Welcome to Bielefeld
Welcome to Bielefeld, the multi-faceted, lively university town
with a high quality of life at the Teutoburg Forest. Bielefeld
is the economic and cultural centre of East Westfalia-Lippe,
one of the most dynamic economic regions in Europe. Around
330,000 inhabitants make Bielefeld one of the 20 major cities
in Germany.
Founded as a market town around 1214, Bielefeld has
developed “along the linen thread” into a modern city. The
Linenweaver Statue, the Steam Engine, and the Ravensberg
Spinning Mill are landmarks of this development. Historic
industrial buildings shape the present townscape alongside
extensive green belts and modern architecture.
Situated within the hills of the Teutoburg Forest, Bielefeld
provides a wide variety of leisure opportunities. The thriving
cultural scene offers an events programme full of contrasts
and highlights.
Shopping, education, leisure, culture or sports – discover
Bielefeld as a friendly town of green spaces. This brochure
lists ideas, facts and figures, events addresses and other
information.
Enjoy your stay!

Gain insights and glimpse into almost 800 years of eventful
town history.
Sparrenburg Castle
Built around 1240, Sparrenburg Castle is Bielefeld’s imposing landmark. The tower gives a unique panoramic view
over the city and the surrounding countryside. The castle’s
casemates, an extensive network of underground passages,
are well worth exploring on a guided tour.
Linen Weaver Statue
The Linen Weaver Statue was created by Hans
Perathoner in 1909 to
symbolise the economic
development of the town
and its close relationship
with linen processing. The
Linen Weaver and Sparrenburg Castle are the symbolic
landmarks of Bielefeld.
Old Town Hall
Built around 1904, and
incorporating a blend of
historical styles, the Old
Town Hall and the City
Theatre form an architectural entity. A model of Bielefeld
in 1650 is on display in the foyer.
Linen Weaver Statue
Ravensberg Park
The historic buildings of the former Ravensberg Spinning
Mill house a variety of cultural venues. In addition to the
Huelsmann Museum exhibiting masterworks of European arts
and crafts, there are an adult education centre, the History

“Education made in Bielefeld” means living and learning in
a young, dynamic centre. With around 30,000 students, an
internationally renowned university (pictured above), and
seven excellent further education colleges, Bielefeld is a town
of science and research, and the leading tertiary education
location in East Westfalia-Lippe. More than 100 primary
and secondary schools, occupational colleges and training
institutions supplement the broad spectrum of state general
education.
Special attractions are the centrally situated Ishara sports
and leisure pool complex, and the climbing park at Johannisberg. Many more facilities enable the enthusiast to pursue
sports and leisure activities like badminton, tennis, golf and
horse riding.
Leisure and sports
Bielefeld nestles within a unique range of hills. The heights
of the Teutoburg Forest stretch from the southeast to the
northwest, reaching into the heart of the town. Criss-crossing
Bielefeld, 580 km of walking trails encourage long-distance
hikes or gentle strolls.
Favourite destinations are the Olderdissen Wildlife Park with
over 450 animals of 100 species, the Botanical Garden with its
extensive collection of plants from all over the world, and the
Obersee Lake in the district of Schildesche.
More active pursuits are available in over 100 sports facilities.
The SchücoArena is home to First Division football club DSC
Arminia Bielefeld. The large multi-purpose sports complex at
Seidensticker Halle often hosts capacity events. Further sports
venues include an ice rink and many open air and indoor public swimming pools.
