to Our Friends and Supporters
District 214 Community Education Foundation Chair
Glenn Scoggins, right, stands next to CE Foundation
Executive Director Mike Field after receiving his plaque
of appreciation recently.
If one would have taken a snapshot of what 2013-14 was like for the Foundation, it would clearly show a
vibrant picture capturing the meaningful growth of our programs and the successes of our three fundraisers.
It would also capture the hard work of our board of trustees and staff to ensure our goals are met to stay true
to our mission of providing quality programs and services to the people in our communities.
C
ommunity education is an educational
philosophy that extends learning beyond the
restrictions of age and the traditional school day.
This philosophy affords local agencies, businesses,
and other organizations opportunities to become
active partners in addressing community issues.
The mission of the Foundation is to secure and
allocate financial and other community resources
that support lifelong learning opportunities
provided by District 214 Community Education.
There were many challenges this past fiscal year as we continue to experience an economy that was trying to
regain its footing. With a steadfast resolve, the entire District 214 Community Education Foundation Board
and staff pressed on. We were undaunted in keeping our promise to help as many people as we could. The
number tells our story. Thousands of lives in our communities were impacted by the work that we did this
year.
Our three fundraisers - golf outing in late spring, online auction in the fall, and HoopsMania in late winter
- were successful and helped us tremendously with our mission. In addition, our Annual Appeal campaign
around the holiday season was a success. We are very grateful for the outpouring of support from our
donors, friends, supporters and the entire District 214 community.
The success stories that come back to us are wonderful reminders of what we can do together. We are very
proud of the work that we do but we are not done. With your unwavering support, we can touch more
lives in the future and it is because of this that we are very excited to share with you that the Foundation
is expanding to the new District 214 Education Foundation. The new foundation’s mission is to support
innovation and lifelong learning throughout all of High School District 214. We are excited about this
change and the new opportunities it will provide.
On behalf of the District 214 Community Education Foundation Board and staff, thank you very much for
your benevolence and generosity.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Field
Executive Director, CE Foundation

Adult Education & Family Literacy
The Read to Learn Adult Literacy/Volunteer program was again funded by the Secretary of State Literacy
Office for the 29th consecutive year. The SOS Literacy Office also funded two FY14 Penny Severns Family
Literacy grants, the first in partnership with the Arlington Heights Memorial Library and The Catherine M.
Lee Women’s & Children’s Center, and the second in partnership with District No. 26 Euclid School and
the Mount Prospect Public Library. The Illinois State Board of Education - Early Childhood Block - funded
the Prevention Initiative Birth-3 grant. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights funded the
Immigrant Family Resource Program, the SNAP program, and the New Americans Initiative for citizenship
education. The Illinois Community College Board funded the ESL and ABE/GED programs.
The Read to Learn Adult Literacy/Volunteer program held tutor training sessions in September 2013 and
January 2014. A total of 366 volunteer tutors were trained in FY14 who, in turn, tutored 605 adult
beginning readers. Plans began to increase the number of mandatory pre-service tutor training hours to
16.5 hours, up from the minimum of 12 hours mandated by the Secretary of State Literacy Office.
The GED® 2002 test closed out on December 31, 2013. Taking a paper and pencil GED test is no longer
an option. Computer-based testing, unveiled by the GED Testing Service on January 1, 2014, got off to an
excellent start in Community Education. The new 2014 GED® test is no longer an endpoint for adults,
but a springboard for more education, training, and better-paying jobs. The computer-based test allows for
more consistent delivery, scoring, reporting, and security. It will continue to provide adults the opportunity
to earn a high school credential, plus it measures career- and college-readiness skills that are the focus of
today’s curriculum and tomorrow’s success.
4
Read to Learn also initiated new technology-based marketing strategies that utilize Facebook and Twitter,
email campaigns via MailChimp, a QR Code, an easy-to-remember program email address: Readtolearn@
d214.org, a new direct link to the website: http://ce.d214.org/readtolearn, promotional materials placed in
the “virtual backpacks” and e-flyers of area sender school websites, and regular review of search engine
optimization tactics.
Over the course of the year, 1,107 adult learners attended classes in English as a Second Language and
adult basic education.

