sky on top of Katsuyama Hill
(132 meters above sea level),
and is adored by locals as the
symbol of Matsuyama City. The
main plaza is well known for
cherry blossoms and has long
been a place of recreation and

Matsuyama Castle was originally
built by Yoshiaki Kato, who was
one of the seven spear warriors
who successfully fought at the

Matsuyama Castle Ninomaru Historical Garden is roughly divided
into two sections; namely the site of Outer Palace and the site of
Inner Palace. In the outer palace area, the former room layout is now
represented by citrus trees, grasses and flowers that come from
various places in this region. The Inner Palace side is called ''Ryusuien'' (or Water Flowing Garden), and water and sand are used to
show the former room layout. The ''Rinsen Garden'' (or Forest
Fountain Garden) expresses ''wabi'' (quiet refinement)
and ''sabi'' (elegant simplicity).

Sadakoto Hisamatsu, the 15th generation lord of the former
Matsuyama domain family built this historic steel-reinforced
concrete building as his residence in Matsuyama. It was
designed and built by Shichiro Kine, a well-known architect.
It is used as an Ehime Prefectural Museum Branch, which
periodically organizes special exhibitions.

About 10 minutes by bus from JR Matsuyama
Station or about 9 km from Matsuyama IC.
This is a comprehensive reference library
specializing in Iyo kasuri (splashed-pattern
textiles), a traditional folk art product of
Ehime. It exhibits ancient textile weaving
looms and dyeing pots, and also holds
demonstrations and sells products. You can
see the entire process of producing Iyo
kasuri. The indigo dyeing experience course
and souvenir corner are also very popular.
You can use the Botchan train to conveniently
travel around Matsuyama.
The train used to clatter around the city with Shiki, Soseki and many other people on
board.
The Botchan train was a favorite sight on the Matsuyama Plain from the old Meiji period
to the middle of the Showa era. It has just been brought back to life in this 21st-century
castle town.

Where to take good photographs of the
Botchan train
The name ''Botchan train'' comes from a popular novel called ''Botchan''
written by Soseki Natsume. It is thought that this novel is based on his
actual experiences when he took up his post as English teacher at
Matsuyama Middle School. In the novel, there is a scene in which
Botchan, the leading character, rides on ''a small, matchbox-like train '' to
the middle school at which he was working. This is the train that we now
call the ''Botchan train.''

You can see the train make an unusual turn at Matsuyama-shi
Station. Also at Ohtemachi Station, the intra-city streetcar
railroad crosses the suburban railroad, which is quire rare in
Japan!

Shoshuji Temple in Suehiromachi, was
built from the former residence of Shiki
Masaoka. Inside the Shiki-do, a great
number of his writings and personal
effects are exhibited. There is also a
stone monument closely associated with
Kyoshi Takahama, a haiku poet.
Matsuyama is well known for its haiku
poems/poets. There are also graves of
many generations of the Masaoka family.

History of Dogo Onsen Spa
Seki Museum
Dogo Onsen Spa is proud of its 3,000-year history as the oldest spa in Japan. It
was called the hot spring of Iyo and the hot spring of Nikitatsu in ancient times.
Since 645 it has been called Dogo Onsen Spa. There is an interesting legend in
which a white heron suffering from wounds to its legs found a hot spring gushing
out from the rocks. When it soaked its legs in the hot spring, its wounds were
completely cured, and it flew away in good spirits. Local people who saw this
were mystified and tried taking a bath themselves. They found that the water
refreshed them and helped them to recover from their fatigue, while sick people
were completely cured within moments. This is how people started to use the hot
spring.

This is an old-fashioned and distinctive wooden
three-storied public bathhouse. It has two types
of hot spring; the larger Kaminoyu hot spring
and the smaller Tama hot spring, and also five
bath rooms. In the Shinro-kaku on the top floor,
a clock drum is hung from the ceiling. The
sound of this drum was selected by Japanese
people as one of the top 100 soundscapes that
they want to preserve. The clock rings at 6:00 in
the morning, at noon and at 6:00 in the evening.
【Yushinden】
This is a special bath exclusively built
for the members of the Imperial Family
in 1899. It consists of the entrance
room, the attendants' room and the
throne room, and next to it there is a
secret room for security personnel. It is
not possible for you to use this bath, but
when on a guided tour (for a fee), the
attendant will explain about it.

This literary museum comprehensively
surveys literary works by Soseki Natsume and
other writers who hailed from Matsuyama. The
main exhibits of the museum center on Shiki
Masaoka, who is known as the pioneer of
modern haiku poems.

