Is Earth unique? Are we the only planet that supports life?
Only in the last 20 years have astronomers been able to
make any meaningful progress on answering these profound
questions. To date astronomers have detected nearly 600
“exoplanets” orbiting other stars, many in multiple planet solar
systems similar to our own. In this model class, Professor
Lawrence will review the telescopes and astronomical
techniques used to find these planets, and the future research
that will allow us to determine if any of these planets are
habitable and possibly even inhabited.
