Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is Canada’s largest
bank, as measured by assets and market
capitalization, and one of North America’s leading
diversified financial services companies. It serves
more than 14 million personal, business, and public
sector clients in Canada, the United States, and
throughout the world. Operating under the master
brand RBC Financial Group, its investment services
arm is RBC Investments.
Their challenge
RBC Investments wanted to redesign their quarterly
Portfolio Review statement for high-net-worth clients
of their prestigious Private Counsel – their premier
investment counselling service for investors with a
minimum of one-million dollars in assets.
RBC Investments had been receiving complaints from
their clients and investment counsellors about the
statement. It was outdated, lacking visual appeal
and meaningful information.
Part of the reason for the dated design was that the
statements were being composed on old, proprietary
software. When they decided to migrate the statement
generation process to HP Exstream, they seized the
opportunity to redesign their Portfolio Review.
The question, for RBC Investments: Where could
they find a partner who would not only help them
redesign their statement to improve their client
experience, but could also help them leverage their
new technology and work closely with their third party
print-and-mail vendor?
They found their answer in Prinova.

Because RBC Investments engaged us to both
design and build the Portfolio Review, they

counsellors, and clients. After finding out what each
group of stakeholders needed from the Portfolio Review,
we carefully tailored its content to meet their needs. At
the same time, our Integration Services team worked
closely with RBC Investments’ IT personnel to establish
what content they were capable of generating, and the
best way to deliver it.
When our Communications Services team started
testing the new design with investment counsellors and
clients, our Integration Services team began work with
RBC Investments’ operations and IT personnel to migrate
the new Portfolio Review to their print-and-mail vendor.
The results we delivered
Prinova ensured that RBC Investments’ new Portfolio
Review would contain only relevant information.
We replaced the statement’s old, standard newsletter
section with portfolio commentaries from all managers
with in-line commentaries from the portfolio managers
specific to individual clients. This way, we helped RBC
Investments create a personalized solution that truly
reflected the level of care they were providing to
their clients.
We created the architectural data and formatting
solutions for pulling in time-sensitive external content
based on statement data triggers. Not only that, but we
mentored RBC Investments to maintain those structures,
and set them up with an effective workflow to manage
their new, dynamic external messaging.
Because RBC Investments’ print vendor was new to HP
Exstream, we worked closely with them to help integrate
the composition tool, minimizing the required changes
to their existing production environment. For the
changes that were necessary to facilitate their long-term
support of HP Exstream, our seasoned consultants were
on hand to offer expert advice and best-practice tips.
