KATY LIPSON Katy Lipson is a young Musical Director, Composer, Vo‐
calist and Producer of theatre. She has a vast knowledge
of repertoire through the Musical Theatre and Popular
Music culture and currently is heavily involved in the de‐
velopment and production of new musical theatre in the
United Kingdom. She runs two theatre companies which
she is also the Resident Musical Director for.
Her style of teaching is through a combination of tai‐
lored techniques for the student’s specific instrument in
addition to text and musical understanding. She is a very
strong accompanist and enjoy working on performance
and acting through song. When focusing on material she
encourages her students to first of all understand the
dramatic through‐line of their song, the musical style
needed, the musical phrasing and dynamics indicated
and then she explores the student’s voice and ways to
develop different colours accordingly to support the de‐
mands of the text.

Specialisms: Piano: Classical, Jazz, Songwriting
Singing: Classical, Musical Theatre, Folk, Singer‐songwriter,
Carollyn Eden soprano/singer‐songwriter was born in Ashton‐
under‐Lyne and grew up in Leeds where from a very early age
music became one of greatest joys. She took every opportunity
to sing and play music, learning the flute and the piano and be‐
coming a cantor at Leeds Cathedral. At eighteen she won
the Harrogate Young Musician of the Festival as a pianist and
that year came to London to study piano at the Guildhall School
of Music. While there she enjoyed performing works by contem‐
porary composers and was particularly drawn to working with singers. On leaving the
Guildhall she set out on the journey of becoming a singer herself, studying with many high‐
ly esteemed teachers such as Mary Hammond, Paula Anglin, Emma Kirkby and Sally Bur‐
gess and studying acting at Richmond Drama School and with the inspired coach Delia Lin‐
don. She immersed herself in all styles of music including classical, jazz, folk, Celtic rock
and musical theatre. This led her to songwriting and performing as Astraea, through which
she met her husband to be, composer Mark Glentworth with whom she has collaborated
on songs and as a librettist on two operas. As a singer Carollyn has performed in a diverse
cross section of music from early music groups to experimental projects, including recent
performances at the Brighton Festival and the ICA with composer Alex Nikiporenko and
artist Matthew Stone. Carollyn is a founder member of Storm Deva, a band crossing the
boundaries of classical and folk music. The band’s website is http//:www.stormdeva.com
Teaching methods Teaching has been an integral part of Carollyn’s life since completing her own musical stud‐
ies. She has taught students of all levels from beginners to those already in the profession
and her aim is to guide each individual towards realising their true potential whether they
are aiming towards a career or are just learning for their own fulfillment and pleasure. She
believes learning should be a fun and creative process and does not have a set method of
working , but instead tailor makes lessons to suit each individual student. Although she
encourages students to have a good technical grounding in music, she is also open to
teaching in a freer way including learning music by ear.
As well as having taught at the BRIT School for many years, Carollyn also currently teaches
at J.A.S.S.P.A ‐ James Allen Girls School‐ Dulwich as well as teaching from home.