Cultural & Performing Arts
Keeping the Arts Alive
• We welcomed Denny Diamond and the Family
Jewels to a packed theater on November 24,
performing a unique tribute to Neil Diamond,
one of America’s favorite singer/songwriters.
The tribute also included paying homage to
other legendary artists like Johnny Cash, Ricky
Nelson, Glen Campbell, Elvis, Buddy Holly and
others.
• Stamp collecting is alive and well in Community
Education! For three days, collectors, vendors,
buyers and the public converged at Forest View
for the 57th annual COMPEX stamp show on
May 23-25. The event is free to the public.
King’s Players began the year with four shows
in July 2013 of Kiss Me Kate, which played to more
than 1,200 audience members. Main Street Opera
followed in September with two shows of Puccini
One-Acts. Our musical offering was capped with
ArtReach Educational Theatre and Spotlite Theatrix
presenting six performances of Once Upon a
Mattress in late April and early May.
• The 2013-14 season concluded with the twoday Japan Fest on June 6 and 7. For the first time,
this year’s festival presented the very popular
and well-received J-Pop Concert featuring
Ayane, the Japanese anime/game singer and
Daichi, the human beatbox sensation known
worldwide. Considered the largest Japanese
showcase in the Midwest, the festival expanded
to include the appearance of Akinori Ogata, the
only Japanese NASCAR driver; Master Craftsman
Tetsuo Matsuda and his famous violins; and
a business pavilion that attracted “famous”
Japanese companies like All Nippon Airways
Co. Ltd., Japan Airlines, Nippon Express and
Noritake Co., Inc., just to name a few.
• The
Longtime partner The Falconaires, under the
direction of Steve Cooper, presented When Music
Was Music: Music & Memories of the ‘50s in
October.
•
• Our World Stage Series showcased the music
of France in November through the special stage
presentation of La Vie en Rose: The Music of Edith
Piaf, starring Martha Cares with Robert Swan and
featuring Don Stille in accordion. The special
engagement was the first of its kind for audiences
in the Northwest suburbs. The World Stage Series is
partially supported by the Illinois Arts Council.
• Our partnership with the Northwest Suburban
Community Concert Association, on its 66th
season, featured five concerts: The Four Aces,
Daniel Narducci, St. Luke’s Bottle Band, West End
Jazz Band and Close to You. The Arlington Heights
Community Concert Band provided four concerts
that were offered to the community for free.
Northwest Symphony Orchestra presented its 62nd
concert season at Forest View, its new home, with
four concerts: Introductions, Reflections, Drama
and Delight.
• Another first for us this year is our partnership
with The Arlingtones in April. Proud members of
the Barbershop Harmony Society, it brought its
special presentation of the award-winning Music
of Broadway to the Forest View stage.

Intergenerational & Older Adults
Foundation News
Why We Do It
The tradition of offering meaningful
programs and services is rich and thriving in
Community Education. Our programs such as
the annual Senior Celebration Day, Gold Card Club
membership, Intergenerational Dinner Dance, Acts
of Kindness and Walking Club speak highly to CE’s
committment of making quality programs available
to our older adults in the community.
For people like Lillian of Arlington Heights, having
student volunteers come to her house and help her
with washing her windows and changing her light
bulbs and batteries in her smoke alarms is a source
of joy and gratitude. Through the A-OK program,
Community Education is able to help her and many
others improve the quality of their lives.
Every spring, over 20 community organizations come
together and plan the annual Senior Celebration
Day. Attended by at least 2,000 older adults, the
four-hour celebration last May 8 at Arlington Park
Racecourse attracted over 80 exhibitors offering
valuable information on different services to our
older adults. Northwest Community Healthcare
offered several free health screenings as well as
brought in eight therapy dogs to the delight of all
our attendees.
Our Gold Card Club membership is enjoying an alltime high with membership approaching the 10,000
mark. Our members enjoy free admission to our
district high school performances and athletic events,
discounts on selected Community Education Travel
tours, discounts on tuition for selected Continuing
Education classes, and three issues of the Gold Card
Club newsletter.
The annual Intergenerational Dinner Dance party
on April 12 celebrated revelry through its theme,
Unmasking Mardi Gras. The party gave our older
adults a wonderful opportunity to have a memorable
time with our high school students for a few hours.
Behind the Mission
Through the collective effort and unremitting support of
the Foundation’s board of trustees, our three fundraisers
enjoyed unprecedented success.
The 2013 Online Auction in the fall kicked off the
holiday season with a 10-day bidding frenzy on eBay.
We are grateful to our donors and friends for the
152 unique items that were donated which included
autographed memorabilia, family fun packages, food
and wine experiences, golf foursomes, health and
fitness items, tickets to sporting events and theaters,
fine arts pieces, travel destinations, and much more.
We thank everyone for making it a huge success!
The frenzy continued with HoopsMania season in
March! This fundraiser, based on college basketball’s
national tournament, took our Foundation friends and
supporters to another exciting March Madness ride.
Several of our supporters won some of the 49 prizes
including the jackpot cash prize of $1,000. For a $10
donation, you have a 1:29 chance of winning the
jackpot. Congratulations to our lucky winners!
It may have been Friday, the 13th (June 13 that is!) when
we had the 16th Annual Mt. Prospect Golf Classic, but
we could not have asked for a weather that perfect! The
successful outing at Mt. Prospect Golf Club welcomed
112 golfers and close to 60 sponsors. It was presented by
Mount Prospect State Bank and Gary Dorn and featured
the very popular helicopter ball drop as well as a silent
auction and raffle prizes. New this year was the golf ball
cannon which drew quite a buzz on the golf course.
The Foundation board and staff are grateful for
the unwavering support of our donors, friends and
supporters. Collectively we affect change where it
matters and together we continue to improve the quality
of lives in our community.
