This will be a four-man scramble (Captain’s Choice) format - so put together your teams and get ready. We will start with breakfast at 8 AM, have an open range at 8:40 AM, followed by a shotgun start at 9:15 AM. Lunch, great prizes, specific hole contests, and some MSU athletes to help you score - will also be included. Cost will be $39.00/player - sign-up and money is due by July 13th. Pick up a Flyer with more information and sign-up at the Information Area - any questions contact Tim Fair (517) 202-9605 / [email protected] From time to time people from our congregation donate flower arrangements to the church following the funeral of a loved one. We always appreciate the thought and gesture. We simply want people to be aware that most of the time those arrangements will not be placed at the front of the auditorium. A lot of work and thought goes into coordinating the platform area, and often donated flower arrangements do not fit with what has been planned. Again, we always accept donated flowers, but it is very likely that they will be placed somewhere other than the front of the auditorium. Our goal is to seek appropriate places where arrangements fit with the existing surroundings. Senior Saints June 10th, twenty-two Happy Senior Saints gathered for a delicious potluck luncheon followed by “carnival games” and prizes. FUN!! Our next gathering will be Tuesday, July 8th, join us at 12:00 noon, at St. Johns City Park, St. Johns, for a picnic. Bring your own meat to grill along with a salad or dessert, table service and a beverage. Yard games to follow. If you have a grill we could use, please call John Speck. Hope to see you there! Tuesday, August 12th, we will meet at Uncle John’s Cider Mill. Be sure to sign up at the Information Area. Beginning Sunday, July 13th, all adult Sunday school classes (unless your group is still meeting for the summer) will meet in the Auditorium for Sunday School. We will continue viewing DVD’s from the Worldview Weekend by various speakers on different current topics from a Biblical viewpoint. They will continue until the adult small groups and classes start back up in September. Dear Church Family, Thank you to all who prayed, supplied gifts and helped in Vacation Bible School (VBS). It was a great week of seeing the Lord work in the lives of K-6th graders. About 75 kids enrolled with one profession of faith in Christ. We learned about Moses and Jesus. God parted the Red Sea and we saw the miracle of the holding back of the water in the basement so we could have VBS on Thursday. (Pastor Chad has pictures) The Lord is so good. Many kids were not from our church and quite a few were unchurched. Please continue to pray for the boys and girls as they remember what they learned. Thank you again. Blessings to you, Laurie Ordway MISSIONS UPDATE: BUSY HANDS FOR MISSIONS On June 5th there were 5 ladies present. We filled 14 ditty bags for Youth Haven Ranch, retied and labeled the quilt from LMF (circa 1977-78) and started assembling a quilt that was sent home to be completed. We are taking July & August off so our next meeting will be Sept 2nd---9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Watch the September Communiqué for more details. If you would like to do some sewing this summer, please contact me at 640-2704. Have a good summer---In His service, Dee Chapman THANK YOU’S From Sue (and Steve) Mayo: Today we received the packet you posted. Thanks so much for sending the church history to us. There were so many things in it that we didn’t know about. Praise the Lord for the way He has grown the church for His glory! We would love to have a personal tour through the entire facility some time when we are back if possible. Because of our limited time with you all on furloughs, we have never even seen the Beacon of Hope facilities. Your tour guide notes were impressive! :) First Baptist of St. Johns holds a very special place in our hearts with many wonderful memories of special people and spiritual growth moments. Thanks again for thinking of us. We look forward to listening to the dedication service CD soon From Carl Kresge: Thank you also for the wrench set. That was just what I needed! Please pass along my appreciation to the missions committee. They will get lots of use, not for SEND, but in my uDog game-making hobby in my basement! From Lori Kresge: Lori Kresge was here for a funeral and when asked if there was something she needed she replied “yes, I could use a set of queen size sheets”. A color matching her bedroom was located in the mission’s storage area along with a couple small candles and a body cream. MISSIONARY OF THE MONTH Joel & Ellen Hopkins (En Route to East Germany) Home address: 7046 N. Lowell Rd., St. Johns, MI 48879 E-mail: [email protected] Phone: 630.470.5315 Birthdays: Joel: 11/10/83; Ellen: 8/2/82; Eliana: 4/3/11; Johanna: 6/7/13 Married: 12/29/06 Mission Agency: Josiah Venture - Website: www.josiahventure.com WHERE GOD IS LEADING: God has been leading Joel and Ellen towards the mission field for a long time and they are currently in the process of raising financial support. They are going to Leipzig, Germany as soon as they raise 100% of their support. During the first two years, their focus will be to study the language and culture, participate in the existing youth ministry of a Baptist-affiliated church, the EFG Jacobstrasse, and look for outreach opportunities at the local high schools and Leipzig’s university. They are blessed to work with an experienced organization like Josiah Venture, who has ministered in Central and Eastern Europe for 20 years. Josiah Venture’s vision is to be a movement of God among the youth of Central and Eastern Europe that finds its home in the local church and transforms society. Josiah Venture’s mission is to equip young leaders in Central and Eastern Europe to fulfill Christ’s commission through the local church. HOW IT ALL BEGAN: Joel was raised in a Christian home, accepted Christ at an early age but did not walk with Him for many of his teen years. During his sophomore year of high school, his family moved to St. Johns and attended First Baptist Church. Feeling welcomed by Pastor Chad and the students in the youth group, he