AUGUST 2015
FROM THE DESK OF SUPERINTENDENT
JOHN DENNEY...
THANK YOU!!! I would like to begin this
newsletter by thanking our wonderful community for your overwhelming support of
our recent millage renewals. Please know
how much your support is appreciated. On
behalf of all of us associated with the district, thank you!
As we prepare to begin the 2015-2016 school
year, I’d like to reflect on a great 2014-2015
year and discuss the future. This past year
saw our students excel in so many areas
from academics to athletics. Our facilities
received more updates, the biggest one being
the addition of the new weight room at the
high school. This summer we put a new entryway and roof on the elementary building.
Following are more details regarding the
areas of academics, athletics and facilities.
ACADEMICS: We are still waiting for the
release of our spring test result; this was the
first year of the M-STEP test, which replaced the MEAP. It appears that it may
still be another month or so until we see all
of the scores. However, we are very confident
that our results will reflect the great effort
that has gone into adjusting our curriculum
to meet the ever-changing demands. Our
high school has received its preliminary ACT
results, and the scores will likely put us at
the top or near the top in the county in every
score category. Again, we will need to wait to
know for sure. Once we receive our detailed
scores from all of the tests, we will begin the
process of evaluating our curriculum and
instruction in order to deliver the best education possible to our students.
ATHLETICS: Last year was a great year
for Comet athletics! Our teams collected
multiple conference, district, and regional
championships to go along with a final four
appearance in boys’ basketball, an individual state champion in girls’ bowling, and a
state championship in boys’ bowling. We also
had our first track relay team win the state
championship in the 3200m relay. At the
local level, our teams earned the Burdette
Andrews All-Sports Award as the winningest all-around program in the Cascades
Conference. Several Comet teams and players were also recognized for their academic
excellence, earning Academic All-State hon-
ors in addition to
their record-setting
achievements.
Our
Comets
performed
very well in the classroom as well as in
their
competitions.
We are very proud of
all that they accomplished!
FACILITIES: When the Sinking Fund was
renewed a few years ago, the elementary
roof was identified as a top priority for replacement during the life of the millage.
During the past couple of hard winters, it
also became apparent that the main entry
for the elementary needed to be addressed.
Shortly after school let out in June, the work
began to construct a brand new enclosed
entryway and to place a new roof on the entire building. Additional drainage was also
installed around the circle drive of the elementary building in order to help eliminate
some of the icing issues we have had. This
entire project was paid for out of our sinking
fund. Again, thank you for your continued
support of this fund that allows us to continue to meet the physical needs of our facilities
Looking forward, we will not likely have
more projects as big as the weight room and
roof, but there will still be very important
items to address. Some projects will likely
include additional electrical/mechanical upgrades in order to improve efficiency, sidewalk replacement, parking lot repairs, and
other items that will present themselves in
the future. Now that we know the sinking
fund will continue to be there, we will prioritize and create a plan on how best to move
forward. We will continue to focus on maintaining the phenomenal facilities that we
have and providing the best environment for
our students.
Please feel free to contact me if you have
any questions or concerns about our district.
Thank you again for your continued support!
John

Healthy Changes in Our School Cafeterias
This fall, Hanover-Horton School District cafeterias are meeting tough new federal nutrition standards
for school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a great time to encourage your kids to choose school lunch!
School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict
limits on saturated fat and portion size. Additional standards our school lunches were required to meet::







Age-appropriate calorie limits for breakfast and lunch
Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
0 grams trans fat
More whole grains
Reduced sodium levels
A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of fruit or vegetable)
We’re always working to offer Hanover-Horton students healthier and tastier choices. We are focusing
on serving healthy homemade entrees, locally grown foods, and increased offerings of whole grains.
School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families too! Below are the meal prices.
SendMoneyToSchool.com is a great tool to monitor your student’s meal account activity, deposit funds
online, and view the account balance. If you would like to receive email alerts when your student’s account falls below the minimum balance, contact the Food Service Office, 517.990.3603, to have this service set up.

TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURES:
If you have any questions regarding the transportation schedules, please call Mr. Mike Connor at 563-0106.
Transportation staff members will be present at the elementary ABC Night on August 31st. This list of bus routes
is intended to give you a general idea of when a bus will arrive. Students should be at their stop 15 minutes
early for the first two weeks of school. Our goal is to transport our students in the safest, most efficient manner possible. We appreciate the help we receive from parents in keeping our children safe.
REMINDER:
Students are only permitted to ride the bus they are assigned to.
