unity festival
People sometimes ask me why we started Unity. Truth is, it’s
difficult to explain succinctly why we do it. It’s exhausting.
We are a small company and in reality we don’t have enough
staff or resources to be doing this. So why are we?
By way of answer let me tell you about an event I witnessed
while visiting Danza Mobile in Spain. First some
background. Spain has wide-scale unemployment; 50% in
some areas of Andalucía. In order to claim unemployment
benefits, young unemployed people have to sign up to
various training initiatives, including a cultural element
which usually involves a theatre trip. This explains why
400 young unemployed people were herded in to see
Danza Mobile’s Cierra Los Ojos y Mirame in a small
municipal theatre in Andalucía, the night I was there.
As the lights went down there was uproar, shouting and
screaming, and it dawned on me that most of the audience
had probably never been in a theatre. Slowly the noise
subsided, until complete silence fell when Reyes entered.
Reyes is a dancer with learning disability, who dances
flamenco with the beauty and passion of anyone who has
5
been dancing this way since childhood, with the stage
presence to match it. As Reyes finished her mesmerising
routine the place erupted. People jumped up and shouts of
‘Ole’ passed around the auditorium. This had nothing to
do with Reyes’ disability. It was simply a reaction to her
performance, without prejudice and without patronisation.
By the end, the whole crowd were on their feet cheering
and stamping for ten minutes, many – including me leaving the theatre with tears in their eyes. It was one of
the most incredible theatrical experiences I have ever
witnessed. This audience came with no expectations and
gwyl undod
were totally blown away.
So, did the inclusive nature of the show change their
perception of the work? The answer is no…..and yes.
The audience loved the show simply because it was
a great piece of art, but I think the whole experience
was enhanced because it included incredible dancers
and musicians both with and without disability.
This is why we run Unity. We want to give a platform
to work that has the quality to impress any audience,
but which also reflects a commitment to inclusivity
with all the depth and colour that this brings.
We are also passionate about challenging views of
disability. I love the fact that of those 400 young
unemployed Spanish many will now have a new perception
of disability. Even if they are not consciously aware of it,
somewhere in their
minds, when they
think of learning
disability they will
think of Reyes and
her beautiful
dancing.
We hope that you
enjoy this years’
festival as much
as we enjoy bringing
it to you.

Festival Director

Mae pobl yn aml yn gofyn i mi pam y gwnaethom
ddechrau Undod. Y gwir yw, mae'n anodd egluro'n fras
pam rydym yn gwneud hyn. Mae'n waith blinedig! Cwmni
bach ydym ac mewn gwirionedd nid oes gennym ddigon
o staff nac adnoddau i wneud hyn. Felly pam trafferthu?
Er mwyn ceisio ateb hyn gadewch i mi sôn wrthych am
ddigwyddiad a welais wrth ymweld â Danza Mobile yn
Sbaen. Y cefndir yn gyntaf. Mae diweithdra yn Sbaen
ar raddfa fawr; 50% mewn rhai ardaloedd yn Andalucía.
Er mwyn hawlio budd-daliadau diweithdra, mae'n rhaid
i bobl ifanc ddi-waith ymrwymo i sawl menter hyfforddi,
gan gynnwys elfen ddiwylliannol sydd fel arfer yn cynnwys
ymweld â'r theatr. Mae hyn yn egluro pam y trefnwyd
i 400 o bobl ifanc ddi-waith fynd i weld Cierra Los Ojos
y Mirame gan Danza Mobile mewn theatr ddinesig
fechan yn Andalucía, ar y noson roeddwn i yno.

yna cafwyd tawelwch llwyr
pan ddaeth Reyes i'r llwyfan.
Dawnsiwr yw Reyes sydd
ag anabledd dysgu, ac sy'n

un prydferthwch ac
angerdd a fyddai gan
unrhyw un sydd wedi bod
yn dawnsio fel hyn ers yn
blentyn, ac mae ganddi
bresenoldeb llwyfan
trawiadol hefyd. Wrth i
Reyes orffen ei pherfformiad mesmeraidd ffrwydrodd y lle.
Neidiodd pobl ar eu traed gan weiddi 'Ole' o bob rhan o'r
awditoriwm. Nid anabledd Reyes oedd yn gyfrifol am hyn.
Ymateb syml i'w pherfformiad ydoedd, heb fod yn
rhagfarnllyd nac yn nawddoglyd. Erbyn y diwedd, roedd
y dorf gyfan ar ei thraed yn bloeddio ac yn curo'r llawr â'u
traed am ddeg munud, llawer - yn cynnwys fi - yn gadael
y theatr â dagrau yn eu llygaid. Roedd yn un o'r
perfformiadau theatrig mwyaf anhygoel rwyf erioed wedi ei
weld. Daeth y gynulleidfa yno heb unrhyw ddisgwyliadau
ond cafodd y perfformiad effaith fawr ar bawb a oedd yno.
Felly, a wnaeth natur gynhwysol y sioe newid amgyffred
y gynulleidfa o'r gwaith? Yr ateb yw naddo.... a do. Roedd
y gynulleidfa wedi dwli ar y sioe am ei bod yn ddarn
gwych o gelfyddyd, ond rwy'n credu i'r profiad cyfan gael
ei gyfoethogi am fod y sioe yn cynnwys dawnswyr
a cherddorion anhygoel ag anableddau a rhai hebddynt.
Dyma pam rydym yn cynnal Undod. Rydym am roi llwyfan
i waith sydd â'r ansawdd i greu argraff ar unrhyw
gynulleidfa, ond sydd hefyd yn adlewyrchu ymrwymiad
i gynwysoldeb gyda'r dyfnder a'r lliw a ddaw yn sgîl hyn.
Credwn yn angerddol hefyd mewn herio barn pobl am
anabledd. Rwy'n hoffi'r ffaith bod gan lawer o blith y 400
hynny o Sbaenwyr ifanc di-waith amgyffred newydd
o anabledd bellach. Hyd yn oed os nad ydynt yn
ymwybodol ohono, rhywle yn eu meddyliau pan fyddant
yn meddwl am anabledd dysgu byddant yn meddwl
am Reyes a'i dawnsio prydferth.