Very near the intra-city streetcar ''Dogo Koenmae
Station" or about 8 km from Matsuyama IC.
Since the park was established in 1886, it has
been the major cherry blossom viewing spot in the
city. It is also used for recreation and relaxation by
both local citizens and tourists. Based on an
archaeological study of the site, the old samurai
residence has been restored, and articles that
were unearthed are on exhibit. In this park you can
learn about history while taking an enjoyable walk.

enshrined inside is said to have been made
by the Unkei school of sculptors.
Yu Jinja or Hot Spring Shrine enshrines
Ohkuninonushi no Mikoto and Sukunahikona no
Mikoto as the guardian gods of Dogo Onsen Spa.

● Accommodation --- In Japanese style hotels, it is not rude to walk along hallways, to go to the bath or to have dinner wearing just your yukata and/or zori
slippers. In Western style hotels, do not walk around outside your room wearing a yukata and zori, but in hotels with hot spring facilities, it is OK. Please ask the staff
at your hotel if you are unsure.
● When taking a bath --- One person should use only one basket or one locker in the locker room. In a big common tub, tie up your hair if it is long (e.g. with a
rubber band), so that your hair does not go into the water. Before entering the bathtub, be sure to clean yourself with warm water. Do not go into the bathtub wearing
your bath towel or swimming suit. Do not dip your towel into the bathtub, as it is unhygienic. Before you return to the locker room, be sure to dry yourself properly.

treasure by Matsuyama City. It is said that the empress of
Emperor Tenmu presented a sapling to this temple in
appreciation for being healed after she prayed here.
Since then the cherry tree has been known by this name.

Botchan Dango (Dumpling)
''One evening, I went to a place called
Dogo and ate dango. This Dogo is a town
famous for its hot spring, and it is well
known that the dango shop I dropped into
serves a very tasty dango, which I found
quite satisfactory.'' The dango is inspired
by this section of the novel ''Botchan.''
Oranges and orange juice
Oranges are a specialty of Ehime, and
locals take pride in achieving the highest
production volume in Japan. The juice is
made from fresh oranges, and is popular
throughout the country.
Tart
This tart is made with red bean paste amply flavored
with yuzu oranges, a local specialty of Ehime, which is
rolled in a large spiral-like form. This was derived from an
original idea of Lord Sadayuki Matsudaira.
Jakoten
Jakoten is made by frying fresh
ground fish meat, which is rich in
calcium. Savor the catch from the
bountiful Seto Inland Sea.
Goshiki Somen
Usuzumi Yokan
Goshiki Somen or "five-colored thin
noodles" is Matsuyama's local specialty. The recipe has been handed
down through the generations for
about 360 years. The five-colored
somen is colored entirely with natural
materials.
This was named after the well-known
''Usuzumizakura'' or gray-colored cherry
blossoms of Saihoji Temple located in
Shimoidai, Matsuyama City. The white beans
sprinkled inside represent cherry blossom
pedals fluttering down to the ground.
Hinokaburazuke
This is a beautiful scarlet colored pickled
turnip. Local people use this on a great
variety of occasions ranging from
flamboyant New Year's dishes to a simple
bowl of rice with green tea.
Shoyumochi
Jizake, or local sake
Refined sake, brewed using clear and
transparent water originating from the high
Shikoku Mountains, has an excellent
reputation throughout Japan.
This is a local cake with a homely taste,
and it has a simple but irresistible soy
sauce flavor.
Iyo Kasuri
This is one of the three most
prized kasuri or splashed-pattern
textiles in Japan. It has long been
loved on account of its rustic
texture, cotton strength and
beauty of its indigo blue color.
There is a vast array of products
including not only textiles, but
also bags and clothes.
Traditional handicrafts
Hime daruma
It is said that Empress Jinko once stayed at Dogo Onsen a long
time ago, where she became pregnant. She gave birth to a child in
the province of Chikuzen, who later became the Emperor Ohjin. A
Hime daruma doll was made in commemoration, a pretty little
child wrapped in the Empress's crimson-red flossy garment.
Tobe Porcelain
Ittobori, or single chisel
engraving
Only a single chisel is used in this
engraving style. Iyo Hina dolls, which are
well known for being made with Ittobori
technique, are tinted by utilizing the
warmness of the wood. The dolls have
adorable features.
Bamboo handicrafts
These handicrafts are individually woven by
skilled craftsmen. It is said that the production of these bamboo wares originally
started when Prince Shotoku came to Dogo
Onsen. He taught the local people how to
weave baskets after he saw a great number
of bamboo forests nearby.
This is a traditional Japanese industrial art,
and has been designated as a local
specialty of the prefecture. The porcelain,
the natural color of which is tinted with a
cobalt blue color, is prized not only as artistic
work but has also long been used for
household utensils.
Rakuzan yaki
pottery
According to legend, Rakuzan
pottery started when Sadanaga Matsudaira, the Lord of
Matsuyama domain, put some
crabs into his garden pottery
kiln. The powerful and expressive workmanship is directly
due to the daily efforts and
research of the craftsmen.
