Downriver Vicariate Archdiocese of Detroit Sharing Christ In and Through the Church April 2015 News The Vicar’s Corner by Fr. William Promesso The center of our faith, the center on which all Christians agree, is the kerygma that Jesus is Risen, Jesus is Lord: Having beheld the Resurrection of Christ, let us worship the Holy Lord Jesus, the only Sinless One. We venerate Your Cross, O Christ and we praise and glorify Your Holy Resurrection. You are our God. We know no other than You, and we call upon Your Name. Come, all faithful, let us venerate the holy Resurrection of Christ for behold, through the Cross, joy has come to all the world. —Matins of the Resurrection Alleluia! He is risen indeed! These words express the amazing truth that we will celebrate on Easter. Who could have imagined that the King of the Universe would be crowned with thorns? Who could foresee a savior killed in such an ignoble way? Who could’ve conceived that God would love the world so much as to give his own life to sinners so as to free us from our own sins? Resurrection? Unthinkable! Yet here we are, celebrating the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the King and Savior of all. This celebration of the Paschal Mystery still escapes our full understanding, yet it is the reason for our hope. May this hope extend to you and those you love on the darkest and brightest days of this 50 day season of new life. Amen. Alleluia! The Downriver Vicariate Council meets on March 31 and will have a special presentation from the Director of the Office of Priestly Vocations, Fr. Tim Birney. As you know, Vocations is one of the seven mission priorities of the Archdiocese of Detroit, which we’ve spent the past several months studying one at a time. Fr. Birney will share how priestly vocations are developed in the family and the parish. We are all responsible to identify and support men who may be experiencing the Lord’s call to ministry as a priest. Parents and grandparents have the greatest influence, but so do truly happy and effective priests who serve as models and sources of encouragement. Which younger, single men do you see in church regularly? Have you talked to them about a life of service in the priesthood? You may be the person who plants a seed today that blossoms at his ordination years later! The VPC Executive Committee recently approved three grants: One for Catechist Education and two for Parish Missions/Retreats shared by three or more parishes. These all met the major criteria of encouraging inter-parish cooperation and focusing on one or more of the seven mission priorities. Happy Spring! Happy Easter! He is risen indeed! The purpose of the Tenebre service is to recreate the emotional aspects of the passion story; the betrayal, the abandonment, and agony of the events. It begins with the church in candlelight and as a reading is read, a candle is extinguished until the church is in near darkness. It ends with the words Christ uttered on the cross. Those last words we hear are very emotional. As we leave church we feel more than every, the sense of loss, as we wait for Christ to rise on Easter. Gabriel Richard Catholic High School John Paul II Catholic School Making Catholic Education an Affordable Investment For many families considering Catholic education, cost is an important factor. At Gabriel Richard Catholic High School, we seek to make Catholic education affordable for all of our families. Throughout the years, we have maintained one of the lowest rates of tuition in the entire Archdiocese while still providing a rigorous, faith-based education backed by results. Even in the most challenging of economic conditions, we have remained debt free, invested in the future, and on the cutting edge of educational technology. Last year alone, Gabriel Richard provided $150,000 in needbased tuition assistance to our families. Gabriel Richard provides merit-based scholarships to incoming freshmen who score in the 80th percentile and above on the High School Placement Test. Families who belong to a parish in the Archdiocese of Detroit may be eligible to receive an additional $500 toward high school tuition through the AOD Tuition Assistance Program. Gabriel Richard offers convenient payment plans including a 10-month or 12-month interest-free program through FACTS. Gabriel Richard offers a discount for families who have more than one child attending GR. How does Gabriel Richard compare? For the past several years, Gabriel Richard graduates have had a 100% college acceptance rate. Our average ACT composite scores consistently exceed both state and national averages. Of the 115 Advanced Placement tests taken by GR students last year, 89% had a score of 3 or above. Scoring well on an AP exam can allow students to earn college credit, which leads to substantial savings for parents. Gabriel Richard currently offers 12 AP courses. Gabriel Richard works closely with students to identify and obtain college scholarships. We currently have graduates who attend prestigious schools such as the University of Notre Dame and the University of Michigan for pennies a day. So far this year, our senior class has earned more than $2.5 million in scholarships. With smaller class sizes, individualized attention and a community built upon faith, knowledge and service, the value of a GR education will stretch well beyond graduation. Saturday, April 18, 2015 10am-12noon What if You Could Outsmart Alzheimer’s Presented by Carol Waarala, MSW, LMSW Alzheimer’s disease… researchers have been working for years to find a cure with no success. No one knows when it starts - or why - or how to stop it. Dementia of the Alzheimer’s type is NOT part of normal aging; but the number one risk of getting it is ADVANCING IN AGE. We can’t stop getting older, but we can protect our brain in many ways. While researchers race to find a cure, there are things we can do to reduce our risk, slow down the onset of the disease, or maybe even prevent it. This presentation will look at many ideas for reducing your risk for developing dementia and exploring healthy lifestyle choices that can protect your brain and body.
