
As of mid July 2012, the Foundation and Campaign
Cabinet have raised $1.3 million toward this goal. The
Foundation has received more than 100 pledges with
lead gifts from Buffalo Rock (Lee Family), the McCallum
Family, the Belcher Family and the Vestavia Hills Soccer
Club setting the pace.
Excellent Campaign Progress. The total project
cost is $7.6 million. Funding from the City of Vestavia
Hills and a Public Minefield Reclamation program in
the amount of $4.6 million leave a balance of $3 million
(Phase 1: $2 million; Phase 2: $1 million) to be raised by
the community.
Multi-Use Community Park. The remaining two-thirds
of the Sicard Hollow site (approximately 40 acres) will
make this space a “destination” for all within reasonable
driving distance. The plan includes: amphitheater for
concerts and other events, 1.5-mile crushed stone fitness
trail with workout stations, children’s playground,
fenced dog park, splash park, disc golf course, a large
picnic pavilion and acres of green space.
McCallum Park and Greenway Expansion. The plan
includes two bridges across Little Shades Creek that will
double the usable area of the Park, and an expanded

Letter from the Superintendent
A Season of Promise
schools. VHHS principal Cas McWaters welcomes Brad Hayn as a
new assistant principal. Brad was formerly a Shelby County high
school administrator.
Faculties around the district also continue to grow. This
August, we welcomed 60 new teachers. These intrepid educators
participated in a week of new teacher orientation and excitedly
learned about our interactive classrooms with their Promethean
Boards, laptop computers, class websites, iNow, and school safety.
The district will provide master teacher instructional coaches for
each of these new teachers to help them navigate their entire
first year in the district through the Legendary Teacher Initiative.
Fueling our season of promise are the students who walked
through our school doors on August 20. They were ready to
learn, and I thank all the parents for helping the children to
positively anticipate the new year. Working towards our Strategic
Plan goal to help 100 percent of students meet or exceed the
highest standards of learning in the country, Vestavia schools
begin teaching the new Alabama College and Career Readiness
standards (also known as the Common Core) in mathematics for
K-12. The School Board carefully planned district budgets during
the economic downturn and was able to provide new math
textbooks in every school to meet the new learning expectations
in math.
Last, our season of promise continues with a new pilot
program at every campus: the Bring Your Own Device pilot. Top
ranking schools around the country are experimenting with
strengthening classroom instruction by allowing students to bring
their iPads, Nooks, Kindles, iPods and other devices to school
for instructional purposes. Vestavia is joining that experiment.
We want to start small this year to ensure effective procedures
are developed to safeguard children while supporting learning.
Several classrooms at each campus will participate in the pilot.
In 2012-2013, we will complete the task of making every VHCS
school wireless with enough connection strength that more than
7,000 students and faculty could be online at the same time with
speed and efficiency. We hope to expand the BYOD program to
all classes around the district in the future, but only after careful
analysis of the challenges and successes that stream from the
pilot program.
Parents, students, and teachers are the three vital elements
of every school district. The combined enthusiasm of the three
groups should fill us all with that sense of promise for a wonderful
new school year.
A season of promise in a year of growth—an
accurate way to describe this new school
year. After a longer than usual summer
vacation, our school doors opened on
August 20, and we greeted a record number
of students to Vestavia Hills City Schools.
New faces bring promise to our schools.
We welcome Assistant Superintendent
Sheila Phillips. Her professional experience
is vast and relevant. She has worked as a
special education teacher in Homewood schools, as a districtlevel early childhood program director in Cullman City Schools,
and as a school administrator at Cullman City High School and
Vestavia Hills High School. Sheila has enjoyed spending time
at all our schools this summer as she transitioned into her job
and office.
Ty Arendall has moved from leading Vestavia Hills Elementary
Cahaba Heights to leading Vestavia Hills Elementary Liberty
Park as principal. In addition to directing instruction at Cahaba
Heights for several years, Ty has also previously worked as a
school administrator in Homewood and Shelby County. A dad
with two young sons at East and wife April teaching at Central, Ty
gains perspectives from three schools as he leads VHELP.
Dr. Kay Cooper will welcome students, parents, and staff this
year as principal of Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights.
Kay has spent the past six years as assistant principal of Vestavia
Hills Elementary East. Prior to that, Kay worked as a teacher in
Jefferson County and Hoover and as a school administrator in
Shelby County. Kay began her teaching career at Cahaba Heights
and looks forward to bringing that sense of history and pride to
her building.
Three new assistant principals also join the district this year.
Kellie Wigley joins the faculty at Vestavia Hills Elementary School
Central to help Principal Marian Humphries. Kellie is a former
guidance counselor at Central. Cindy Echols has been named the
new assistant principal at Vestavia Hills Elementary East to work
with Principal Mark Richardson and the faculty there. Cindy
is a former teacher and school administrator with Homewood
