Short Course in
Foundation Stitches
These courses aim to develop technical skills
and understanding relating to a range of hand
embroidery techniques, to increase awareness
of the diversity of embroidery, and to explore a
variety of design and image making techniques.
You will develop solid skills and knowledge
relating to historical and contemporary
applications of technical hand embroidery, and
use these as a means for creative expression of
ideas through a series of individual projects
Hand embroidery is a time honoured craft
and you must be prepared to spend time on
independent practice.
Modules
Upon completion of Foundation Stitches,
you will be well prepared to study a range
of embroidery disciplines and techniques
including:

Thread painting

Crewel work
>>
Dimensional embroidery
>>
Goldwork
>>
Whitework appliqué and quilting
>>
Ribbon and embellishment
>>
Bead and tambour embroidery
Foundation Stitches
This course is taught over seven, weekly
three hour sessions, providing an intensive
and comprehensive introduction to hand
embroidery. You will learn basic skills, a wide
variety of embroidery stitches and good
working practises to help you further discover
the breadth of hand embroidery.
There are briefs to complete for each session
as well as work samples and experimentation
to help you develop and demonstrate skills
and understanding. At the end of the course,
you will have a portfolio of reference material
demonstrating:

knowledge and understanding of
equipment, preparation and materials
>>
knowledge and understanding of the
primary families of stitches
>>
five work samplers of surface embroidery
stitches
>>
one personal sampler based on your own
design and relevant to your area of interest
The work of each completed session will
be evaluated to ensure full understanding
of the skills learned. Throughout the course
you will be expected to show that you have
experimented with a range of stitches, threads
and fabrics.

These courses can be taken independently and
in any order. Each discipline is broken into levels
of difficulty, each module consisting of four,
three hour sessions are held fortnightly to allow
time for independent practise and development
between sessions. Each module is designed
to guide you through the steps of technical skill,
context and creative exploration.
