Opera has been one of the most popular
of the performing arts for the past 400 years.
Geniuses like Monteverdi, Mozart, Verdi,
Wagner, and Puccini produced some of the
all time masterpieces in this genre. This course
will help you explore the extraordinary world of
opera from the first known opera by Monteverdi
to contemporary operas like Adam’s Nixon in
China. Along the way we will also discover the
various voice types and vocal styles that opera
demands and meet the most well loved opera
characters. This course will be of help to both
lovers of opera and also budding opera singer
who would like a better understanding to the
genre.
You’ve probably heard of musicals like
‘Wicked’ and ‘Les Miserables’ and composers
like Lloyd Webber and Sondheim, but how
much history of musical theatre do you really
know? Did you know that ‘The Black Cross’
written in 1866 is considered to be the first ever
musical and what is the difference between
Music-hall and Vaudeville? Do you know the
difference between a book, a sung-through
and a concept musical or the difference
between legit and CCM (contemporary
commercial music)?

This class will explore the different styles of
MT which have developed over the years and
will examine the singing, acting and dance
techniques necessary to tackle the demands
of those musicals. It will look at examples of
shows from the earliest right through to the
most current and will compare and contrast
material and will give you the opportunity to
expand your repertoire and perhaps find that
perfect audition song!

The term “pop music” was first coined
around the middle of the 1920’s, it meant a
piece of music had “popular” appeal. Music
recorded in the 20’s can be seen as being the
start of the modern day pop music industry,
which includes rhythm and blues music,
as well as, country, folk, jazz and others. This
course gives music students an overview of all
the different styles that the term popular music
encompasses.