became involved at church and soon recommitted his life to following Christ. He felt a calling into full-time ministry even then. Ellen was raised in an unbelieving home in Germany. During her foreign exchange year in the Chicago suburbs, she was presented with the gospel for the first time and prayed to receive Christ into her heart. God called Ellen into full-time ministry soon after and led her to apply to Moody Bible Institute, where Joel and Ellen met. HOW GOD LED THEM TO JOSIAH VENTURE AND LEIPZIG, GERMANY: Ellen had always considered returning to her home country. Joel, who had considered missions even before meeting Ellen, felt drawn to Germany when learning about Martin Luther’s reformation many centuries ago as well as the desperate need for missionaries in formerly communist Eastern Germany. Meanwhile, they continued to be involved in youth ministry state-side. God impressed on Joel’s heart to continue working with this age group as it is in need of consistent care and devotion. They have seen God bless their work with youth over the years. Upon meeting Josiah Venture, they fell in love with their values, strategies, and focus and could not believe how much their ministry aligns with what God had already laid on their hearts. As they are part of the first Josiah Venture team in Eastern Germany, they sought God’s will for a starting city and German home church and God led them to their future German home church in Leipzig during a vision trip in 2010. God also began growing their team. Currently, Joel and Ellen are involved in our Missionary Candidacy Development program in hope that we become their sending church. Food for Thought…A Challenge to be Thinking Christians 5 Ways to Bless Your Workplace By Nick Abraham Nick Abraham holds an MDiv from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. He lives in Navarre, Ohio, with his wife and daughter. Before working at my present job, I was a cook for five years at an Italian restaurant. If you have worked in the restaurant industry, you know that it can draw an interesting and diverse crowd of employees. During that time, I became a Christian. I never thought that I would be in a more challenging work atmosphere to share and live out my faith. While my current work atmosphere is really nothing like the restaurant (I work at Fortune 500 company), I have found an entirely new set of challenges in living out my faith at work. The truth is, there are always challenges to carrying the gospel message in a fallen world, regardless of the context. The corporate world presents a unique veneer of professionalism, ethics, and propriety. But in reality, the guts of the day-to-day in a corporate job can be quite challenging. There are myriad moral conundrums that come up in an office. We are faced with temptations to gossip and engage in malicious chatter when others aren’t around. Many are faced with struggles with the opposite sex. The challenge for Christians is to represent the gospel well at any job. So how do we represent Jesus well in the workplace? Here are a five ways to grace your workplace. 1. Be bold but smart. Consider Paul’s boldness before Felix in Acts 24 or Jesus’ words on being brought before governors and kings in Matthew 10. Just because we are at work, we are never exempt from the call on our lives to make much of him. However, we must be smart and keep in mind passages like (1 Peter 2:13): “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution.” At work, we are subject to our bosses and to the leader or leaders of the company. So be bold, but keep in mind where you are. 2. Take risks. I realize this point somewhat contradicts the last one, but the Christian life rests in that tension between risk and prudence. Take steps in work friendships to bring up Jesus. I am a relational evangelist, meaning I like to establish some type of friendship and then bring up Jesus. I am rarely the “can I tell you about Jesus?” guy. My temptation is to never actually bring up Jesus, or to do so in softened ways. Risk a friendship, risk a promotion, risk not “fitting in,” or maybe even risk your job if God would call you to that sacrifice. Of course, we don’t want to be reckless just for the sake of being reckless. 3. Pray for your enemies. Make it a practice to pray for the people who don’t seem to like you, who you don’t really get along with, or who just always seem to have something snarky to say to or about you. This is incredibly hard, which is why you need to rely on the Spirit. You will also discover God ministering to you even as you pray. Pray for them, for their families, and for their kids. Most importantly, pray for their relationship with Jesus. (Next Page) Food for Thought…A Challenge to be Thinking Christians (Cont.) 4. Use your gift(s). I am a teacher/pastor type. I usually go into a teaching or pastoral mode at some point during my faith encounters with coworkers. The church is still the church both gathered and scattered. While at work we continue to be part of the church scattered, and in the church we are called to use our gifts to build up the body. Pray about and find a way to use your gift(s). Start a Bible study; start a prayer group; take people’s prayer requests and pray for them; give of your time, talents, or treasures to those in need. Do whatever it takes to be a reconciling minister of the gospel (2 Cor. 5:18-20). 5. Work hard. Be on time, care about your job, follow the rules, get your work done, and help others. Of course, nonbelievers can be good employees, too. What makes us different is really captured in the household codes from many of the epistles. “Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust” (1 Pet. 2:18). We should be that “good” employee no matter whom we work for, what the conditions are, and/or whether we like the job. In sharing these sufferings of Christ, light they may be, we can make much of Christ by working hard with integrity. Never let laziness or grumbling be your calling card. May God bless us as we seek to serve and make much of Christ in all areas of our lives! “To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.” (Col. 1:27-29). Copyright © 2014 The Gospel Coalition, Inc. All rights reserved.
