7 CHS Students Selected for GSP
June 13, 2016
Corbin High School had seven junior students selected to
participate in the 2016 Governor’s Scholars Program.
Juniors Tucker Jewell, Benjamin Childers, Cody Evans,
Dustyn Sams, Cole Moore, Grace Moses, and Meghan
Wynn will be attending the program this summer. The
Governor's Scholars Program (GSP) is a summer residential
program that recognizes exceptional high school students
across Kentucky.
In order to participate in GSP, students must be nominated
by their high schools and then compete on a state-wide
level. Selection for the program is highly competitive. The application process requires an academic profile including difficulty
of course load, Grade Point Average (GPA), and at least one standardized test score. In addition to the academic profile students
must outline all extracurricular activities, a volunteer service history, and a list of job positions held. A teacher and community
recommendation as well as an original writing entry is also required.
Students selected attend the program free of charge. The office of the Governor, the Kentucky State Legislature, and private
enterprise provides the financial support for the program. Due to excellent support, the program has grown from 230 students
in 1983 to more than 1,000 students today. The students attending the program will be housed on one of three host campuses,
Morehead University, Murray State University, or Northern Kentucky University.
The curriculum for the summer sessions include general studies to challenge the scholars, discussion based small group sessions
to teach respectful debate, and a focus area of study selected by each student during the application process. The program also
consists of several speakers, carefully planned field trips, and special events.
Numerous Kentucky Colleges and Universities offer scholarships to GSP students. The students are awarded four-year tuition at
many schools as well as other special scholarships to assist with college expenses.
The Governor’s Scholars Program was established in 1983 to enhance Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders.
The program provides academic and personal growth through the balance of a strong liberal arts program with a full cocurricular and residential life experience.

national certification for its Project Lead
The Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science
Program. PLTW Biomedical Science
introduces students to medicine and
human body systems, preparing them

demonstrating a commitment to PLTW’s national standards.
“We’ve seen how PLTW inspires students to think critically and problem solve,” said Corbin High School Principal
John Crawford. “We are extremely proud to be PLTW certified.”
As part of the certification process, Crawford and a group composed of teachers, staff, students, and members of the
community submitted a self-assessment of the school’s implementation of PLTW Biomedical Science, followed by a
site visit from a PLTW-affiliated team. PLTW’s team met with teachers, school administrators, counselors, students,
and community members who serve on Corbin High School’s PLTW Partnership Team. The PLTW-affiliated team
recognized Corbin High School as one of their best certification visits ever.
“Congratulations to Corbin High School, and thank you for your commitment to students,” said PLTW President and
CEO Vince Bertram. “We look forward to continuing to work together to prepare students to thrive in our evolving
world.”
Corbin high School’s biomedical program has nearly doubled in size with 157 students enrolled for next school year.

CMS Partners with Garden Club For Plant It Pink!
The Corbin Middle School Junior Beta Club partnered with the Corbin Garden Club to Plant it Pink! Plant it Pink is an event
sponsored by the Corbin Garden Club that involves planting pink flowers to promote breast cancer awareness.
The students worked with Garden Club Member Carcille Burchette for several hours to complete the project. They picked a
location at Corbin Middle School for the flower bed, measured it out, planted, and mulched the flowers. Burchette also got the
opportunity to visit with the students to explain the importance of the event.
“Carcille presented the idea to the middle school to get our students involved in gardening activities, environmental awareness,
and community service,” Corbin Middle School Media Specialist Jennifer Gordon said. “She is a former middle school teacher
here at CMS, so it is natural for her to want to partner with the middle school for community service projects.”
In addition to being a former Corbin Middle School teacher, Burchette is also a current Corbin Board of Education member. She
knows the middle school students well and enjoys working with them. During the project Burchette taught the students how to
care for plants, how use shovels and gardening tools, and even included a short geometry lesson.
Seventeen seventh grade Junior Beta students participated in the project. An official sign will be placed near the flower bed to
inform visitors that the planting is for Plant It Pink and Breast Cancer Awareness.
