CHARTERED 1957
Letter from President
Connections, Careers, Community . . . and my favorite "C" of the year CHRISTMAS!
Committee meetings are in full swing and your enthusiasm is paving the way for
great things in 2011. You have been receptive to change, yet passionate about
preserving what makes EWI unique. It reminds me of a family tradition that I
would like to share with you. Throughout my life, we would pile into the car the
day after Thanksgiving to spend the day selecting the perfect Christmas tree.
Mom insisted on a real tree, so we would bundle up and drive all over town visiting multiple lots. Dad would hold up the trees and my mom would inspect each
for fullness, freshness, height, and posture. Sometimes we would end up back at
the very first lot!
Our perfect tree would be tied on top of the car and my dad would drive home
slowly, although never slowly enough to please my mom. Dad would spend at
least an hour unloading the tree and putting shims underneath the legs of the
Dory Ward, PwC stand to make the tree appear straight. Then we would spend the evening watching him untangle lights, while using a few choice words in the process. Our eyes
would be brighter than the lights as he carefully wrapped them on the tree, starting from the inside near the
bottom of the trunk and working his way out and up. Invariably, we would stand back to admire his masterpiece, and a string of lights would go out! Dad would begin the painstaking process of locating that one bulb
that caused the entire strand to go dark.
One year, mom and dad allowed my sister and me to select the tree. At the ages of 5 and 4, this was a big
responsibility. We chose a bright RED flocked tree and thought it was the most gorgeous tree we had ever
seen! Mom decorated the tree with various delicate ornaments and silver icicles. The house was filled with
the aroma of a fresh cut tree and the floor displayed the daily evidence that the tree was real. On Christmas
Eve, my sister, brother and I left milk and cookies on the kitchen table and stayed awake as long as possible, hoping to hear or catch a glimpse of Santa Claus and his reindeer. The next morning, we rushed to the
tree to discover all of the gifts. It was a blur of tearing paper and discarding bows - and then a joyful day of
riding new bicycles and playing with new games, followed by a family dinner. Mom always left the tree up
through the New Year, so by the time it went to the street for trash pick up, our perfect tree had become a
dry, brown, prickly mess.
There have been many innovations that impact the tradition of the Christmas Tree. There are several options for lights - various sizes, shapes and colors. The fire risk is reduced and if one bulb goes out, the others miraculously remain lit! You can also take your discarded Christmas tree to Galveston for disposal on
the beach to help create sand dunes. Artificial trees look and feel more like the real thing. "Christmas Tree"
fragrance is sold in liquid and solid form. As an adult, I continued to honor the family tradition and purchased a real tree, even though prices were on the rise. My husband's allergies would flare up every year
upon the arrival of our perfect tree. In 2004, I reluctantly gave in to his pleas and decided to replace my
traditional, beloved Noble Fir with an artificial tree. It was a sad day . . . or so I thought.
Our tree is a 7-1/2 foot Victorian Pine, with frosted lights expertly wrapped around the branches. It can be
assembled in three easy steps. It turns slowly on a rotating stand so its beauty can be admired from all angles. It is usually decorated before Thanksgiving and can remain standing until well after the New Year.
With its sturdy limbs, my precious ornaments stay off of the floor. The funny thing is, after witnessing the
perfection, functionality, and ease of my artificial tree, Mom decided to purchase one, too!
This year, my niece will leave milk and cookies for Santa and try to stay up late on Christmas Eve. Gifts will
be piled under the tree, I will play with my new iPad and we will gather for a family dinner. I have come to
realize that changing the tree did not change the meaning or feeling of Christmas. The tree is merely a symbol. The true joy, spirit and peace of the season remain in my heart, a tradition that will last a lifetime. As
you honor your favorite holiday traditions, I wish you all a very blessed and Merry Christmas!

NOVEMBER MEETING Recap (continued)
Membership elected three representatives to serve on the 2010-2011 Nominating Committee.
Congratulations to the following representatives:
Mildred Loyd, representing Mustang Machinery Company, Ltd.
Kori Peters, representing BMC Software, Inc.
Sheryl Taylor, representing Mischer Investments, L.P.
Dory Ward introduced our guest speaker, Heather Rumley, Managing Partner, ClearWater Performance
Group. She had a very informative handout that we referred to throughout her presentation. We first did
an exercise, “What Do I Spend My Time Doing”. Most of the group had circled more than ten (10) categories. Heather stressed the importance of engaging your audience and making them feel valued.
Which is more important? How you say it or How it was said.
Verbal is 7% of your impact
Vocal is 38% of your impact
Visual is 55% of your impact
Heather introduced us to body, breathing and vocal warm-up‟s. We can all agree that this gave us a
perfect opportunity to relax. We were instructed to pick a favorite song or nursery rhyme and repeat it
several times using high pitch, low pitch, slow pitch, fast pitch. It was now time for audience participation. Many thanks to our volunteers below for demonstrating different techniques on their favorite pick:
Dory Ward – “The Star Spangled Banner”
Elizabeth Rushing – “Happy Birthday”
Terri Lemons – “Jack Be Nimble”
Many thanks to Bobbie Pritchett, Margery Reinheardt and the staff of the Hilton Houston Post Oak who
provided the venue and delightful menu, Kathy Hibbard and Patti Strawther for working together
arranging the event, Mary Sue Patronella for creating the Early Bird Notice and handling many other
details, PSAV for sponsoring the audio equipment and A Perfect Touch for sponsoring the linens and
centerpieces.

ROLLS OUT STRATEGIC PLAN
The journey of the 2010 – 2011 Corporate
Board began in late October at their retreat as
they identified the path for EWI’s future. The
Board accepted the challenge to get ―back to
basics‖ as they updated EWI’s Corporate
Strategic Plan to direct their path of service,
while casting vision for the coming years. The
strategic plan is a working document that will be
adjusted to best accommodate the needs of its
firms, representatives, and Chapters as
necessary.
As you review the strategic plan, the Corporate
Board invites you to contact Corporate
President Sharon Bennett, or Vice President/
