What components of fitness does each of the 6 NAPFA test items
NAPFA
What components of fitness does
each of the 6 NAPFA test items
measure?
Which is health related?
Which is performance related?
Tests (examples)

2.4km run test / 1.5 mile Test
Coopers Test (12min run)
Rockport Fitness Walking Test (1.5km walk)
Harvard Step Test
VO2max Test
Oxygen Consumption
• VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen an
individual can utilize during intense or maximal exercise.
(It is measured as "milliliters of oxygen used per kilogram of
body weight per min” or “ml O2/kg-min” )
VO2 max is one factor that can determine an athlete's
capacity to perform sustained exercise and is linked to
aerobic endurance
Factors affecting VO2max
The physical limitations that restrict the rate at
which energy can be released aerobically are
dependent upon:
a. the ability of cardiovascular and pulmonary
systems to transport the oxygen to the muscular
tissue system
b. the chemical ability of the muscular cellular
tissue system to use oxygen in breaking down
fuels
VO2max
Accurate measurement of VO2max generally
requires the collection and analysis of
inhaled and exhaled gases during exercise to
exhaustion.
This is usually done in a lab, and always
under the supervision of professionals.
Unfortunately, this kind of testing is not
widely available to the general public.
Why?
Multi-stage shuttle run or Beep Test
Warm-up – jog and stretch
Shuttle run consists of 20 metre section marked with marker cones
Test commences when CD is played.
The athlete must place one foot on or beyond the 20m marker at the end of
each shuttle.
If athlete arrives at the end of a shuttle before the beep, the athlete must wait
for the beep and then resume running
If the athlete fails to reach the end of the shuttle before the beep they attempt
to regain the required pace.
2 consecutive failures marks the end of the test
The assistant records the level and number of shuttles completed at that level
by the athlete
TODAY 9 Jan 2013
They have changed from Level 13.1 beep test to 10:15 2.4km run.
What is the estimated VO2 max for a Level 13.1 beep test?
57 ml / kg / min
What is the estimated VO2 max for a 10:15 2.4km run?
50 ml /kg / min
No wonder the players are happy with 2.4km test!
It's not the test! It's the easier standard!
To reach level 13.1, the athletes have to run to run 9min for
2.4km. If they were to change to 2.4km test, they must set passing
time of 9 min...
What’s the difference? Pros and Cons?
• Lab tests vs Field tests
• Beep test vs 2.4km test / Coopers test
• Run tests vs Walk tests
