A MESSAGE From the Committee Chair
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I would like to extend a warm welcome to each of you taking part in the Dive-In
University Series South 2016!
In this Holy Year that began this past December, Pope Francis declared as a Year of
Mercy. So it is appropriate that the theme that brings us together is Seeing with Eyes of
Mercy. I hope that in the next few weeks of Dive-In presentations you will come and be
challenged to see the mercy of God not as an occasional happenstance but as the context
in which we live.
May your participation in the Dive-In Series be a moment of grace and spiritual growth,
in which you encounter the riches of God's never ending mercy!

2016 Theme Reflection
On March 13, 2015, the second anniversary of his election as
the Successor of Peter, Pope Francis announced the
Extraordinary Holy Year. This is the first Holy Year to celebrate
not an anniversary of some kind, but the attribute of God the
Father which is most exalted in both the Old and the New
Testaments: His Mercy.
Mercy is not an abstract term, but one which expresses the face
of God, the daily and concrete actions of Jesus of Nazareth, and
the form by which to give convincing expression of the
credibility of the Church. This means that we are each of us
called to adhere to the signs of God wherever and in whatever
way they are manifested. As the Pope states: “The Church makes
herself a servant of this love [of Christ] and mediates it to all
people: a love that forgives and expresses itself in the gift of
oneself. Consequently, wherever the Church is present, the
mercy of the Father must be evident. In our parishes,
communities, associations and movements, in a word, wherever
there are Christians, everyone should find an oasis of mercy” (MV 12).

2016 DIVE-IN Courses
1-1 Inclusiveness in the Body of Christ: Join the conversation on what it means to be inclusive in the Body of
Christ? How can we join together to foster a sense of inclusiveness and true welcoming in our families, parishes and
communities?
David Kennedy
Mon., February 22; 7:30-9:00 pm
American Martyrs—Manhattan Beach, St. Kateri Room
1-2
Rudy Finke
Tue., February 23; 7:30-9:00 pm
St. Margaret Mary—Lomita, Church
2-2 Forgiveness – Merciful love in action!: Pope Francis calls it an imperative and “the instrument to attain
serenity of heart” (MV). But even he says: “How hard it seems to forgive!” (MV) It is never easy, because we are hurt.
Because we feel anger and helplessness and that is a natural reaction, especially when it was someone close to us. The
challenge is how to move on with and through those feelings, not denying them or running away. We will be looking on
ways to forgive from the perspectives of the faith and psychology, from personal testimony and from the words of Pope
Francis. We will explore how to forgive and how to find healing and peace for our hearts.
Dominic Gnirs
Tue., February 23; 7:30-9:00 pm
St. James School O’Gorman Center-Torrance
2-3 Mercy and Mission: Based on Biblical passages and official teachings of the Church this presentation will
discuss briefly the virtue of mercy, a fruit of the theological virtue – charity, as the core of the Gospel message and how it
is not and cannot be opposed to truth. It will also aim to discuss the nature of the Church as missionary, in a particular
way, as reflected in the teachings of Pope Francis.

workshop will focus on spiritual and psychological attitudes and practices that can help those in their middle
years to continue to choose life, that is, to live "with soul." Some themes to be treated are: fostering a deeper connection

Church governance, mean for the exercise of authority in the Church?

12-2 A Year of Mercy But for Whom? Mercy and the Law for American Catholics: We are midway
through Pope Francis' Year of Mercy. He has called for the Church (that is, all of us who are baptized) to be instruments
of the mercy of God outside the church walls, to show others the loving face of God, especially those who are poor or
marginalized. Yet many Catholics feel reluctant to show any mercy at all to people they see as living outside of our
nation's laws, such as immigrants without legal papers, gang members, or those in prison. Why is law so important to
Americans? Has it become more important than mercy? What can Jesus and church tradition teach us?
