1206 The most ancient inhabitants of Cēsis, Wends, and the fact of
their baptizing were mentioned in Livonian chronicle of Henry
for the first time. The medieval German name of the city,
Wenden, was derived from the name of Wends.
1213–1214 The construction of the stone wall castle took place under
the guidance of Livonian Brothers of the Sword. It became a
strategically important military object and a base for further
conquests, as well as a residence of the Brothers of the Sword
and later of the masters of Livonian Order.
1279 The red-white-red flag, which was used by Cēsis home guard,
helping the inhabitants of Riga to fight Zemgalians, was first
mentioned in Livonian Rhyme chronicle. The choice of the
colours for the flag of Latvian was built upon the information
in the chronicle.
1383 The first known image of the coat of arms of Cēsis, which was
used in the seal to confirm a document. The main parts of the
image, namely a knight with a sword and an armour standing
on a stone wall of the city, have been preserved until nowadays.
1577 The Russian-Tatar army under the leadership of Ivan the
Terrible destroys Cēsis stone castle, shelling it for ‘five days
and nights’. Around 300 people seek shelter in the castle, later
blowing themselves up, because of the fear to be taken as
prisoners.
