MEGA SLIME
What You Need:
* 2 ounces glue, like Elmer’s glue or white glue
* 1/4 cup of water
* acrylic or poster paint in any color
* 1/4 cup warm water
* 1/4 tsp borax powder (found in the detergent section at the grocery store)
* flat stirring stick, like popsicle sticks from craft stores
What You Do:
1. Measure glue and water and mix together in a medium sized bowl. When the glue is mixed in,
add some paint into it. The more paint you add in, the darker the slime will be. Stir to mix well.
2.In a smaller measuring cup or bowl, mix in the borax with 1/4 cup of warm water. Stir to mix
as much as possible. Not all of the borax will dissolve. That means that the liquid has become
saturated and the rest will sink to the bottom.
3. Pour the borax mixture into the glue mixture. If you have undissolved borax, try not to
pour that in. With the popsicle stick in hand, get ready to quickly stir and mix the ingredients.
The slime will form almost instantly in this step so make sure you stir immediately. The slime
will be rubbery, soft and slippery.
4. Take your mixture to the sink and take it out of the cup. Use your hands to squeeze as much
liquid out of it as possible. The more liquid you squeeze out the firmer and bouncier it will get.
5. Once all the mixture is squeezed out, store in a plastic zip loc bag or tub.
What’s Going on?
This POLYMER is unique because it has qualities of both a solid and a liquid. It can take the shape of its
containers like a liquid does, yet you can hold it in your hand and pick it up like a solid. As you might know,
solid molecules are tight together, liquid molecules spread out and break apart (drops) POLYMER molecules
CHAIN themselves together (they can stretch and bend like chains) and that makes them special. Jell-O,
rubber bands, plastic soda bottles, sneaker soles, even gum are all forms of polymer
INVISIBLE INK
What You Need:
* Half a lemon
* Small bowl
* Cotton Swab
* Paper
* Lamp with an incandescent (heat-producing) light bulb
What You Do:
1. Squeeze the lemon juice into the bowl.
2. Add enough water to the lemon juice so that it's nearly colorless.
3. Dip the cotton swab into the solution and write on the paper.
4. Allow the paper to dry, and the hold it a few inches from the lamp and turn on
the light. (Don't hold it too close to the bulb.) In a few seconds your writing will
appear on the paper!
What’s Going on?
Lemon juice contains citric acid. Heat encourages the acid to oxidize,
which is a chemical reaction between oxygen in the air and a substance. (Oxidation is
what happens when you cut an apple and leave it sitting out: it turns brown
because the citric acid in the apple oxidizes.) So when the lemon juice ink is heated
by the lamp, the lemon juice turns brown.
The writing appears!
MAKE YOUR MEGAMIND POSTER!
1. Using scissors cut off white borders on all pieces.
2. Lay pieces out as shown to create poster image.
Turn pieces over and tape backs together at seams.
