History of Transitional
Kindergarten in EUSD
Began in 2010-2011 school year
Originally called Developmental Kindergarten
•
Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010: Senate Bill (SB) 1381 (Chapter 705,
Statutes of 2010) amended California Education Code (EC) (Section 46300,
48000, and 48010) to change the required birthday for admission to
kindergarten and first grade and established a Transitional Kindergarten (TK)
program.

Transitional Kindergarten
• Students whose birthday falls between September 2nd December 2nd
• Provide a strong foundation of Kindergarten readiness
• A modified curriculum that is age and developmentally
appropriate
• Focus on where children come from and where they are
going
• Students benefit from highly trained EUSD
teachers using aligned curriculum and
instructional strategies
Registration
TK Packets are available beginning first week in
February
– Intradistrict Transfers:
• Priority given to resident students
• Pick up packet at home school
• Intradistrict process must be completed
• Notified if space is available in April & June
– Interdistrict Transfers:
• Priority given to resident students
• Pick up packet at school of interest
• Interdistrict transfer process must be completed
• Notified if space is available in April & June

Counting and writing numbers
Science/Social Science: Transportation, Tree Homes, Fabric
Social Skills: using words, getting along with others, walking
in a line, “carpet time”
Assessments & Reporting
• May (TK/K Assessments)
– Teachers will assess students for 15
minutes
– Information allows teachers to prepare
before school year begins
• August, November, February, June
– Students will be assessed by their teacher to measure
growth and identify areas of need
• Report Card / Parent Teacher Conferences

• Class size target is 21 students
• The goal is to have one TK on each campus-based
on enrollment
