Welcome
Dear Friends, Artists, Colleagues and Music Lovers,
What could be a more prestigious year than one celebrating the
Diamond Jubilee while the London Olympics dominate world attention?
Welcome to our 28th festival celebrating great British composers
through the centuries.
We open in the Coronation Hall with a rare performance of the
Hiawatha Trilogy from the pens of Coleridge Taylor and Longfellow.
Gathering momentum we can relish astronomer Herschel’s music and
costume with the 18th Century Concert Orchestra in Keswick, and
appreciate the night stars over Derwent Water with Andrew Newsam.
Paul Lewis will take us into the creative world of Schubert whose music
flowed effortlessly and crossed all dream-lines. Ben Johnson, tenor,
will introduce us to Victorian/Edwardian lady composers mingling with
Purcell, Schubert and Britten.
New collaborations include the Chilingirians, Benjamin Frith and Ben
Johnson. Explore new works between Bach and Brahms with Yuko Inoue
and Carole Presland.
Christoph Richter features Ethel Smyth’s cello sonata.
The Gould Piano Trio and the Škampa Quartet programmes promise
riches. I Fagiolini take us from Byrd to Britten in Kendal Parish Church,
while Jonathan Scott’s brilliant programme from Handel to Widor
displays the qualities of its two organs.

Paul Ryan NARRATOR
Carver Church, Windermere
When a handsome Prince asks for the beautiful
Princess’s hand in marriage, the evil Witch Queen sets
him three seemingly impossible tasks to see if he is
worthy of marrying her daughter. If he should fail, then
he will die! While the Prince has brought with him four
faithful servants, it is the audience’s decision alone
which will determine the Prince’s fate.
LDSM 2012 opens with Coleridge-Taylor’s setting of
Longfellow’s narrative poem, ‘The Song of Hiawatha’.
Once the most popular choral works in England after
the ‘Messiah’, with regular ‘Prom’ performances under
Sir Malcolm Sargeant, the trilogy has close connections
with Cumbria. An early performance in 1901 at the Mary
Wakefield Festival was conducted by the composer.
This surging tuneful music reflects the
joys and pains of the Native
Americans.
A Pre-Concert talk by David Hunt will
be given in the Supper Room at 5pm.

Today’s three concerts explore a key strand in this
year’s Festival – the emergence of the national voice in
music. This midday concert brings together three LDSM
resident artists. Trios from masters of the chamber music
repertoire frame the performance of Kodály’s duo, which
expresses the composer’s impressions of the high Alps
and his forebodings of the First World War, along with a
companion piece commissioned from John Manduell. A
compelling programme in one of our favourite venues.

Many audience members will still recall the Enescu

performed by the combined forces of the Chilingirian
and Belcea quartets. The second quartet performed this
evening reflects national folk music of the composer’s
native Romania, and is widely regarded as one of the
crowning glories of his chamber music output. Framed
by the Classical authors of chamber music, which also
influenced Enescu as performer, this performance

Christoph Richter, one of the most sought-after cellists in

infrequently-heard Strauss cello sonata, and an even
rarer performance of a sonata by Ethel Smyth – an
active Suffragette and one of Britain’s foremost female
composers.

Theatre by the Lake, Keswick
The Mask Behind the Face is new cabaret taking the
performers and the audience on a journey spanning
Paris, Berlin, London, and two World Wars which
changed the world. Composers and poets, Satie
and Hypsa, Weill and Brecht, Britten and Auden
highlighted the more salubrious environment of the
cabaret bar. They created a new genre for a generation
voracious for excitement, new sounds, rhythms and
colours. The perfect tonic for a changing society.
